Thread | Four big games last night

And I can't find attendance figures for any of them. Not even on the Beeb (mind you, they are becoming ever less efficient with much of their on-line stuff).
Or am I just looking in the wrong places ?????? |

Bought by Man City as the final piece to confirm their dominance this season.
To any Rs fan sentient and sober in 1972, what has followed the signing of Sanchez might produce some feelings of deja vu.

On 5th April 1997, the Rs were due at Burnden Park, Bolton, an historic ground to which I'd never been and which, since Bolton were moving to a new home at the end of the season, I would never get another chance to visit with QPR, so off I went with my young niece acting as navigator.
It rained. All day. We hardy few (and it was just a few) were stuck on an open terrace (or half an open terrace since part had already been sold off) and watched another poor performance from our lot.
There was, however, one bright spot, a fantastic goal from new signing Steve Morrow (Morrow had been released by Arsenal as soon as new manager Wenger had had time to look at his squad --- clue there). A long-range thunderbolt of a goal. Unfortunately. in the rest of the games he played for us (another 90 ) he never repeated that, being responsible for far more goals from opponents than he ever was for goals for us.
Bolton went on to win that game 2-1 and, importantly for them, it either clinched the title or promotion (can't remember which) and they celebrated accordingly. For the most part their fans were't even insulting, just dismissive, because we, to them, no longer mattered and, on that day being ignored (apart from the odd "We won't be seeing you again for a while") hurt more than any insult. The drive home seemed a long one (especially with only a sad young girl for company) --- and it rained all the way.
Now Bolton aren't one of our local (or even London) rivals or narrwich or Luton or MK or Swindon (all personal choices) but if our win today contributes to Bolton ending in a relegation place, I will not let myself crow about it, but will just be contentedly disdainful. There was a time when Refs were advised to take a moment to consider before pulling out cards. Sensible. But, IMO, players have now learned that if they play dead (or severely injured --- no rolling about etc because perceived wisdom is that seriously hurt players don't writhe much), Refs will take the consideration time to think about whether the player is badly hurt (and they then use it to decide, consciously or subconsciously, about how "bad" the foul was) and then they decide on a card.
Not all Refs --- but, going back over incidents, it becomes obvious with many. They might (probably would) say they keep an eye on the fouled player because they are concerned for them --- but, at least at Pro leve, that's the business of the physios, not the officials, who should be considering other things.
When you're watching the weekend highlights, examples will be there --- I'd be interested to see what others think about it. |

Leroy Fer.
Burnley's first goal today was important but from the moment they started moving down their left, Fer was the key man. He left his position then got caught ball watching then moved the wrong way as the ball was moved into where he should have been (where the cross that led to the goal came from) and then seemed to stop caring.
If Swansea keep picking him he could well be on to complete his hat-trick of relegations --- and yet some people (on the back of a few decent goals?) still say what a good player he is. Including one friend of mine (no names --- yet) at whom this minor rant is particularly aimed.
But there must be others who have made careers out of somehow fooling managers and public? Suggestions? I could think of a couple of our past players who might fit the bill.

LR ---------------- 112 X 72 yards. (8064 sq yards)
City Ground --- 115 X 78 yards. (8970 sq yards)
So who will tell me that extra 906 sq yards don't make a difference?
Until an Rs manager takes a team to Nottingham fully prepared to deal with all that extra space (which, yet again, Forest used well) we will never win there. What works at LR just damages us on that pitch (and the better it works at LR the more we suffer up there).
On the flip side, Forest have managed only one league win at our place since 1998 (I think?). A few draws (but then the smaller pitch makes defending and playing for point easier).
Next season why bother --- just send the development team out and tell them to chase everything. |
