I was surprised at how many groups of away fans were wandering around the area looking for any pub that would let them in.Very few of them were wearing any colours.Do we not have a designated away pub anymore? And if not,why was the decision made to not sell alcohol in the ground in the away end?
We allow them to have both tiers of the away end and then we're caught out when they all turn up at the last minute because they can't drink in the ground.Maybe it was a police decision. But it doesn't make much sense to me.

I do find it amusing that issues like this come up and the blame is put on to 'pisshead fans' who probably deserved what they got. Like all of us here have not at some point been dealt with v poorly by police/stewards simply because they assume that all football fans are the same and should be treated as such.

I don't know the extent of the the truth either and it sounds like a lot of the issues were made worse by the Birmingham supporters, but I wouldn't make too many assumptions of this being all one-sided.

I have to disagree on this because, rightly or wrongly, I would expect that all clubs have to perform regular risk assessments (or should be) where they should be going through every possible scenario that could present itself ahead of a large scale event and 14k-18K people arriving at LR is a large scale event - even if that event happens every other Saturday between August and May. If there was an accident on the M40 at Saturday lunchtime, which meant that 3K Birmingham supporters were arriving in to the School End area en masse at 2:50pm, there should be contingency arrangements around ensuring that the arriving coaches are coordinated from the time they arrive in to the LF vacinity.

I fully accept that there will have been a significant number of pissed brummies arriving after necking their last pints really late, but that happens at the entrance to The Loft most weeks as well from what I can see and it amounts to the same thing if hundreds are arriving at an entrance all at the same time. It doesn't matter why they are late, it's a question of how do you cope with that situation.

Perhaps the club DID do the right thing and it did go to plan because we do not have the facts, but that is why the club's match day operational procedures need to be checked to see what was done, by whom and why and whether it was as per the agreed plan and what lessons were learnt from it. We do have an old style cramped stadium in a cramped busy area and we do not want to be the ones with our own Hillesborough tragety.
IMHO anyway.

Fair enough. But there wasn't an accident on the M40. All I know is that if I turned up to any football match five minutes to kick off I wouldn't expect to get in to see the kick off. Moreover, I wouldn't be blaming the stewards, the football club, the old bill or any one else I could think of for missing some of the match. There is only one person to blame, and that would be me.

I agree Simmo and drunk or not, often the treatment of away supporters leaves much to be desired.

I'm sure there will be an enquiry around the stewarding on Saturday. If nothing else to establish how two fans managed to stroll onto the pitch and have a punch up without any challenge whatsoever.

On that small heath alliance forum;"if QPR can't handle that amount of away fans......". Again, people engaging mouth/keyboard before brain.

Do they not think we managed 2 out of 3 years in the PL OK with 3K away fans in both tiers?

I do think a small amount of pissed fans [irrespective of what I feel about drinking & arrive at 5 mins before kick off) should easily be handled.

There's more to this though, there must be. There was a heavy police presence all around the Bush, more than I saw for any visit of a top PL club.

that was because most of the police and stewards were outside the ground dealing with the late comers still.

The police presence was huge on saturday, most i've seen since we played Millwall a few years back and a lot of Birmingham fans were trying to cause trouble, few of them tried to get in the white horse during the game but were turned away whilst giving plenty of racial abuse to the two doorman.

Plenty of times I've stayed in the pub for one more pint and ended up missing kick off but thats my own fault and if i get to the ground as there is a queue like there was for Liverpool at home last season I just have to get on with it rather than charge the gates and try and force my way in

Dave, for clarity I'm not defending Birmingham's supporters - merely making a point that policing and stewarding of away supporters is often heavy handed. I also cannot agree that the late arrival of supporters created the situation where two people were allowed to walk on the playing area without challenge. I was sat close to that corner and there were stewards there but they were very slow to react.

Walked thru the Bush Im sure it was just before midday. Loads of Brummies drinking outside that toilet of a watering hole Belushi's just by the roundabout. Anyone would've thought the Antiques Roadshow were doing a sportswear causal special edition. Even at that early hour they all had tear-up in their eyes.

why bother about drunk brummys being late? they ferked about all day and sod em.
chelsea made me queue for 20 odd mins and demand i was searched to stop me having an anti jt flag..who did what then? and i paid £55 plus fee so £58!

