Thread | Support the club through the club shop

I wondered what people thought about trying to encourage Dale fans to support the club at this time by ordering items from the club shop?
I think it's still open for online orders.
Even if it's just buying one of the cheaper items, every little helps, I suppose.
Apologies if this has been picked up in another thread already, but just wanted to float it as an idea.
There might even be potential for encouraging fans of other teams to do the same for their clubs. |

For me, Joey played his best football after Christmas in our first season back in League 1 before picking up an injury (if my memory serves me right).
He played behind the striker and looked threatening, particularly in the air. I thought we were really about to see him blossom and turn into the player many people thought they saw glimpses of in the years before.
Shame really.
I for one wouldn't be against having him back, but he has to be fit. Otherwise it's just a wage we could use better. |

The most shocking thing I saw from last nights ref was an incident in the second half at the Sandy Lane end. The ref had just missed a blatant push on Grant in the build-up to an attack from Dale. The play resulted in a corner and, because of the sparce attendance, it was pretty quiet apart from a Dale fan explaining that the ref should use his assistant if he has probelms with his eyes. The Dale fan added a few choice words but nothing outrageous, to which the ref looked into the crowd and replied,"nice language that is, really nice language."
I think this is the first time I have ever seen or heard a ref actually respond to a crowd. I thought it was hugely unprofessional given that a) there was a crowded penalty box with players grabbing chunks of each other before a corner came in which he should have been concentrating on and b) it gave the impression that the crowd had got to the ref!
The lack of consistency of the refs we've had at home this year has been the most frustrating point for me. 50/50s are fair enough but when the refs have different policies towards contesting headers, for example, each week it must be a nightmare for the players to know what they can and cannot do. I think this is quite a good idea. Bit of an extra money spinner for the club too.
I was a guest of the match sponsor against Burton (I have a season ticket in the Sandy but I'm not turning down a free 3 course meal, free bar and a comfy seat!) and was asked to pick the MOTM as one of the only regular Dale fans in the box. Picked Lillis for his excellent save from the corner in the first half and also for a number of other good stops. If I'm honest there wasn't much competition on Saturday.
I think letting fans text in their vote for MOTM will make the award a bit more meaningful. Most of the guys in our box enjoyed the day but didn't really know the players so wouldn't be in the best position to judge. That's why we usually end up with the goal scorer being MOTM. Interestingly, I was asked at about 75 minutes who was the MOTM. |

Couldn't disagree more. Funny how different people can see a game/performance.
I thought his distribution was a great feature of his play, particularly over distance. I can only recall one poor ball which put us under a bit of pressure.
Stood in the Sandy next to some old timers who were calling for him and others just to lump it up front but I was impressed with his patience in looking for the right ball, whether that was a short sideways pass or a ball up to Dele.
He's by no way the finished article but I think he has a good footballing brain and will improve with more game-time.
I thought the defence was pretty impressive as a unit. Phil Edwards is unrecognisable from last season. Both wing-backs look confident and are not afraid of putting in a meaty challenge when required.
Personally, I like the way we build up slowly from the back and will only play balls forward when there is a definite option. I respect the guys who have been coming for years in the Sandy, but the constant calls for the ball to be lofted forward aimlessly and the way they get on the backs of our players does get tiring. There are a couple of old blokes who are good value with the comments they come out with though. All part and parcel of the Sandy Lane experience.

Turns out I just didn't read the form closely enough and didn't put down for the postage. Colin Garlick emailed back within 2 hours which I think is pretty good service.
In my defence, it's sort of tucked away in a box at the bottom.
If I'm honest that's the sort of 'defence' that Neil Trotman applied last season. |

Quick question: when do season tickets arrive?
I know they are still doing the special promotion offers so I haven't been expecting to arrive but this is my first season ticket so just wondered if anyone knew when they usually arrive?

Interesting responses so far. I just remember giving Lincoln fans a couple of quid when I was about 13-14 at an away game when they were really struggling (when aren't they!) and that sort of solidarity stays with me.
I agree that Darlo has been run terribly but I don't think the fans are to blame for that.
Anyone who turns up week in week out to watch their club, particularly at Darlo's level, shares something with me - a passion and committment to their local team.
Any club going to the wall when there is an alternative that could save the club, refound it on a sustainable footing and ensure that it is run in the interest of the fans and the community would be a tragedy.
I think I'll be making a contribution as an individual but it'll be relatively small.

I'm sure many of you will have seen news of an attempt by some Darlington fans to look into making a fans' bid to take over their club.
Darlington Supports United - http://www.darlosupportersunited.com/ - are looking at raising £250k to take over the club and run it as a co-op. That's a long way off though and at this stage they are just investigating the possibility of fan ownership.
My question is, would Dale fans and the Dale Supporters Trust be willing to make a contribution if they go down the fan ownership route?
I know we are a small club and whilst the Supporters Trust has some money, it clearly isn't mega-bucks, but a small contribution would be symbolic and could lead to more supporters groups doing the same.
My personal view is that Darlington has been messed about by a series of megalomaniac owners who have brought a historic club to its knees. There is now a chance that the fans could take over the club if they could raise the cash and that as fellow football fans, with many of us concerned about club ownership in the game, we ought to stand with the Darlington fans and offer our support.
I for one want to see the money that has been raised by our Trust go on progressing our club. However, given that we don't look likely to be needing the majority of our cash any time soon, would it not be a fantastic gesture to show some solidarity with other loyal fans by making a small contribution to their efforts at saving their club?
The Darlo fans' efforts might not come to anything and therefore our offer of cash would not be needed, but if there is a chance that they could save their club and we can help in some small in that, I think we should.
My idea would be to offer £500 or £1000.

I've been a fan of Darby from the start. He went off the boil in the middle of autumn and it is a credit to him that he has fought his way back in.
He's never going to be as dangerous going forward as Wiseman but he brings some very impressive attributes to the game.
For me his positioning for aerial balls is almost perfect each time. For a short guy he gets up well and judges the flight of the ball perfectly. From where I stand in the Sandy he's often right in front of me and he reads the game very well.
When he does make a mistake or gets caught out he puts the effort in to get back and recover.
I think MoM could have gone to about 5 or 6 players on Saturday. I really like the look of the back 4 from Saturday. |

In no way am I being pessimistic, but it depends what league we're in.
Rather than predict what I think will happen, here's my take on who I would want us to keep out of the players whose contracts expire in the summer:
Widdowson - bags of potential for me, particularly going forward.
Holden - even if he drops to the bench if we bring someone else in I think he'd be an asset. Lots of experience and plays with 100% commitment.
JLAA - he's done enough to earn a new contract and is a decent utility player.
Thompson - disrupted season so far, clearly his face didn't fit with Eyre/Bunn. Given how he finished last season he was looking like he might actual unleash some of that potential we always hear about.
Lucas - good back-up and I think the club want him to take on more coaching.
Players to leave:
Hackney - if he doesn't play until the back end of the season he'll be fighting to be kept on.
David - never seen him but not sure we have the time and resource to invest in this gamble.
Edwards - clearly not a long term potential number 1. Tries hard when he gets a chance though.
BBM - I'm a massive fan of his but the legs are going. |

What happens with Harry Bunn, David Ball and Benali? They're all here because of Eyre and with Harry being Frankie's son I can't see him wanting to stay.
Not sure if City will want Benali training with Dale rather than the City squads now Eyre isn't here.
Ball is only here because of Eyre as well.
