Travel to Wales 09:25 - Jun 6 with 8827 views | legoman | I posted recently about visiting elderly parents in Swansea. Mrs L and I are wondering whether we could make a day visit from here in Bromley. We thought about driving down early, staying with parents for a few hours but in their garden, then driving back home. It would be a long day but we're not sure when things are going to change. We know the Welsh government rules ask people to stay local, but what do you folks think?

I can't travel 20 miles to Amroth beach or 7 miles to Llanstephan beach as it is blatantly obvious they are closed. I'm not saying you'd get stopped and fined, but if you did you'd be escorted out of here. I totally get the despair though of not seeing loved ones. [Post edited 6 Jun 2020 10:16]

As I said in your previous thread all care homes are closed anyway. The rules are clear in Wales that everybody needs to stay local and that isnt what you intend doing. Just as an example there 76 new cases in Wales yesterday. Over 40 were in North Wales and double figures in Cardiff. The last thing your parents need is for you to bring covid from elsewhere and infecting them or indeed anyone else. To put the record straight Wales has had 59, 67, 82, 35 and 76 new cases in each of the last 5 days. Swansea in that time has had 2, 0, 0, 1 and 2 new cases in that time.

The overall infection rate in Bromley is 387 infections per 100,000 people. In Swansea it’s 515 infections per 100,000. The problem would be made worse the other way round. Bringing it back here. But at the moment it’s not permitted to drive through Wales so it is what it is. But don’t pretend it’s anything other than politics. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Spot on. The Swansea numbers are fantastic to see. Numbers that give hope for the immediate future. Welk done everybody. Well done welsh government. Our reward will be more freedoms soon. Of course, Westminster have unlocked too soon and invited a second wave. This will damage the economy even more, and cost lives. I wish we had a capable uk government. Boris is a 🤡.

Why are the numbers lower in London than they are in Wales? Are the Welsh government in charge in London as well?

Lisa the removal of the lockdown has led to the R rate increasing in the South West and North West and this has occurred since lockdown has been removed. My so is currently in Cornwall and the beaches there were heaving last week. Whatever any one thinks of Drakeford and Co keeping the lockdown in place has led to the figures throughout Wales dropping. Todays figures show the new cases in Wales to be 42 of which 21 are in North Wales due to the spread from North West England. Of the 21 remaining cases 11 are in Cardiff and the Vale Health Board. The other Health Boards figures today were Aneurin Bevan 0 Swansea Bay 1 Hywel Dda 2 Powys 3 and Cwm Taf 4. 5 of the Health Board had fewer than 4 cases yesterday. Compare the figures with 10 May. The new cases were 223. Aneurin Bevan had 33 Swansea Bay 11 Hywel Dda 29 Powys 5 Cwm Taf 43 Cardiff and the Vale 26 and Betsi Cadwalladr 72. I think that pretty much sums up the improvement and the R is coming down. There is still a need to see Cardiff and North Wales come down but the evidence is clearly showing an improvement there as well. I realise you dont like the WAG as it isnt your favoured party but the evidence speaks for itself. In the last 5 days there has been 4 new cases in Swansea and 5 in Neath Port Talbot and what is needed is to keep people out until the virus elsewhere is under control.

Let's not kid ourselves here. It was only a few weeks ago you were praising the efforts made in London in bringing the r rate down to as low as 0.4, and rightly so. Thanks to this government, that figure stands at 0.95 within weeks of the easing of lock down, with the BBC reporting today it could be as high 1.2. You're heading for a second wave over there at breakneck speed.

I’m a supporter of the WG and it’s certainly a more favoured party for me than the lot in Westminster who I dislike with an absolute passion. But the notion that the WG are somehow doing a fantastic job is laughable. They’ve eased shielding (exactly the same as in England) yet don’t allow people to drive to see their families 10 miles away? Show me the science. They want everyone in built up areas to congregate close to their homes without allowing people to spread out more safely in the vast areas of Wales with no one there. Show me the science. Golf is fine and tennis is not. Show me the science. They’re still incapable of sorting out testing. The R rate is being misunderstood and is being seen as a be all and end all. If 100,000 people a day catch it and that drops to 80,000, the R rate is 0.8. If 40 people have it and the next day 44 people have it, the R rate is 1.1. In which situation would you feel safer?