They were down in numbers, on a mission and looking to cause trouble anywhere they could. They were looking to have a go at anyone, whether you were interested or not. They now try to make out they were the ones that were hard done by, sorry I have no sympathy for them. They were the ones getting tanked up till late on and they were the ones who turned up late and they were the ones who were causing fights with Police, Stewards and anyone else around them. Why because they were in a mob and looking for trouble at what they saw as an easy place to do it. If you boast that you are going looking for trouble, don't whinge after if the Police are not gently, gently with you.

the incident on the pitch was just bizarre and no idea how or why that happened but think the lack of police and stewards in that area was probably due to them having to be outside the stadium at that point

Even the most militant (disgrace, tinpot etc) admit that the police closed the gates due to two 'tipsy' (read annihilated) fans causing trouble and admit that that the issues were caused by some of their fans trying to charge police because they'd left the pub at 2.55 and we're now missing the game.

A couple of their fans on there say quite clearly that they entered the ground easily around 2.30 and it was largely empty....

Whilst I gave no doubt that police &/or stewards didn't inadvertently add to the issues, the underlying theme is drunk fans leaving the pub at the last second.

I walked past the cage in Ellerslie Road at about 2.45 just as about 20 or more Brummies charged through the cordon of stewards in the cage who were checking bags etc.
They didn't seem to concerned about there own fans that they knocked out of the way or that there were women and kids there. The police who were outside the cage went to go in and were blocked by some of the other fans. I walked on and was nearly flattened by two police horses that were charging down the road presumably to go and help.

and I agree mate, but the problem is that all organisations hosting any events should be and probably have to, look at every possible scenario to avoid another Hillsborough and my M40 scenario was just one example of the things they have to plan for and I would suspect there would be a regular review meeting with local old bill during the season to discuss forthcoming potential flash points.

perhaps if they turned up on time rather than at 5 to 3 they might have made kick off.

Seems a bit mad for fans to surge forward and cause a crush and then blame QPR for it

Oh dear me, that's sensational.

I almost gave up after a man calling us mercenaries drinks in Brewdog, but I stayed on, and when he compares queuing outside Loftus Road to unarmed black people being killed by the police in the US and IRA terrorist attacks, well, it's just beautiful.

"I saw journalists from the Daily Mail, the Mirror and the Telegraph retweeting QPR’s lies. I swtched my phone off and threw it against the seat of the train and wiped a tear from my eye.

‘When will somebody stick up for the people of Birmingham?‘ I asked myself."

I am enjoying the idea we control the media though

Somebody who drinks in Brew Dog and didn't think that foul on Polter was the most obvious penalty in the world isn't worth listening to really. That said, if I rolled up to a football ground at 2.45 with a £32 ticket in hand and didn't get in until 25 minutes into the first half I'd be fcking steaming as well.

I am certainly not defending the Birmingham fans, but one of the major reasons that they arrived at the ground at that time was The Met.

They escorted them from pubs to ground at a snail's pace. When I left the Defector's they were on the opposite side of the road ( I would estimate 500 of them) & within a minute we were looking back at them far in the distance. I would think their "walk" took over 30 minutes duration.

I would doubt that they were actually allowed to leave the pub earlier as the police were intent on the escort & probably had pre determined what time they would reach the ground.

I doubt that Queens Park Rangers had any say in the matter & I assume that The Met were acting on information received.

Exactly what I thought Mr P.
Obviously it will have to be investigated and I'm sure there's plenty of video evidence. Seemed to me a large group just wanted a tear up.
Like its been pointed out earlier,we haven't had problems before when selling out the school end.

MESSAGE FROM BIRMINGHAM CITY CRITICIZING QPR

'Birmingham City Football Club reiterates its zero tolerance policy to anti-social behaviour by supporters.

'We note allegations of coin throwing arising from the match at QPR on Saturday and we stress that the club will take the strongest possible action in dealing with any individual found to have indulged in such a deplorable act.

'The club also wishes to express its extreme disappointment that statements were released to the media during and after the match by QPR and Metropolitan Police without consultation with Birmingham City FC or West Midlands Police.

'A number of issues have since been brought to our attention from Saturday's match in regard the stewarding and policing that are of concern to the Club and our supporters.

'We read from the Metropolitan Police's statement that three men were arrested, one for pitch encroachment. The QPR supporter who walked round pitchside to confront Birmingham City supporters was, we understand, not arrested.

'We will be making official representation to QPR, Metropolitan Police and West Midlands Police about these issues in order to ascertain the full facts of Saturday's events and gather evidence.

'As a club we abhor violence and anti-social behaviour at football matches and we will cooperate fully with the relevant authorities to ensure that the necessary and just punishments will be meted out to those responsible.'

Why would they have to consult with Birmingham or West Midlands police about something that happened in London? The whole city is anti-social so their zero tolerance policy is fked.
