Heads of the Valley road upgrade is finally coming to an end after 23 years and £2 Billion spent.

Known locally as "The Road to Hell" it kind of sums up Devolution to Wales

You give it out, you take it back it`s all part of the game

30 years too late imo , all heavy industry gone which hasn't been any where near replaced . I wonder what the speed limit will be on it,if it's the same as phase 1 then little point in all that money being spent.

Yes 30 years plus late, some would say better late than never but it should have been built/upgraded pre devolution.

Continually being banned by Planet Swans for Porthcawl and then being reinstated.

Yes its too late, but its still important so that future businesses can compete and grow.
Part European funded of course, or would still not have happened..

Perhaps Tata would have stayed in Port Talbot rather than invest 4 billion in Somerset where Mogg used to be an MP. Creating 4,000 jobs, plus supply jobs.

About choices politics isn’t it ? (Englands choices mostly, of course).

Tata might have thought differently if the M4 relief road had gone ahead, but Drakeford felt it would disturb the newts and tadpoles.

No wonder big firms prefer to stay on the English side of the bridge

As has been said it is too late.

What I will say after driving the full length of the road a month or so ago was that it’s a huge piece of engineering, tbh I was shocked at the number of new bridges, slip roads, roundabouts etc, it’s a huge job.the fact they were upgrading the road instead of building a completely new one didn’t help the time lines as did some of nature of some of the engineering works near Abergavenny. I’m not sure if the 23 years is an over run of epic proportions or an overrun in conjunction with a phased approach, but whatever it is we should have had it before now challenges or not.

One of the biggest and most difficult engineering feats ever carried out in the UK.
Well done.

The Romans built longer roads in more difficult conditions some of which are still in use today ( well I think part of the Via Appia is anyway) and will this road still be there in 2000 years?

Anything government organised in this country (UK or devolved) is doomed to be badly designed, badly implemented and quite possibly already out of date when it's finished.

What I can't understand is the Brynglas bypass wasn't built because it would affect the wildlife. Is there no wildlife in the area of the new 30 mile stretch of road.

There's none on it so far, hopefully that'll remain the case, until a few decide to use it as an F1 track then they'll be flying up.

Neither does this road ,in fact it doesn't go through any town . Great bit of engineering works though but when you see what other countries have achieved in a much shorter time it does make you think.

There was plenty of bat runs built during phase 1 and the creation of new habitats for great crested newts, dormice, lapwing and bats. The presence of bats has stopped many an engineering project HS2 being one .

Why wasn't this done for the Brynglas Tunnel bypass to go ahead.

3 section are currently 70mph but the last section finished, Clydach gorge has a 50mph limit. A big money earner for the Welsh government as all vehicles have to brake from 70mph to 50mph as they approach it. No reason a modern dual carriageways should have a lower speed limit than the single carriageway it replaced.

My understanding is that the negative environmental impact couldn't have been justified for the tunnels being bypassed, the Gwent levels is in parts a designated SSSI site ,is home to hundreds of wading birds, bitterns and marsh harriers ,the only home in Wales of the great silver water beetle. All this and much more then you could could see why some would react but wading birds for example , despite petitions and protests didn't stop the flooding of the mudflats in cardiff to form Cardiff "bay".
Now planning permission for a solar farm is being held up due to protests from Gwent Wildlife Trust ( the same who won the battle of the by pass) partially to be built over the same land .
I'm sure a lot of issues could be engineered out if the will to do so existed, this to suit all parties.
