Players contracted beyond the end of this season 10:16 - Jan 6 with 1617 viewsleedsdale

Its a slow morning at work so ive done a bit of digging. As far as I can make out, the players who are contracted to play for us next season are:

Neill Byrne
Stephen Jordan
Marcus Holness
Mark Twaddle
Gary Jones
Jason Kennedy
Nicky Adams
Andrew Tutte
Ashley Grimes

The players out of contract in the summer are:

David Lucas
Matty Edwards
Joe Widdowson
Dean Holden
Simon Hackney
Kuagica David
Brian Barry-Murphy
Joe Thompson
Jean Louis Akpa-Akpro

What with all the loanees going back to their respective clubs there will definitely be some room for manoeuvre for whoever is in charge in the summer. Its maybe a little early to start speculating who will be retained/released, but sod it i'll have a go anyway. I reckon Edwards, Barry-Murphy, Akpa-Akpro, Hackney and David will be released.

I'd be surprised if Jean-Louis was released. As for the others, I wouldn't disagree.

I dont think he should be either, but there is normally at least one player released which comes as a bit of a surprise.

There is still plenty of time for fortunes to change, if I was to do the list again in a few weeks time it could look completely different!

In no way am I being pessimistic, but it depends what league we're in.

Rather than predict what I think will happen, here's my take on who I would want us to keep out of the players whose contracts expire in the summer:

Widdowson - bags of potential for me, particularly going forward.
Holden - even if he drops to the bench if we bring someone else in I think he'd be an asset. Lots of experience and plays with 100% commitment.
JLAA - he's done enough to earn a new contract and is a decent utility player.
Thompson - disrupted season so far, clearly his face didn't fit with Eyre/Bunn. Given how he finished last season he was looking like he might actual unleash some of that potential we always hear about.
Lucas - good back-up and I think the club want him to take on more coaching.

Players to leave:

Hackney - if he doesn't play until the back end of the season he'll be fighting to be kept on.
David - never seen him but not sure we have the time and resource to invest in this gamble.
Edwards - clearly not a long term potential number 1. Tries hard when he gets a chance though.
BBM - I'm a massive fan of his but the legs are going.

I think Lucas could be as well. Keane hardly came on under his coaching, his injuries/absences continue.

Suspect other clubs will be interested in Widdowson and while we get a fee if he moved and stayed in England it would not surprise me if his agent suggested he moved to Scotland for a year (as McCardle did) to get round this.

I guess looking at this if we are relegated and have to cut costs as we get less money from TV etc. then we are not currently stuck with a lot of players on big money. The players under contract (possibly not Twaddle but having only seen him for one game it is difficult to tell) and Widdowson would form the basis of a decent team for League 2 and would continue to formthe back-bone of a side on our budget for League 1.

out of that list i think Beech should be getting the board to offer new deals to Widdowson, Holden, Akpro..

I would let lucas go and go for another GK coach surely Beech & Kidd know of somebody..
I would aslo be looking to see if Dale can take Ducurz all next season and Bogdanovich aswell..
Build on that..

My all time favourite Dale player Mr Lyndon Symmonds

Hopefully Barnsley don't need a left-back anytime soon.

I can honestly see JLAA being released. He was probably signed on a fairly low wage with him coming from Grimsby who were relegated to the conference. I think this time round he will believe he is worth more that he actually is.

At best he is an occasional impact player who you would have on the bench. Ideally you would not want him starting. He works hard and at times he can do some amazing things, but most of the time his decision making lets him down. This is an area in which I have seen very little progress in his time at Dale.

Regarding the other out of contract players I would let all of them go, apart from Widdowson, who is developing into an excellent player.

BBM and JT may be great blokes, but are not worth a new contract. BBM will be on a decent wage for a back up and JT has not kicked on. I suspect he will go to Barnsley.

He's a starter for me. As a winger, not up front. Right now I can't think of anyone (bar Adams) who could play better as a winger.

I can't believe people are saying JLAA should be released. Before the signing of Bogdan he was the only player for us who could actually win a header (on that note I don't think I've seen many better at Dale in terms of timing of jump). I think he's been one of our best players this season and has the pace and strength to cause defences real problems. Someone cited the fact that he's probably on a relatively low wage as a possible reason for his departure which is pretty ridiculous if you think about it. We want to be spending a little as possible on wages, if we were to release him and bring someone in of his calibre, I'm sure we'd be looking to spend almost 1.5 maybe even 2 times the wage he's on at the moment. At the very worst, he's a fantastic player to have as back-up.

The modern pioneer of mealy mouthed bollocks.

You have missed the point. I said he is probably on a relatively low wage currently but will want a bit more to re-sign, therefore he may be released. Let's say he is on £800 a week at the moment, is he worth £1,500? For me no. The same with BBM is he worth £1,500 a week? Managing a wage budget at this level must be difficult. An extra few hundred quid a week on a fringe players budget and that money cannot go towards a target man, dominant centre half, goalkeeper etc.

Under Hill he hardly played and he was often reluctant to use him more than an 20 minute impact player, which tells me something. This season he has been forced into a more prominent role. He has worked hard but the basics often let him down.

If he is happy to stay on a relatively low wage and be a bit part player then re-sign him, but I have a feeling that he will want more money than he is worth.

Regarding Shun's wingers comment. For most of the season we have only had him and Adams fit as recognised wide players. This is due to injuries and lack of depth in this position. So by default he has been the second best wide player!

I suppose this is why football is such an interesting game. It is all down to opinions! I hope I watch him bang a hat trick in an emphatic victory at Hartlepool later today.

He's definitely flawed, but of all the players whose contracts expire at the end of the season, I'd make a new deal for Akpro a priority along with Widdowson. He's adaptable, unpredictable and provides an element of flair which is lacking elsewhere in the squad. There's a lot of variables at play upto and during the transfer window, despite that he would be a strong squad player to have in either League 1 or League 2. Good value for money if you ask me.

Agreed, Widdowson is a huge player for us. Adds another option to the team when going forward and he's steady at the back

Thankgod Kennedy is contracted, player of the season for me so far, cracking player.

I would like to see us keep Edwards but feel he may want to move on to further his development, must be hard for him to sit on the bench so often, as far as I'm aware not made any big fuss about it either, fair play to him for that.
