First Game 23:39 - Jun 21 with 1630 views | coomster | Much has been said about the U's opening game this season against Gillingham. This is because it is the same start as we had for our promotion year. It is also the same as our very first game in the Football League when we played to a 0-0 tie. This was back in 1951, if I remember rightly.
First Game on 09:43 - Jun 22 with 1612 views | wessex_exile | We've actually already played Gillingham five times (and Lincoln) as first match of the season, so this season will be the record 6th occasion: In the 1938/39 Southern League, when we won 2-0 at Layer Rd and went on to win the league. In 1947/48 (on the 7th June!!!) we played at Priestfield in the semi-final of the Southern League Cup, losing 3-2 but going on to finish 4th in the Southern League that season. The aforementioned game in 1950/51 at Priestfield, which was our first game in the Football League (Division 3 South as it was then), drawing 0-0 and going on to finish that season in 16th place. In 1980/81 the first match of the season was actually a home tie in the League Cup at Layer Rd, which Gillingham won 2-0, a season that saw us finish 22nd in the 3rd Division and relegated. ...and of course 2005/06 at Priestfield, when we lost the game 2-1 but went on to finish 2nd in the league and promoted to the Championship. So, in summary, as omens go it has been (technically) two automatic promotion slots, one play-off position, one mid-table mediocrity and one relegation so far when playing Gillingham first match of the season.

So basically, what you are saying Wessex is that next season we could either go up, get into the play offs, be a mid tale team or get relegated.
