Saints So Near To Premier League Record Win
Sunday, 19th Oct 2014 11:33

Saints fell agonizingly short of achieving the distinction of having the best ever Premier League win of all time after beating Sunderland so comprehensively.

Its been over 30 years since Saints last hit 8 goals in a league match, back in April 1984 to be exact when they smashed Coventry City 8-2 at the Dell, most Saints fans would have imagined that the chances of repeating a score like that were long gone, these routs are reserved for the superstar top five teams not the likes of Saints.

But now Saints sit joint second in the al time lists of Premier League wins, with only Manchester United's 9-0 win back in 1995 above us and how close we came to equalling that, indeed at one point on Saturday I really thought we might just do that, when we hit the 8th in the 86th minute and with Sunderland in total disarray, our chances of getting another in the 7-8 minutes left of the game including injury time looked good, sadly though it was not to be.

United's 9-0 drubbing of the Tractor Boys remains the biggest winning margin, although there are several eight goal margins, Spurs will lay claim for the second best winning scoreline in that they are the only other club to score 9 goals in a match, sadly for them though Wigan managed a single goal to leave United up there on their own, the North London Soccer Chickens will of course claim that 9-1 is better than 8-0 as they scored one more goal.

Premier League's biggest wins

Manchester United 9-0 Ipswich, March 1995
Newcastle United 8-0 Sheffield Wednesday, September 1999
Tottenham Hotspur 9-1 Wigan Athletic, November 2009
Chelsea 8-0 Wigan Athletic, May 2010
Chelsea 8-0 Aston Villa, December 2012
Southampton 8-0 Sunderland, October 2014

two points.
1. some commentators , since about March 2013, have predicted Saints would stuff the opposition because of our fast tempo play. Well we did it yesterday with the fast tempo , good defending, a slice of luck and a broken opposition for the last quarter of the match.

2. Worse than empty seats were the hundreds who decided to leave with as much as 10 mins still remaining. What do they achieve by that ? By staying they had the chance of seeing more goals, savouring every last minute of an historic moment and joining the standing ovation of our team at the final whistle.

It sounds ridiculous now, but I'm quite disappointed we didn't scrape a 9th. Little old Southampton with the record win in the Premership. That've upset the record books.

Don't despair there is still Stoke next week.

If we get one past Stoke without reply I'd be happy. We have found it notoriously hard to break them down in seasons gone by with their negative brand of outmuscle the opposition and play for set-plays.
