Here's something I'm sure will make everyone smile 11:24 - Sep 7 with 7730 views | JackoBoostardo | Given the current economical climate where for years people have been forced to cut hours, take pay cuts or freezes or even lose their jobs... you can always trust these guys to make things better! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-29098334 Well above inflation too! Nice for some!

Here's something I'm sure will make everyone smile on 11:32 - Sep 7 with 5941 views | union_jack | For balance, they are probably not paid in line with their responsibility level. £67k pa is not huge these days and many middle managers in industry are paid more. Of course, they won't be getting a sympathy vote from anyone anytime soon!!

I agree, most of them could make much more than that outside of Parliament. But they would of course be mental to accept a 9% pay rise at a time when everyone else is getting zip. The symbolism would be awful.

Some of the managers of Tesco's larger stores are on significantly more than that. Whether they are classed as "middle management" is another matter.

Of course the directorships and advisory roles most have with big business paying them 1000's for a few hours advise a month doesn't help their already swelling bank balances.
| The hair and the beard have gone I am now conforming to society, tis a sad day

But that's not the point though Paul. We are talking remuneration for the job if MP and in comparison to some private sector jobs of arguably far less responsibility, the job is underpaid IMO.

A GP has a far more responsible job than an MP, as does a firefighter, paramedic.................

Increase their wages and ban all secondary activities.

Here's something I'm sure will make everyone smile on 12:11 - Sep 7 with 5846 views | exiledclaseboy | Of course, they still have their generous expenses and over 100 of them are government ministers, who all pick up a ministerial salary on top of the MP one. Cabinet ministers get about £140k per year. But there are senior civil servants earning far more.

Here's something I'm sure will make everyone smile on 12:11 - Sep 7 with 5841 views | perchrockjack | Doctors /dentists get paid to run their business. MPS should get more and claim business expenses as per HMRC like the rest of us/you. Business expenses being only the cost of doing their job

Now if you said hospital specialist, I may agree!! This is obviously a contentious issue, but individually a GP may not be as valuable as an MP. You would need to seek the advice of a job evaluation specialist but I would argue that the MP has more responsibility. A tough one though. That said, many GPs are earning well in excess of £67k.

I wouldn't say that a backbench MP has a more responsible job than a GP. Ministers, maybe.

Only where there is a conflict if interest ( which is presumably the case anyway). So long as they can fit it in I don't think it ethical to restrict their employment activity.

It's all about opinions and yes the subject of earnings and salaries is always going to be a "spicy" issue. We will always get comparisons between who works harder and deserves more due to workloads and responsibilities. Good debate so far.

Here's something I'm sure will make everyone smile on 12:40 - Sep 7 with 5798 views | Shaky | Quadrupling MPs' salaries would be a small price to pay if it meant they would become less inclined towards accepting consultancy payments and lobbying fees, which undoubtedly subvert the democratic process. Indeed cynics might suspect that the powers that be use the popular press to whip up anti MP sentiment to keep them hungry and susceptible. [Post edited 7 Sep 2014 12:44]
