The decision is with the players, advised by their agents.

The club can only offer them so much, to stay within FFP, budget and to keep squad harmony. They may feel they can get an awful lot more than we can offer them elsewhere.

It is not incompetence by the club. They put this clause in their contracts and otherwise they could be lost, for only any compensation we might be due, this summer.

They haven't really gone overboard with this announcement, just a little positive spin on it. This is fine as it is good news that we can still negotiate and/or we can see what offers we can get this summer.

Having a little bit more FFP headroom is a small positive that will allow us to be a little more competitive with signings and new contracts, if they are also being pursued by some clubs with similar budgets to ourselves. It will not allow us to compete with the bigger clubs in our division.

Serious question. Everyone seems to take what Dave Mc says as gospel. Why? Whenever i’ve read any of his stuff it’s either subjective stuff like this that anyone could say, or it’s about stuff that’s already been confirmed by the club or other journalists. It looks like he might have had the inside line once but hasn’t any more but’is still living off it? Or am I being unfair?

He's probably the most well sourced journalist reporting on QPR around, I think you can count on one hand the number of times he has put out a story that has been wrong in the last 20+ years and still have enough fingers left to put on a finger puppet show

Agree with all of this.

After 2011 we were 'spoilt' a bit with the possibility of Tony being the second messiah. But before that, even under Tango and Cash, apart from them trying to turn part of SAR into a boutique disco, the club was always run on a very tight leash. The current owners went beyond their means and now we are kind of back where we were, minus the collection buckets. Remember those? Not so long ago?

Now we are back to what we were. A club that has to find talent, bring it on, sell it, find the next crop and repeat. Fans will complain that we can never grow like that but I think as of 2020 this is what we are. We are a small club that can play a great brand of football, bring on young talent, bring in older heads, get higher in the table to satisfy the fans and be lurking around the play-offs perhaps in a few years. Beyond that getting back to the Prem looks unlikely so we have to really be a club that plays the best type of football and be one of the main competitive sides in this division.

Never knowingly right.

Thinking out loud, if we assume we're getting a wedge for Eze in the summer, does that mean we could then offer these two more and get them signed up?

Ya, I would say so.

1. Despite the club believing that FFP is about to change everything, I am not so sure. Bristol City willing to gamble on Wells blowing what we could offer out of the water. Clubs with parachute payments will also be willing and can pay more. If money really becomes so short, it will likely increase the number of players running down their contracts to avoid transfer fees maximising their own income. So, I see how FFP will put us in a better position.

2. "Loyalty" does not exist. BOS and Manning know how good they can be in the Championship. They know that they can earn more with a team actually competing rather than one cost cutting and hoping to improve.

3. Hopefully, as the more optimistic posters seem to believe, the club will tie them down and they will stay to build a team round them. The model we are striving towards relies on a small turn round - sell one or two for big money, bring in three to four "gambles"hoping that one or two develop on to the conveyer belt for later sales. We cannot go through next summer selling all of our saleable assets especially when we have three or four key players who are near to retirement.

I am a pessimist (really?) when it comes to Rangers and struggle to see how this is good news. So hopeful that I am wrong...

Can we go out yet?

Preston having been run like that for years but we've only been doing it for a couple of years at most

That's the difference and these things take time

Exactly. Until very recently you could sum up the two clubs, from a player/agent perspective, like this.

QPR = fat pay packet, set up for life/end career.
Preston = lower wages, progress career.

We’re now trying to become more like Preston but in truth it’s fcking difficult, if only to change mindsets let alone the rest and takes time.

On 1 - in addition to the bigger, better stadium which they share and use during the week, and the bigger gates, Bristol City sold two defenders for north of £30m in the summer. Same reason Brentford spent in the summer, sold loads of players for big money. The only way we compete at the top end under our current circumstances and the rules as they stand is regularly selling players for big money. It’s why the idea we should let BOS and Manning walk away for free next summer is so daft.

The 16th place thing is a case of correlation without causation. It's a coincidence plus in any case, the season has not finished! 13 games to go, people.

I suspect - I am not in the know - that our approach will for the foreseeable future be: See where we are come the winter transfer window, if we are in with a shout of promotion, invest (a bit), if not, divest.

You're ignoring what he's saying though.

We all KNOW about FFP... blimey even a mouth breathing wailing pencil dick like myself understand the restrictions the club is under...... but so are all the other clubs.

