This has been coming for a good few years now and is very sad for the football league. Coventry are part of the furniture of English football, I hope they come back from this.

If true, then please don't anyone come on with 'its their own fault' or 'so what'. We all know that we, as fans cannot stop owners of clubs ruining them. Its about time football supporters got together as one and lobbied the FA and the Football League to get everything in order.

Make Membership of the the FL come with a number of OBLIGATIONS in terms of securing finance. For example, any investor can put whatever they want into the clubs, but that it HAS to be a gift to the club; they cannot lend money to spend above the club's means only to try to claim it back once things don't work out.
Yes, that's the way business works, but isn't this football?

More should be done to redress the balance of the rest of football against the top 6. The TV wealth should be shared more evenly; a pre-requisite of any TV deal is that SKY (and other media outlets) stop painting the f-in picture that there are only 6 teams in English football recognising the 100+ other clubs that exist with their own fan base.

And what if the top 6 don't like it? Let them leave. Form the European Money League and let the rest of football get on with playing football.

If true, I am, so, so sad for Cov fans - a great fan base in my experience and Highfield Road was always a giggle. 1987 was a great FA Cup final.

The Football League should hold their head in shame for this one.

RIP, Coventry City...

Can we go out yet?

Complete mess. Feel sorry for the fans but they will rise again and no doubt have a laugh in the lower leagues like Wimbledon, Newport and Chester have done / are doing.

Agree with your sentiments generally, but since it's Coventry I did have a little chuckle (as I would if it were Norwich, Scum, Spurs or Arse).

I agree with what you are saying Dav but equally you can be an owner trying to do things the right way and the fans will get on your back.

Look at Palace, they've not really bought anyone because they want to invest in the ground and therefore secure their future maybe at the cost of this season, rather than 'doing a QPR' and spunking away a ton of cash. The fans are livid.

Very well written and completely right, there is no place for cheap comments- could well have been us a number of times- a tragedy for a city the size of Cov- all at a time when the Premiership is awash with money.

The owners of the Ricoh Arena are trying to take Northampton Town to court for £2.5m now, which seems pretty disgraceful to me...

----

Coventry City stadium owners suing Northampton Town in High Court

The owners of Coventry City’s Ricoh Arena are suing Northampton Town for damages in the High Court.

The Cobblers received a letter from Arena Coventry Limited (ACL) earlier this month, threatening legal action over the Sky Blues’ plans to play in Northampton for at least the next three seasons.

And ACL confirmed to the Chron today that it has now served High Court papers on the Cobblers, which the club has 14 days to respond to.

Cobblers chairman David Cardoza said the club’s position was the same as earlier in the month, when he said the action was “without any legal merit.”

ACL says it has a 25-year lease with Coventry City for them to play at the Ricoh, and the Cobblers are “inducing” the Sky Blues to play their home games at Sixfields.

The Cobblers say they have not entered an agreement with Coventry City Football Club Ltd, but have instead negotiated a deal with potential buyers of the Sky Blues.

ACL’s lawyer, James Powell, said: “We are taking this very seriously. It is with some regret that we have had to take this action, but as we didn’t get a clear and substantive response to the first letter, then we have to do something about it.

“If Northampton recognise their position, then I am sure it can be resolved.

“There is a contract in place which says Coventry City are contractually bound to play at the Ricoh Arena.

“Northampton Town have come along and entered into an agreement with a third party, which is effectively inducing Coventry City away from the Ricoh Arena to play in Northampton.

“We think there is a liability for a substantial sum of money from these actions.”

Mr Powell said the Cobblers have 14 days to respond to the summons, and 14 further days to file their case.

Speaking to the Chron this afternoon, Cobblers chairman David Cardoza said: “Our position has not changed, and it is being dealt with by our solicitors.”

The previous statement released to the Chron from the club said: “Northampton Town Football Club confirms that Arena Coventry Limited (ACL) has threatened the club with legal action in respect of Coventry City FC playing at Sixfields Stadium.

“The club was approached by Coventry City to play at Sixfields, so that Coventry City could fulfil its fixtures. The Football League has endorsed this arrangement.

“The threatened action by ACL is without any legal merit and is not conducive to the greater good of the game. Northampton Town Football Club will not be bullied or threatened.”

The Coventry Telegraph has reported how ACL has also offered to dramatically lower its rent demands to keep the Sky Blues at the Ricoh.

ACL has tabled a new ten-year rent offer as a condition for signing a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) to bring the club out of administration.

The Telegraph reports that the new rental offer is £150,000-a-year while the club remains in League One - down from £1.3million-a-year.

So doesnt this mean disappear altogether? Not exist at all?

Or is it more like a Portsmouth slip down the leagues scenario but remain a club operating at a non league type level?

The latter would suck for real fans but wouldnt be too bad

With probably a couple of exceptions, I don't want to see any club go bust but this has been coming for a while now.

Football clubs seem to get away with huge debts that if a mere mortal business they'd have been wound up long ago. It seems that banks, debtors etc have finally had enough especially when they see money is there but just going on stupidly insane player wages. The top players in the lower divisions still earn good money.

Chester City FC were liquidated a few years back I seem to remember, but they're back as Chester FC, albeit in a much lower division. Perhaps Coventry City will drop the City and reform in the doldrums of British football.
I never liked them but it's always a shame to see clubs vanish.

I don't quite get why they didn't take the offer from the stadium to play rent free, i know they would miss out on the money from food & drink but that would have been better than nothing.

I'll be honest I've always hated Coventry but really hope they get out of this, the football league really need to do more

Whatever happens, they won't disappear. You watch - there are thousands of 'closet' Cov fans out there and they will do a Wimbledon. We will watch them, hopefully, and with a modest investment, rise back to the football league in a much better state at a different location.

OR

Cov Council will watch the owners of the Ricoh go belly up on the Ricoh venture at least, buy the ground, lease it back to new owners of Cov at a manageable price and we will be back again.

The problem is around timing. For this to work at the Ricoh, Cov has to be a League One club and so this all has to happen in days rather than months or years. Maybe someone has a plan?

Is there a bit of sensationalism going on here? Liquidation suggests that it's all over for the club. All assets to be sold. That's the end.

But apparently they'll still play albeit with a crippling points penalty no doubt.
