With us potentially being able to get back into the top 4 with a win against Palace on the weekend, i had a look at Southampton's next few fixtures as they seem to be occupying a false position in 2nd place and MUST have some hard games approaching, it seems they do.

Arsenal (a)
Man Utd (h)
They are currently 8 points ahead of us so id like to make at least 5 points of that up in the next 3 games leaving us within one game striking distance, we have:-
Palace (h)
QPR (h)
West Ham (a)
Its a decent sized ask but we could seriously be going into the new year occupying a Champions League place. What a great season so far. |  |

You have to give them a huge amount of credit for what they've done this season after losing so many players. However, I still have a feeling that they'll finish 7th with Swansea and West Ham fighting for 8th and 9th. |

I don't think anyone would have expected Southampton to maintain second place for very long. There are two teams way ahead of the rest in this league.
Could they stay third? That's not impossible for them from where they are now but I would say its very unlikely. If I were a betting man I'd bet on Arsenal for third.
Fourth? We're now in the realms of possibility. Can they maintain a two point lead over Man U for the last 17 games? Possible but on balance probably not.
I do think they have a serious chance of Europa League football next season through their league position especially if one of the top 4 win the FA Cup. They would then have to finish above either Spurs or Liverpool and with both those teams to play at home. |  |

Southampton fell away last year, much before this point too.
They experienced it last year so the remaining hub of the team knows how to deal with that now. They've already played Arsenal and Man Utd twice too meaning they only have 5 of the big teams in the remaining 17 matches.

No the top 2 are likely a closed shop. We have a decent chance of nicking a CL spot though, failing that top 5 or 6 which will be just fine.
I just found it cringeworthy reading this thread. You strike me as one of those insufferable internet know-it-alls, who will never admit they are wrong and will argue endlessly trying to save face.
You were clearly stating in the original post that Swansea should be replacing us in the top 4. You stated that the gap was 8 points but you expected that to disappear very soon. Not an improbable prediction by any stretch, but the manner you made the prediction was pretty dismissive of Saints.
Where your true colours really showed however was at the first sign of us losing some consectutive games in December you on here crowing over your fellow posters and bragging about your prediction.
Then shock horror, we go on a great run knocking off Everton, Palace, Arsenal and Man Utd and taking a point from Chelsea, taking us back up to third place and 9 points above Swansea. Rather than admit any wrong though you twist your argument and start lambasting your fellow posters claiming that your only prediction was that we wouldn't finish 2nd and that you were 100% correct all along.
