The pure statistic of 6 home and 3 away games for us gives us a chance.

If we can produce 9 halves of football at home like today's second half we have a great chance of staying up.

The three away games are free hits; any points at bury, Peterborough or Oxford are going to be a bonus.

As posted:
We will need 52 points I think. Getting to 43 with 5 games remaining would have been a personal preference before the Walsall game.

At that stage we had 26 points with 16 games left. 12 points from 7 games since then, so 5 from the next 4 required. Anything else is a bonus.

I also think Oxford will be OK with all those home games & probably Walsall (although it would be good for Portsmouth to beat them tomorrow). I would imagine at least 1 other team will have a decent run. Northampton & MK Dons definitely have tough run ins so as long as we can put a decent run together it is on of Oldham or Wimbledon who we need to slip up ( Oldham play us and Wimbledon away - Huge games)

JFH will do well to hang onto his job at Northampton at this rate.

Our superior goal difference to all our rivals is the equivalent of an extra point

3-1 instead of 2-1 today helps

We'll probably need to catch either MK Dons or Wimbledon, both on 42 pts from 39 games with goal differences of -13

If they continue to average 1.077 pts per game, over 46 games that's 49.5 pts

On that (highly provisional) basis, 50 pts would be enough

Mk Dons next 2 games are massive for us : Blackburn h and Wigan a - we couldn't have asked for more at this stage.

Season after season the final points total for safety has been 50. Even if its 51 this season we would need four wins and a draw from 9 games.

It IS all highly provisional, but the recent form of MKD - 11 points from their last six matches - suggests they will avoid the bottom four.

From their last six matches, Northampton and Walsall have each managed 3 points, and Wimbledon 5. Their fans' bottoms must be getting squeaky.

On the other hand, Dale's form isn't bad (in the context of a relegation dog-fight), with 9 points from the last six games (won 2, drawn 3, lost 1). An average of 1.5 points per game for the remaining nine should be - just - enough to avoid the drop. The trouble is that this season Dale have been more than usually unpredictable.

Any indication of the odds from the bookies on which clubs will go down? They are more often right than wrong (as today when the odds on a Dale win were shorter than those for a Shrews win).

Agree with their bottom 3. Would also put Oldham into the coin toss too ( not sure how you do it with 3 teams)

A small margin in favour of Dale ending up in the fourth relegation place, and Wimbledon just dodging it?

With a few minutes to go, Walsall's awful run could continue as Pompey lead 1-0.

Great result. 6 defeats in last 7 games for Walsall now.

Portsmouth took over 1400 there today, so another big away following should be present on Saturday - with even more if they beat Wigan on Monday. And they won't be playing for a draw as the race for 5th and 6th is very close.

Also worth noting again what a massive say we'll have in the play-off places, with games against 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th.

It’s in our hands which is the best we can hope for at this stage....4 points from the next 3 games would be a decent return .
Bar Mk Dons fixtures plenty of head to heads amongst the bottom 7.

Northampton looking in serious trouble now. Oxford definitely involved, Blackpool to be added on Saturday should they lose again.
