How does this team compare to 1981 and 2011 sides on 16:49 - Jan 23 with 3507 views | Catullus | Difficult. In 81 we had spent quite a bit so I think what Cooper is doing now is better by comparison BUT maybe Coops started from a better position. I think 81 had a few better individuals but football has changed so much. I think in 2011 we had possibly a stronger attack but today we maybe have a better defence. I'm not really sure. I do think though, we maybe had some better individual players in 2011 but we are a better team now, the sum of the parts exceeding the whole. The 3 teams all had different styles though, 81 442 proper wingers and a CF, 2011 possession based and pass teams to death, today we mix and match, Coops has evolved in short space of time. We can play quick or slow, short passing or long ball, 3 or 4 at the back

Yes the 81 side will always be my favourite so many Welsh players and so much flair as well. But like you say it's a totally different game now players are so much fitter. I did think a couple of months back that the 2011 side had more ability but have changed my opinion now. We have a lot of quality in this side a fantastic defence and some steel in the team not something we have had for a long time have got bullied in years gone by. It's just a massive shame that fans cannot get into watch what is a very good side. I really do think we will be back in the PL next season.

The division as a whole is of lesser quality now than it was then, but in a one off game? Who knows. Think the 2011 team would just about edge it but it's close.

That's the difficulty in comparing eras though. Could the 81 side play with todays rules? Would todays players get up after a Tommy Smith tackle? I think some of the 81 side would find it easier today, Curt would have a field day, so would Leighton James but others wouldn't be on the pitch very long.

This side however appears to be the most organised that we have ever had. Coops is doing a very fine job in that department and we might very well follow in the footsteps of those teams.

Yes, those two sides were a different class, having said that, I think the current teams defensive organisation and discipline is ahead of the other squads, it makes up for the quite mediocre midfield that we've got. I think our midfield playing in the Championship 2010 / 11 was already superior to that of most Premiership teams.

This side is far fitter than 2011’s - the outstanding threat was Sinclair but would this side with its present shape and industry allow him the space? Meanwhile our defence being so mean and our mean streak would bully the hell out of the 2011 side. I also think Lowe and Ayew would have a field day against Taylor Monk Williams and Rangel

Lots of better players than Lowe and Ayew failed against the defenders you talked about though. That back four minus Monk (although he played quite a bit too) came 11th in Premier League, beat the likes of Man City, Liverpool etc I think the standard of the Championship has diminished quite significantly so I’d say the 2011 side edges it personally. That opinion could change by end of season though if the likes of Hourihane and Morris make a big impact!
How does this team compare to 1981 and 2011 sides on 07:45 - Jan 24 with 3066 views | angryjack | What people are saying about our defence ,against that defence then, and saying it's better now,our back 3 now, and whoever steps in for injuries,it's only good ,because we work as a unit of 11 ,when we not got the ball ,it's not just the defence, it starts from the front ,as soon as we lose the ball, that's why we so solid,we keep our shape so well as a unit, so well disciplined it's just not just about our back 3... As for the 2011 team, we played with a lot of possession ,having the ball, a lot more than the opposition ,that's then, why our defence then ,wasn't under so much pressure ,but when we lost it we always looked vulnerable, our 1981 promotion team was good as well ,our system then, was toshack was way before his time as a coach, and the first manager to introduce the sweeper system in this country, our promotion season we would usually play ... D.stewart W.evans. d.lewis N.stevenson N.robinson. Tommy craig jimmy Alan Curtis. Robbie James. Leighton James J.charles. Sometime Leighton Phillips would be there instead of w Evans and a couple other changes butThat was usually our set up as I said toshack was ahead of his time, and introduced the sweeper system later to be called Xmas tree formation 3331 .so it wasn't 442 as someone said earlier..toshack was the man.... I hear what you say but that side adapted well to the PL . We’re talking Pre promotion. I still think the pressure exerted by our midfield and strikers in our press would ultimately end up with the 2011 side coughing up possession (Korey Smith turning the ball over as he does). And whilst we don’t (quite) have the pace of Sinclair we still move the ball a lot more quickly from the back than the 2011 side did. Our new found toughness and dirtiness (for want if a better word) would have roughed that side up and they found serious difficulties facing more physical sides as I remember it. Also our set piece threat (yes , I’m finding it hard to think of a Swansea side with that in its armoury!) and their set piece frailties would have seen us score. It’s a fair argument that the championship back then was a more competitive league but you can only beat what’s in front of you. I wonder how the comparative table after 24 games looked back then though?
