Well, these music threads are much less depressing than the QPR ones at the moments so here is a link to an interesting article from the BBC site. A few surprises there but more importantly what is your best cover version.

For me it is Respect by Adeva

The Mondays cover of Congos 'Tokoloshe Man' should also be on the list, I think its better than Step On.

I love Steve Hillages version of the Beatles 'Its All Too much' is better than the original.

But for albums, look up Nouvelle Vague who have released about 3 albums with nothing but covers by bands like Joy Division , Josef K ,Wire ,XTC, Echo & the Bunnymen, BuzZcocks, the Smiths, Psychedelic Furs,Depeche Mode, the Clash, the Undertones,Fun Boy Three,A Certain Ratio,New Order,U2,Orchestral Manouvres In The Dark,Dead Kennedys,Siouxsie & The Banshees,Dexys, the Saints and a killer version of the Stranglers 'Get A Grip On Yourself'.

I don't know many cover albums, but I listen to this often:

Kermit and Fozzy win it. Easily.

Much better than the original, imo but then I did hear the cover first and a million times before I actually heard the original. No way back after that.

Good shout Fred. I used to love The Beat. Mirror in The Bathroom was my favourite from them.

I thought of this while ironing my shirt this morning:

Then, when you started to go Two Tone my thoughts went here:

Then here:

Great treatment by amy and Ronson, and for some reason I find the video highly watchable.

And when we're on reggae:

In 2001 during a marvellous holiday in Mallorca this was on heavy rotation on MTV.

I liked it so much I bought the album.

Jealous Guy has a strange history. Was originally called 'Child of Nature' and was written in India for the White Album, for which far too many songs were written as discussed on another thread. Lennon and McCartney wrote similar songs and Macca's won so 'Mother Nature's Son' made the album and Child of Nature didn't, but he reworked it and eventually it made it as Jealous Guy, but here's the original demo:

Well I never knew that... Probably teaching you to suck eggs but I thought he wrote the lyrics (for Jealous Guy) after a big bust up with Yoko Ono... Glad he did!
Roxy's version was recorded and released after Lennon was killed...It made No1 in the UK charts.

Have you read 'Revolution in the Head'? It's a great book to dip into when you're sitting on the bog waiting for something to happen.

My favourite Nouvelle Vague cover is their Bossa Nova-flavoured version of Tuxedomoon's 'In a Manner of Speaking':

Love this one because it brought a relatively obscure but excellent band to a larger new world market, and because it kicks ass

Top pick, nice one! Budgie: What a band! Burke Shelley has been very ill lately and the band is "on hiatus".

Somebody on the BBC was wondering what abomination the next X Factor winner will torture us with. He described Alexandra Burke's rendition of Hallelujah (covered by many) as a nail down a blackboard. Frankly, I didn't think it was as good as that.
