Lotto News on 14:36 - May 22 by Statzdale | I’m disgusted as I was sacked by social media. As a Goldbond Agent doing two rounds since 2004 and not missing a week until the suspension I feel royally shafted. I don’t attend matches so it was my way of supporting the club and loved doing it so a ST would be of no use at all to me, plus why would you patronise the place who have just sacked you. But when they encouraged everyone to go onto DD I suspected that this would happen but hoped it wouldn’t. I was looking forward to recommencing my walks alas not anymore. Unfortunately yes TVOS as I now have trouble standing on a gate for 4 hours. Only worked the Accrington game and my legs were bad for about 3 days afterwards. I was binned as a senior after the Spurs game [Post edited 22 May 2020 15:15]

Lotto News on 10:58 - May 22 by judd | Huge cost? Not sure how many agents there are, sorry, were. If a basic round had 50 customers paying £0.50 per week, after 15% commission and allow £170 discount for the season ticket, the net takings for the club is £935.00 before prizes and full time staff costs. Assume 100 agents, this would generate £93,500 gross. Assume these agents now all pay the full £200 ST price = £20,000. How many members should we assume will transfer to SO/DD, knowing that less than 50 have done so since the new Lotto was introduced? The new Lotto pays out 20% of takings to a charity of the club's choice. They also have the "Lotto partner" as referenced in the minutes of the Trust meeting of November 2019, who I believe to be a company called Place Enterprise. Do they work for free, or do they take a cut of the aforementioned 20%? |
Looking at the accounts judd, there is a line in the detailed version for "Sales" which was £110k in the year to May 2019 which gives credence to your £93.5k figure. Regardless, the logic of removing a non-playing revenue stream at the time of pandemic is questionable in the extreme. Other options could have included: 1. Pause the lottery until the pandemic is over 2. Keep it and try to promote it There would clearly be a staff cost of employees to take from this £110k which may make it less lucrative, but at a time of furlough and assuming no topping up of salaries the staff are of no cost to the club. I would love to hear a detailed logic from Tony Pockney who very recently (at the forum) said all sources of income were gratefully received. It appears we never needed this one or the very many people who worked very hard since the 1990's for its success.

The bit about sources of income is interesting, because the opportunity to make money from selling off stock in the shop would bring some in, especially if you look at the big sales other clubs have. Realise there is a staffing requirement around this, so would be interested to hear from those with more insight as to why this source of income can’t be managed with relative efficiency.

My assumptions were rudimentary. In the minutes of the Trust meeting of Novemeber 2019 it appears that the club informed the trust there were about 5,500 Goldbond members and 1,208 new sign ups for the lotto. 5,500 x £0.50 per week x 52 weeks less 15% = £121,500. This also assumes no goldbond on standing order/DD with commission payable on all takings. Assumes no arrears or pre payments [Post edited 22 May 2020 20:48]

As regards the Shop having a sale, in all honesty Dave in the club shop has been trying, kits & training stuff was hugely reduced and also other items listed on e bay. If it was laid out on tables at a match day outside it would probably mostly be gone now on impulsive purchases but sadly due to the lockdown people are watching money due to furlough / uncertainty and the shop has to close. I know a few agents, committed & friendly and it’s not an easy job touting for customers. Slightly different since the price went up but in the days when a pound meant something, would people gamble to maybe win a small prize or a couple of match tickets (I know prizes have changed) or put it on the National Lottery? I’m sure in addition to the Season Ticket, there was some discount in the shop & an agents annual do as well. Whilst not a salaried role, all these people out of work, it will be the turnstile staff next...

Lotto News on 11:54 - May 21 by Reedy | Very shocked to learn about this on here. The club say in the article that the agents have been written to, I’ve not received anything (this may just be me though) My main point is that this will be the death of the lottery for the club, the club have pushed incredibly hard over the last couple of years to get people to go to direct debit, and it hasn’t worked, 99% of my members only pay me because I’ve don’t it for so long and the same 99% will have no interest in doing direct debit. This has been said time and again by myself and other agents. There is no way the lottery will break even never mind make a profit anymore. It wouldn’t surprise me if when all this is over, the club realise they’ve made a balls up and ask to do the doorstep collections once again. Unfortunately by then it will be too late, and a lot of the paying members won’t be interested anymore. Very saddened to learn that after 12 years (I know some have done much longer) that we weren’t even informed. |
Not letter from the club as yet Reedy, being sacked by reading it on here. I have done it for 16 years and the way we have been treated is shameful. Yes us agents were loyal and loyalty is supposed to work both ways. I totally agree about the uptake on DD as I lost nobody since it was introduced, and I think it will go down like a lead balloon. All this over 15p which tbh it all boils down too our 15p per £ commission. My customers were very supportive of me and I would like to think they would return, hopefully one day I will have to test that theory. Can the trust not act on our behalf?? I’ve also not received anything from the club, and the earliest I will now is Tuesday, 5 days after the article on the website. As you say it’s all down to 15p in the £1. Myself and family members certainly won’t be taking up the new offer as a point of principal, and it pains me to say this, but I hope others don’t either. I know many of my members will be forgotten about and this time next year when (hopefully) this crisis has reached its conclusion, the board will sit round a table an say “why is the lottery barely breaking even” well it’s because this ridiculous decision was taken. I would say to all agents who read this, it should be up to you and your members if you want to carry on collecting from them on a weekly basis, if your not comfortable after this pandemic, then that is entirely reasonable, but to not have the option is frankly shocking. If the idea was to alienate the clubs loyalist of supporters, then they couldn’t have done a better job.

I've received nothing, neither. I will be visiting all my customers this week with a copy of the website article just to make sure they have contact from the club. I should imagine I will be capable of social distancing as I explain why the club thinks so little of us and them. These customers have been besieged with requests to switch to DD and they have steadfastly refused to budge. I suppose the shoddy removal of the collector will now see them fill in mandates in their droves. Hiding behind the pandemic is a pathetic act of cowardice by the instigator in all this. Someone mentioned the Trust earlier. Just 6 months ago the Trust issued lengthy and detailed minutes of a meeting with the club about the lottery. I am baffled by the silence of the Trust on this issue, not even an acknowledgement of the decision and that they intend/do not intend to respond.

The few supporters who go out in all weathers to collect money from their members. We don’t do it for the money or the discontinued season ticket (as nice as these are) we do it out of love of the club.