Clubs such as PNE are lauded in one breath on here at being able to achieve more than us on far lower wage bills, but then when it's noted we should be doing as well as them you get the FFP tub thumped. What's it to be?

Of course I don't know the ins and out of the clubs balance sheet but I'd like to think we can compete with PNE, Millwall or even Bentford in terms of squad cost!!!

And don't start me on exempt FFP costs such as Warren Farm!!!!

"Of course I don't know [...] but I'd like to think "

Yeah I'll stop you there. Just pointing at other clubs who happen to be higher in the table and moaning about us is actually you ignoring what people are saying.

If we want to talk about Preston they're a work of several years steady progress with a clear identity and a workmanlike foundation that has grown together. They didn't build from a position where they were deep in the red or under sanction. When a good bid comes in they sell - Hugill 9m, Cunningham 3m, Robinson 7m - then spend about a quarter of it. As it goes their recruitment has more kept them steady than made new stars or raised the bar - Moult, Bodin and Stockley each around 700k haven't really caught fire but solid enough. Not sure where Bayliss has got to but Storey is very good. They've just tried pushing the boat out with Scott Sinclair, see where that gets them but not far you'd imagine.

None of this is any different to what we're in the process of doing or proves they're any more ambitious than we are. They're just further along than we are, from a less messy start.

The club has 2 options, 1) invoke the one year extension on their current contract or 2) let them go at the end of season. Given that we're never going to let them go at the end of the season then it has the be option 1).

The club would love them both to sign new contracts but neither player is willing sign one. Not saying I blame either player but how can this possibly be excellent news?

Where does it say neither player is willing to sign a new contract?

Similar to the point I was seeking to make - I had assumed that we would use the ‘extra’ FFP headroom created by letting go of Leistner, Scowen and Wells (£50k/week)to fix them on long contracts, not to keep them, but in order to sell them both + Eze in the summer for £40-£50m, rather than get good value for Eze and be forced to sell BOS and Manning for peanuts.

Contracts Extended on 21:58 - Feb 19 by QPR_Jim

Reading the comments before looking at the link I thought we'd dragged the players down to the stadium to pose with shirts and signing a contract. No, just a short statement on the club's website informing us we'd taken the option. Not exactly the spin and PR exercise that it was proclaimed to be.

Is it possible that triggering the extension strengthens our hand in negotiations?

Why should any player want to stay at QPR instead of going to the premier League, I don't know perhaps they can ask Alex Smithies and Luke Freeman if the extra cash is worth sitting on the bench.

and yes he is good going forward but Manning a PL player - really?

Well they’re hardly going to come out and say “talks have broken down so we’ve exercised the options so we can try and sell them for a few quid this summer”, are they? Just because someone says something doesn’t make it true. How much of what TF has said over the years has turned out to be true?

I was also saying that we shouldn't get excited about Eze going to Spurs in Jan for Amos and Walker Peters - was told that came from a very 'reliable' twitter source - 15 all!

Just get fed up with certain people on here putting a negative spin on everything and some even disappearing altogether when we win only returning after the next defeat.

I really should stick to explaining the offside law - it s much more fun than this transfer speculation nonsense!

Just checked as I don't normally get involved much in the transfer guesswork and yes I agree I did view it with scepticism and actually requoted something you wrote about how high is the proportion of transfer stories that simply do not happen.

I never said anyone was insane on that thread even those claiming that signing him meant that Eze and/or BOS were off in Jan!

Or use that wedge to improve the squad, nothing like a promotion campaign to increase the value of players or, for that matter, get BOS to sign on the dotted line during 20/21.

We’ve got to stop being so unambitious.
[Post edited 20 Feb 2020 9:37]

Bit unfair in this context I think.

You're saying when we get a wedge for Eze we should show ambition by reinvesting at least a decent chunk of it. I agree.

But harsh to imply that we haven't been ambitious in those circumstances in the past, as we haven't sold anyone for any decent amount of money for years.

If Eze goes this summer, what we do with the money will definitely say a lot about what the next 5 years at QPR will be like

Just on this - I think he is often asked questions on twitter and is honest enough to say he does not know, or that the particular story was broken by someone else- so he does not pretend to be an oracle.

He does have to make a living though so cannot give everything away or may be aware of things at times that have been told to him in confidence so can be a bit cryptic at times.

I think he has a point of view - that he is old enough to recall a time when the club was very well run by people who cared and large parts of the last 15 or so years -well that has not been the case.
