Should every thread about a new player simply be five pages of posts from everybody on here saying "he might be good, let's wait and see and give him a jolly good cheer on his debut."
It would be even more fcking tedious than it already is if that were the case.
Karl Henry has been around long enough, and played against us often enough, for people to form opinions on him. Some people, based on that, think he's sht. There is nothing wrong with that at all.

I've gone a bit numb on signings.
What i will say is ,in the past the signings i didnt really rate did well,Derry etc,but the signings i did rate J S Park, Granero were pants.
I'm just gonna sit on the fence.

They might be right though. I cannot call which way this is going to go at all this season, but it could easily turn out that we're bloody awful again and Redknapp is the wrong man for the job.
I'm writing off nobody's opinion at this stage because frankly I wouldn't be surprised with any of the 24 positions on the league table come May. I suspect we'll be 9th ish but if you told me it turns out we finish first or last I could easily believe it. |  | | |

What's odd about this signing is that it doesn't fit into the typical harry signing. Instead of spending big he's plucked a lower division player from a team where a quality manager (jackett) deems him surplus to requirements. No one would have predicted this a few weeks back.
If Granero, Barton and M'bia are on their way out, then given Derry's age I can see the logic in a midfield enforcer. In our Championship season we lacked this when Derry was out. It would be nice to have signed someone we could have got a bit more excited about, but we are in a for a season of battle and he's someone who will probably stand up and be counted. |  |

Hmmm, when you say "plucked a lower division player" it's not like we've had somebody sitting at Crewe for the last six months and decided to take a punt on some unproven 22 year old who might be the next big thing. Henry has been Championship or Premier league for the last decade.
Agree with what you say about an enforcer, although creativity is going to be our big issue as we stand. I can see us defending well with what we've got

The other two spots are going to be critical, it seems.
Last season got sick to death with our midfield (excluding Derry) throwing in the towel. Its the likes of Dunne, Henry and Derry who need to stop the rot. Harry's doing the right thing, but whether Hoilett/SWP/Mbia/Granero/Taraabt and countless other midfielders have got the right mentality is an entirely different matter.

We have the means and standing to attract a variety of players - excepting experienced Prem performers on the fringes of the England squad, sorry Harry - and it's only a lack of imagination that holds us back. If you really think the club is in such a state that only Karl Henry would consider joining then you're ten times more hysterical than anyone slagging him off here. |
Erm who said "Only Karl Henry?"
Whilst we have a good medium to long term future and are a better prospect than most other clubs outside the elite ones, we are not yet a famous, prestigious or well respected club, we just had a dire season where we never looked like getting anywhere near staying up and we have been frequently panned by the media (and rival fans) for overspending (although the Samba situation proved we were much more shrewd than the hacks thought) and have been earmarked by them as the next Pompey. This is where we are, whether we like it or not, and I certainly don't like it.
That doesn't mean that no quality players will want to come but it does rule out a fair number, hard as that is for us to take, and it can make - has made, indeed - many of those willing to come more expensive. I think this will change in time but there are simply not as many options open to us as there are to some clubs.

I have to admit I'm not doing cartwheels at the prospect of Henry signing, however, as mentioned previously, our so called 'big names' couldn't do it for us last year so let's hope this signing turns out to be the big surprise like Hill and Derry were in our Championship winning season...
Redknapp appears to be targeting british players with a point to prove, which I for one, think is a good move for a Championship campaign. We had over 7 different nationalities in a starting 11 last season - no wonder there was no chemistry or team bonding! |
FYI - In at least 1 game last season we fielded 11 different nationalities - Cesar (BRZ), Bosingwa (PRT), Nelsen (NZL), Hill (GBR), Traore (SEN), Park (SKR), Granero (ESP), Faurlin (ARG), Hoilett (CAN), Remy (FRA), Taarabt (MOR).
Not that nationality matters.
As to Karl Henry, he's got a point to prove after 2 relegations and being ostracised. May work to our advantage - if he's still got it. [Post edited 1 Jan 1970 1:00]
