Another club in London manages to secure space for new ground? 13:25 - Feb 19 with 4423 viewsJimboqpr

As someone from Barnet, I'm amazed they've finally got into this position! Underhill has always been their home and great to see they might have finally got a plot of land to bring them back to the town. Fair play to Tony Kleanthous! Seems like they've still some work to do on the process though

Wasn't the problem that the club/chairman and the Tory council, and particularly Brian Coleman, absolutely hated each other? Coleman said if he had his way he'd have rung out the bells of every church in the borough when Barnet went out of the league. Fat cnt. Council flipped to Labour at the last election so presumably a thawing.

That site is currently a disused cricket pavilion and pitch, and a patch of grass that isn't used for very much at all and is essentially under water all the time - or it is when I try to run across it anyway. The old Underhill ground used to be on the bit where the school is on those plans - and you can see how severe the famous slope was because they had to build the school on two levels.

Have to say I'm pretty surprised. I always felt the chairman was angling after that move to The Hive anyway so the council being dicks actually quite suited him. What becomes of The Hive now? Odd place, been a few times, they seem to put up and take down a different stand every time I'm there.

And will Martin Allen be waiting for them there? Must be due his 17th stint in charge by now?

Residents from Osterley are mounting a challenge. So this could be a minimum 10-pager.

Not defending our lot but a 6-8k ground on the outskirts of London is probably easier to secure than a 30k+ stadium as close to W12 as possible.

Barnet's new site/ground isn't secured yet, it's at pre-application stage.

Love the idea of a school drop-off zone. Will really help with getting the residents onside.

Yeah, I think there's been numerous issues and arguments over the years between the owners and the council, but I do vaguely remember that comment about the church bells. What a prck. I remember when I was a kid (90s & 00s) there was always talk of them moving to Copthall which they eventually ended up giving to Saracens which caused another big row.

I think the original idea was that the Hive would be their perm training ground and temp home whilst they found a new site (that was over ten years ago!). I haven't been to a home game since they left Underhill, pretty sure Davids was in charge. Didn't see the point of going to a place to watch your home town club not play in your hometown. Travelling around to watch the R's is more than enough for me!

Must be time for Martin Allen to make a return. Maybe Barry Fry can be DoF!

I'm reasonably familiar with Canons Park / Queensbury, occasionally wondered where Barnet fans went for a pre match drink. As far as I know, there's a small bar down near the roundabout on Honeypot Lane as you head toward Harrow, or whatever's left of the pubs in Edgware.

I believe that Arsenal ladies also play at The Hive so I would suspect that Arsenal may find a few coppers down their sofa to renovate it in red and white.

I’ve got fond memories of that night we played at underhill in the cup.

What was that keepers name? Gary Phillips? Two sides of the ground were rangers and they slaughtered him.

Every goal kick was, “woooooooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhh….YOU FAT BASTARD!!!” And he’d turn round and give a ‘Mr Universe’ pose, only to be met with chants about Mr Blobby.

God knows what the residents thought whose back gardens you could look into.

Well known 'underage' venue back in the day.

I thought they'd be at The Hive forever. Tidy little stadium with great facilities.
Underhill was certainly unique!
I lived a 20 minute walk from there as a kid and used to jump the fence and walk around the empty stadium during school holidays

Wasn’t there once the Battle of Barnet? I was around in the early 70s and knew nothing about it at the time.

I used to live on Honeypot Lane and taught at Kingsbury High. When I was in the area a few years back literally every pub from my youth had gone. You had to go out to the villages to find one

The most horrendously violent night I've ever known. Every London club turned out to defend little Barnet and the Loft boys were corralled under the one stand, which became like Rourke's Drift. Non stop fighting, no discernible police presence, triage on the side of the pitch, completely mad. Still have nightmares about it now

Apparently the council have its 'highly unlikely' the plans will be accepted so that's probably the end of that!
