Really enjoying this season !! 19:00 - Nov 22 with 8516 viewsTalkingSutty

Its great to be able to relate to the players and the fact some have moved up from Southern based clubs almost wants you to support them even more.

Beechy now working alongside Hilly is also a win, win situation in the long run for the club i reckon (If you know what i mean).

Even if we come up short at the end of the season it will be a great ride. We now have some cracking footballers at the club and should be proud of them.

Over 9000 at Southend yesterday on their £5 day.

There's no Man City or Man Utd types near Southend to compete. Also, their local economy isn't on a low and there isn't the same concentration of Asians - factors mentioned by isitme.

I really think the relatively recent emergence of City with the big money has knocked about 200 off our gate, some would argue more. It means relatively nothing to them but a lot to us. I know it's been mentioned a million times but if we each try a little harder to bring another person then each small addition will sum up to a "lot".

Our team deserve better support in terms of numbers.

Doubt it.

If we have 1500 paying customers (ignoring season ticket holders) at an average of £15 per person, that gives us £22500

If Southend have 6000 paying customers (ignoring a generous 3000 season ticket holders...might be less) x £5 that gives them £30000.

In addition, they will have had far greater sales on food, drink and merchandise than we will.

Allowing for merchandise and food, I reckon they will have taken close to double what we did yesterday, in spite of their £5 offer.

But again, what are WE doing differently to attract more supporters? Or what are WE doing to establish reason for consistently low crowds?

Will refer back to that story about Burnley ringing up lapsed fans to find out why they weren't attending home games. Maybe we need to find out why, then look at a solution. Relying on Keith Hill' ability alone cannot be the future.

These things might have been done, so let's hear about it and what plans there are for the rest of the season.

Agree with that - only problem is, if we did the same, we'd still only get 4,000 or so, not 9,000.

In fact, if we made it free, I doubt we fill the ground!

I think we supporters need to reluctantly and finally accept that whatever we say and whichever ideas we come up with for commercial improvement (individually or collectively)it seems that the 'powers that be' are happy with things as they are.

If that weren't the case, they would surely have taken some of the ideas on board and acted upon them. Perhaps the club don't crave any extra income. Perhaps the coffers are full and there is no need to promote the club beyond those who come through the turnstiles.

What other conclusion can be drawn ?

If its part of a bigger plan, there's things that fans can do to help. We need to find out:
* what would convince match attending supporters to become season ticket holders
* why lapsed supporters no longer attend
* what prompts the irregular supporter to attend a game
* match attending habits of those who do attend.
It then comes down to what is done with that information, and how it can be used to increase the number of times someone attends Spotland. Maybe an online survey could be launched where it finishes by providing the person taking part with a £5 entry voucher. I think we got around 150 replies to the Studds survey 18 months ago, so with the lure of the cheap admission, I think 250 replies could be achievable and such a response could be invaluable for the club.

I believe a regular poster suggested such an online survey to the club quite a while ago.

Same old arguments really:

1. Rochdale is a poor town and many cannot afford to attend football.

2. It is on the run up to Christmas and therefore there are other demands on finances.

3. Many so called 'average football fans' would rather watch games on TV than attend games.

4. Attending football games is not really part of the Asian culture.

Three young Asian lads were in the row behind me, so perhaps that's a start for point 4.

Agree with points 1-3. 4 is a poor excuse for low attendance. Look at Old. Trafford. Always plenty
of Asian fans there.

Helping to overcome the issue of Christmas being a constraint on people's time/money, an idea was posted on here a few weeks back suggesting that a 4 for the price of 3 ticket for the games over the christmas/NY period. Really clever one which the club should definitely consider. Money up front for them regardless if hungover fans forget to attend and a good deal for those fans who are hard up around christmas. A cracking present idea too.

9000 at Roots Hall is a barometre.

Ok 9000 is well beyond us but running something with some commitment and drive it would be fantastic to see 5000 home supporters on a day when we also have a half decent away following.

A good opportunity coming up is Fleetwood on the 14th.

Fleetwood a North West team and with the right offer in place and marketed properly could bring 2500 away fans??

Dale 5000 home supporters would be great to see.

£5 admission any stand.

This might only be slightly more than the admission revenue now but the publicity and good will generated just before christmas is priceless and if we turn in a good performance then how many would be back for the christmas double header of Mansfield on boxing day and Bristol Rovers on the 29th??

The club need to act now. The ON pitch product is amazing and well worth making the effort.

Just how do we get the lapsed and floater fans through the gates on a more regular basis.

Of course been here several times before and IT MUST come from the club NOT the fans.

It's nice to watch what you can, listen to what you can, and do what you can from distance. You buy the shirts, you buy the gear, you subscribe to Dale player.
I always follow these threads without comment ,they all rapidly come to the same conclusions.
The main issue is what do the Club want to achieve officially.
From my own perspective in this digital age there are things that can be achieved (the live broadcast of the fans forum was a small step forward)
My simple first step request would be a facility where I can digitally View or subscribe to the match day programme.
Admittedly it may not seem a lot but there must be a lot of Dale exiles who would love to read the programme as they listen to the match on Dale Player.
With a bit of nous and clubs being collaborative even away programmes could be available and earn a few coppers.
Look after the coppers and the £££s will look after themselves.
As for reduced prices .......hmmmm..... I personally am not to sure.
For the Dale its always been difficult; they fight the law of diminishing returns (reasons being the hard core are getting older and dying (sad to say but truthful and not being replaced with enough youth taking PRIDE in their birthplace ...their roots).
THE GRAND EXPERIMENT BOLD IN RISK would be to give almost free admission to everybody. Admission by programme (it's not a new concept if I remember rightly it was how clubs got around the first Sunday games ...........correct me if wrong) with a good coupon for the next game inside said programme.
If you can't attract fans with a practically free offer you wont attract them at all....except with a team punching ahead of their game and Winning and ALWAYS in the news . There in lies the Catch22.

3 games where Dale could have got (and finally did) get automatic promotion at home for the first time in decades.

That's the saturation point for RAFC in this town when you have the best possible position on the field with no special promotion off it.

This really says it all ..............how many have moved away or died since ...it's a hard fact to accept. Thank you Daley Lama!
You also have to factor out what the away support was .and the financial climate is now much worse.
Perhaps the club has already done the costs and seen that the benefits of investment are simply not there.
That the only way forward is youth on the pitch.
Eyre replaced Hill with the "potential" to groom.
Coleman replace Eyre in the panic to hold onto a higher divisional pay out.
Back to MR Keith Hill.............who in my opinion does get it right.......despite his critics.

Welcome to the messageboard ILMC, good to have another rational, experienced voice

Your point about Eyre is correct (as many of us said at the time) despite how it turned out

But moving on, on a regular basis the 4-5000 mark is about the best we can expect.

This current side has the potential to attract that number - so what are the club doing about it?

We have been approached by the company that digitises programmes, but their costs were too prohibitive given the number we could expect to sell.

ok if 2500 is too optimistic then say 1500.

add that to the 5000 saturation point discussed subsequently trying something has got to be better than the death by 1000 cuts of 2000 home regulars everyweek.
