Last nights ref 11:37 - Oct 24 with 1379 viewsdingdangblue

Possibly made the 3 most bizarre freekick decisions Ive ever seen at Spotland! The 1st in the first half when Grimes got up to head the ball in the area and the defender bent down under him knocking him off balance - very dangerous this, as in the past there's been nasty neck/collarbone/shoulder injuries caused by this type of 'non challenge'. Amazingly the ref penalised Grimes? The 2nd was Tutte, I think? When he put his head in on the run and the defender nearly kicked him in the face ? Freekick to Oxford? The last one was when Ryan Edwards leapt in to head the ball away - putting himself in danger of injury - but nevertheless a strong brave challenge. Oxford freekick on the edge of our box! Very bizarre!

Cannot think of any explanation for the second one. It was high feet by their player and no other contact made.

Funny how you see things differently.

I thought Grimes had fouled their lad and was looking for the penalty.

The Tutte incident - Tutte punched the ball away, hence the free kick, in my opinion.

Can't recall the Edwards incident.

I think the 2nd incident and the tutte handball are separate incidents. I think that incident was McIntyre

At the time of the Tutte one, the only thing I thought he couldve done was nicked the ball away with his hand - but usually the ref indicates a handball by waving an arm so thought it couldnt be that. The edwards one was a diving header where he jumped into the challenge headfirst and obviously got penalised for 'jumping aggressively'. It was followed by 'you dont know what your doing' chant from pearl st stand.

Was the Tutte one given by the liner, who Tutte berated for an absolute age afterwards?

If so, he definitely knocked the ball deliberately with his hand.

I didnt see the lino give anything - it just looked like it was a high foot by the oxford player if anything. Tutte was running towards the corner after 'heading' it on.

Was there another incident involving Tutte, as it was McIntyre pulled up for that odd one, as Col said?

The most shocking thing I saw from last nights ref was an incident in the second half at the Sandy Lane end. The ref had just missed a blatant push on Grant in the build-up to an attack from Dale. The play resulted in a corner and, because of the sparce attendance, it was pretty quiet apart from a Dale fan explaining that the ref should use his assistant if he has probelms with his eyes. The Dale fan added a few choice words but nothing outrageous, to which the ref looked into the crowd and replied,"nice language that is, really nice language."

I think this is the first time I have ever seen or heard a ref actually respond to a crowd. I thought it was hugely unprofessional given that a) there was a crowded penalty box with players grabbing chunks of each other before a corner came in which he should have been concentrating on and b) it gave the impression that the crowd had got to the ref!

The lack of consistency of the refs we've had at home this year has been the most frustrating point for me. 50/50s are fair enough but when the refs have different policies towards contesting headers, for example, each week it must be a nightmare for the players to know what they can and cannot do.

McIntyre appeared, from the TDS Stand, to go for the ball with his head. Despite the Oxford player's foot being very high, they were given a free-kick, which now appears to have been for handball by McIntyre instead of some other odd reason.

I remember all 3 incidents. The second was Mc Intyre and it happened right in front of me . Mc Intyre knocked the ball forward with his HEAD and the defender had his feet up around shoulder height. It was NOT handball x Mc Intyre. The worst was the tackle on Rafferty in 1st half when their no.17 slid in with studs showing and into chest of Rafferty. It reminded me of when Curran got sent off. You could go on all day about the ref he was POOR just like the rest of them.

Why did their player not get booked for the deliberate handball in the first half?

From my view in the TDS it was a stonewall penalty.
Grimes leapt like a salmon and their defender backed into him whilst he was in the air, sending grimes clattering into the ground.
For him to then blow for a free kick against Grimes bemused the whole stand.
There's bad refs, then there's Trevor Kettle.

PS did anyone notice Grimes' reaction to this incident?
If that happened last season he would have had a strop on the spot, but yesterday he just got up and got in with it, having a quiet word with the ref on the way past!
Got to say I've been impressed with his attitude this season!

The tackle by Rafferty was a 50/50 and to be honest their lad went to ground first so a pretty brave/silly challenge by Rafferty as he was always going to get caught with studs, perfectly fine for both players who in my eyes from about 10 yards away where both entitled to challenge for the ball. Agree though the ref at best could be described as terrible, some of his decisions where laughable they were so wrong

Unfortunately, in the second half, the ref had to call him and Cavanagh over when Grimes had obviously said something out of turn about a decision.

You're right when comparing it to last season, however, but the slight lapses of petulance are still there.

The 2nd one in particular was just bizarre. There wasn't even a hint of a hand ball and I was flabbergasted the Oxford player wasn't penalised for the high foot.

I noticed an incident where JK stooped to about waist height to head a ball and their player went to kick it (the ball not his head) and he got the feet-high decision. I never quite get this; seems unfair to the player trying to kick the ball if put your head so low down.

The worm of time turns not for the cuckoo of circumstance.

Again, I watched Grimes rant and rant at the ref after not getting the decision. Grimes appeared to me to have got leverage off the Oxford player illegally, because he really is shit and cowardly in the air. The Oxford player was fouled, in my opinion.