The overall infection figures have dropped dramatically though. Which means that a few people catching it (a cluster, I think they’re calling them) is skewing the R rate. As an example, Hammersmith & Fulham, where I live, has had days of 1 or 0 infections. One day last week there was 3. That skews the R rate. Before lockdown, there were hundreds every day. The R rate in the UK is being affected as well by hospital and care home outbreaks. A care home, is, unfortunately a cluster environment. So the R rates are terrible when there is an outbreak. Community R rates are what really affects every day life and lockdown stuff. And it’s still low. Together with the massively lower infection rate In the community now. And there also seems to be a bit of a thing with it being less severe. Don’t get me wrong, I am still concerned, I still think the care home issue is a scandal that HAS to see heads roll, but I’m looking at four weeks since lockdown began to ease and we saw huge crowds on beaches and we aren’t seeing a spike in infections. The UK positive number today is the lowest since March. I think it’s possible we’ll get small spikes, but I’m not seeing signs of a second wave, just a few weeks of people predicting it. We can’t stay inside completely until we have a vaccine. It’s probably far safer to have a lot of younger people risk infection over the summer months to build up some immunity than to risk an autumn spike that coincides with flu season. But none of us know. We can only hope and keep ourselves safe according to age and other circumstances.
Travel to Wales on 17:03 - Jun 6 with 4182 views | legoman | Thanks for the responses all. Just to be absolutely clear, no-one in the Lego family intends flouting the rules either here in London or in Wales, not least because L junior is a virologist and so we probably have more info about this thing than many. We will not travel until it is allowed and safe to do so, and I guess the responses I was hoping for would have contained some info about when folk think Wales might be in a position to allow cross border travel again. Apologies if I didn't clarify that point. We have taken a quick gander at the Welsh rules but couldn't immediately find what we were looking for. We are fortunate that none of us in the Lego household has a need to use public transport to get to London for work, as I think that is a big risk, along with going to pubs bars and restaurants. It will be a long time before any of us relax our current behaviours regardless of the rules. But I do think we need to keep things in proportion. Whilst social distancing should be observed and encouraged, remember that you need to be in close proximity with someone outside your household for more than 15 minutes. The chances of you catching Covid from merely passing someone on a country walk or from a cyclist shooting past is very very low. Keeping decent levels of personal hygiene is a mantra we should follow at all times, not just during a pandemic. Don't have nightmares!

Travel to Wales on 19:12 - Jun 6 with 4116 views | exhmrc1 | I think you are missing the point. The so called 5 mile rule is not a strict rule. When Drakeford introduced it he clearly stated it was a guide. People had asked what they deemed local and 5 miles was a guide and as he said the public needed to make their own sensible decision. He also went on to say it was likely to be further in rural areas. The point is that if you are to stay local people will make their own decision on distance and if you said say 10 miles then some will extend it further. The purpose is to keep people local to prevent the spread. The fact it is working. Today 5 health boards covering most of South and Mid Wales showed between 4 and none new cases. There still has been more cases around Cardiff and North Wales and the policy is to avoid the spread from those areas into others as well as spreading from England here. All areas are having less new cases but Cardiff, RCT and North Wales have taken longer to get there than the south ad Mid Wales.

People are allowed to travel to Cardiff for work. They are not allowed to travel from Swansea to Carmarthen to see family in a socially responsible way. There is no justification for it. It is a complete nonsense. You can still stop people going to public places if that’s what you want but putting distance on seeing people is unnecessarily cruel and smacks of a small minded attitude where everyone lives within a few doors of each other. How many lives is it costing?
