MW talks a lot about sports science but it seems to me his team are more lucky than good. Hamstring after hamstring shows something is being done wrong. I can't think of any team ever who have this constant problem and MW should maybe stop lauding these people and questioning their methods. As in every profession you get good and bad people and perhaps we have a bad lot.Was last year lucky? What has changed? One thing is for sure the method must be wrong somewherr

Maybe you're right, but maybe it shows up just how small our squad is too.
We are in the top two for minutes played per player, apparently.
Maybe if he and the S&C people weren't so careful things would be even worse.
I don't have any answers, just don't think we have enough facts to draw any conclusions.

Another question to ponder is how many of the injuries were impact injuries - Willock's was, for instance. An impact injury to a muscle can no more be avoided than a non-muscular injury to a bone.

Edit - sp. check. It's very early!

Injuries is the only reason for our poor form.

MW has had to build a squad on a limited budget and the result of that is we have a team full of players with a history of injuries. That’s the reason we’ve got them all on the cheap. I think a lot of fans forget this when searching for an explanation for our poor forms. It’s nothing to do with tactics or a plan b. It’s all down to injuries and fitness. If anything MW tactics are the reason for why we’ve done so well and have been ideal for the players we have.

The coaches have had to carefully manage game time, but given the nature of the championship and the depth of our squad it was always going to catch up with us. The signs have been there all season.

Our players are all technically proficient and have played great football this season. I’m very proud of the changes that have happened around the club and think Warbs has done a fantastic job.

We have to accept that there are limitations and we’re seeing them now.

I hope we stick with Warbs, offload a one or two players in the summer and invest in decent replacements. Refine the team, don’t start from scratch.

When Ron Atkinson managed United, a physio student asked if he could do a project there. At the time United were losing loads of players to hamstring injuries and the student was asked to look into it.

After a few training session he pointed out that their training methods focused to much on the quads and did not develop the other leg muscles to the same degree. Consequently, the hamstrings were over stretched.

I’ve had two physios in my time who’ve worked with football clubs, and both have questioned the practices observed, therefore it’s not inconceivable that there might be an issue and certainly Rangers might consider reviewing practices.

That said, at the start of the season there was a thread about who was going to be our most influential player. I opted not for a player, but the medical team given the crocks and oldies we have in the squad.

You could be right, we are working with a tight squad and there is some luck involved when it comes to contact injuries.

I remember watching the Sheffield United game and the commentator saying about them resting Jack Robinson and how clever their manager was for doing it. Just shows how far away we are really that people in the same space as us are rotating players we couldn't afford to keep. That point was completely lost by sky of course.

I too have wondered about our small squad being a major factor in our alarming drop in form. If players are injured or exhausted and cannot be adequately replaced, it's pretty obvious what will happen.

Warburton says he likes a small squad as it means all players can contribute through the season which is good for morale. That appeared to work for much of the season but, as injuries have mounted, sadly no longer.

Should he still be in post next season, I think he should change his mind and have sufficient first team players in place to keep a top 6 challenge going. That obviously has budget implications but nonetheless seems a necessary change in squad management to me.

That’s a great post. I hadn’t thought about the fact we have a small squad full of injury prone players who we’d picked up on the cheap. Makes perfect sense.

Scooters, Tunes, Trainers and QPR.

What short memories we all have.
Wasn’t it only last season that we were all lauding the player management and resulting lack of injuries.
It just seems that time has caught up with having such a small squad.

I think people forget that Amos and Field are coming back to a first season after their second massive long term injuries, Charlie also has a lot of injury issues, De Wijs was a walking injury, so that is already 4 players who are in and out of the team. You add Willock, Dieng, Wallace, Grey (at times), Johansen (at times) and a heap of other goalkeepers to that list and you start to see how small this squad really is and how much MW really has to deal with.

Never knowingly right.

How small is our squad when compared with the other Champ teams?

Got bored and looked at Wiki squads. This does not include U23 players who may have made appearances. It includes goalkeepers but not loaned out players. Hopefully I counted right!!!

Boro 30/6 GK
Hudd 29/3
Hull 31/3
Barnsley 24/3
Sheff U 29/3
Stoke 31/4
PNE 32/4
B'Pool 32/4
B'burn 34/4
Derby 22/2
Forest 26/2 you all thought it would be 126
P'boro 35/2
Cov 22/2
Brum 34/3
WBA 25/3
Luton 27/4
Swan 24/2
Card 28/3
Bristol 28/3
Reading 30/3
AFCB 29/3
Fulham 26/3
Millwall 29/3

QPR 28/6 not including Murphy Mahoney

WE are by no means the largest squad but 6 keepers one of which is Dillon Barnes( 2 more years on his contract?) quite a few veterans and 4 loans 2 emergency keepers then our squad is relatively small compared with some.

Peterborough have the largest and look where that's got them, maybe they were all on the pitch at the same time when we played them.

Coventry have 20 outfield players to call on not including youth that have come through. Faysal was praised by MW last season saying he needs games under his belt but doesnt even get a look in. When he did play he did ok, never shirked a challenge and looked after the ball. How crushed must he feel looking at his career going nowhere. Must be in his early 20's by now

captains fantastic

When we had a break in games a couple of months ago, MW said it had been really welcome and that they’d been able to get some strength work done for the first time in a while. Fatigue is one of the main causes of hamstring injuries, so game after game without rest and restoration eventually takes its toll.

Good bit of research enfield but I wonder if Wiki is entirely accurate on squad numbers? I find it frustrating that QPR's website is never up to date with squad personnel for the first team, let alone youth and the women's teams. Perhaps there is a definitive list on the EFL website?

My memory, though it is getting bad these days, seems to be that Warbs always wanted a backup for each position. Of course when the backup also gets injured, then there's not much we can do - see wing backs.

To the op or anyone who knows, who amongst the current injuries has a hamstring problem?

Marshall, I know, caused by a heavy pitch and playing on as all subs used. Bad luck really!

Anyone else?

I think the facts are clear to see Bri.
Appalling injury record throughout the team and this with a fancy new fangled science department which quite frankly is a load of shite and I'd rather the money went on some decent footballers.

maybe within a squad, when you lose form, injuries are piling up, the players left ( like many in the workplace) feel the added burden, stress and "try" harder thereby stretching the muscle to far and ends up injured?

Willock and Dieng I think, and both impact injuries (nothing we could do about that). Dickie, Wallace, Hendrick too or so I've read.

Do we know what grade these latest hamstring injuries are?

Grade 3 is serious and long term recovery
Grades 1 & 2 are generally diagnosed when the recipient goes ‘ouch’ and is advised to put his feet up for the sunset part of the season.

I think I may be developing a grade one that’ll keep me away from the Derby bank holiday game.

Very naive to think our collapse is just down to injuries.
Team selection, formation, tactics, substitutions, luck etc have all played a huge part.

I’m reminded of the Paul Walsh story at Liverpool. He’s done his ankle ligaments. The Liverpool physio at the time shows him a newly acquired machine designed to create electronic impulses to encourage healing of the affected area. Walsh visits the treatment room for months attaching the machine to his ankle. One day another physio is visiting, looks at Walsh and says it’s not switched on. It hadn’t been switched on from day one.

Valid point.

January 2020 my former colleagues and I were invited to see Bayern Munich at their winter training camp in Doha. Technically fascinating to watch and you could see all the drills were designed to both strengthen and stretch all the muscles.

I do yoga - not very well - but I find it incredibly beneficial. Giggs took it up in his 20s and was frolicking along well into his late 39s. Lots to be said for a proper stretching regime correctly managed of course.
