If Starmer gets in will non Labour voters (last election) vote for him ? on 09:41 - Mar 31 by Catullus
I'm not sure about 4 and 5.
4, Whichever way you word it that is a crack down on welfare and there would be a BIg debate around that, a Labour leader advocating a welfare cut.
5, Do we need more roads or do we need to get cars off the road? If Corona has proved anything, its proved that a large chunk of the workforce can work from home. I was speaking with an HMRC bod in the Chemists queue Saturday afternoon, he said it turned out he can comfortably work from home, it saves him time and money AND he'd be there when the kids get home from school (when things get back to normal) which is surely better?
To a certain extent employers will always prefer having their staff in an office where they can keep an eye on them/be available for the public and visitors, but you're right. There's shitloads of people who have lugged into an office every morning who don't really need to.
If employers can see that the volume of work hasn't changed and that they can save money by not having to spend as much on premises then a lot of temporary home workers may become permanent ones.
Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

I know a shipwright who has been forced to work from home because of this virus and he said it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to him.
His sails have gone through the roof.
The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

I said I wouldn't but, Murdoch will wait to see which way the wind is blowing and choose his side carefully to guarantee he's friendly with the winner, he did it before.
Genuinely now, what if the EU collapses? None of us can know what the Pandemic will leave behind but the world will have changed. None of us can be sure of anything going forward.
If Starmer becomes leader he probably would want to stay away from the Europe issue as far as he possibly can. There’s millions of votes he needs to win back from the sort of traditional labour voters that defected to Farage and Boris over this issue. It would be difficult for him to win any sort of election without them.

Once the effects kick in Starmer will be in a very good position to take advantage.

I've met him a few times in meetings when he was in charge of the CPS, and seen him questioning government officials. He's a very impressive man and when we all return to normal, he will seriously hold the Gvnt to account.

Starmer strikes me as being an articulate, intelligent guy and I suspect he would have the edge of Boris at PMQs. He’s anti Brexit and pro EU which is slightly out of kilter with the “National mood” - I know some disagree and say pro EU parties got more votes etc, but the scores on the doors at the GE don’t reflect that. A Conservative Brexit Party romped home.
Labour have lost something like 4 elections on the bounce; it’s my belief that to win an election Labour need to move towards the middle ground and attract the floating voters in large numbers, staying out on the left will not do them any favours at all. If RBL is elected it is my belief they will remain in the political wilderness. I cannot understand the thinking in the Labour Party, surely having a moderate leader like Starmer and being in power (or very close to it) is better than having a hard left leader and being in the political wilderness, I just don't get it.
Some of the people in Labour’s higher echelons are deluded and in complete denial. I can remember seeing one of their MP’s being interviewed after they had just agreed to the GE in December, the MP was ecstatic and convinced they were going to beat Boris. I thought to myself she deluded and completely out of touch - she went on to lose her safe seat!!
I believe if Starmer adopts a populist agenda and Brexit doesn’t go well he is in with a good shout. Some policies which I think could prove to be popular and appeal to voters include:
1) Controls on Freedom of Movement / Immigration 2) Increased investment in the NHS 3) More incentive to work, for example Tax breaks for lower and middle income earners 4) Less incentive for people to be unemployed 5) Build more roads - electric cars etc 6) Better and cheaper public transport railways etc. 7) lower tuition fees.
Every country should have an effective opposition to ensure the government is held to account, otherwise you end up with a dictatorship or corrupt regime of which there are far too many.

That is pretty much (in part) the labour manifesto from the last GE.
...and his brexit fence sitting display did the damage.
Old JC has been saying the governments massiv spending has proved he was right which totally ignores that Bojo would not have done all this spending if not for Covid 19, it's not like he has a choice, the country would completely collapse if the government didn't borrow massively and basically give out free money so people can eat, pay bills etc.

I agree they could be alienate some of the party’s historic support, but if it’s played the right way it could be popular.
4) Doesn't have to be about cuts to welfare, it would be about providing decent proper training and educational opportunities to up-skill people who are unemployed to help them find work. People claiming unemployment benefit would be required to undertake voluntary work and put something back in to society in exchange for the benefit.
5) Totally agree that we need to encourage people to work from home and things like good broadband speeds will enable that to happen. Metropolitan and densely populate areas need better public transport links, but we also need a better road infrastructure for example around Swansea, Neath, Port Talbot and Newport to improve the economic prospects, places like West Wales, Cornwall have some very poor areas and need a boost. Lots of our freight is on the roads and there is no prospect of getting it back on the railway as there isn’t the capacity.

It should be a push to get people into work, saying get them off welfare gives fuel to those who will always argue it's an attack on the welfare state and therefore on the poorest.
The infrastructure desperately needs ugrading but I'd be more for reversing the Beeching cuts and reopening and upgrading rail links and services. Getting cars off the roads is the best way because it also frees up space and improves travel time for hauliers. As well as helping to improve the environment. We have seen the news recently, air quality has improved, the ozone layer is self repairing, Venice has clear water in its canals for the first time in years, these things should be long term aims.

That theory and opinion is surely discredited by the fact that he's chosen to be a member of the labour party.

That will only be a tiny and rather insignificant part of his job, given the massive majority the government has.
His main task will to be to inspire all those who have deserted labour over Corbyn, over brexit, and over their general sneeriness at working class scumbag types in council houses with white vans who are straight, white and male and therefore inherently stupid, evil, fascist, misogynistic and racist to come back to them.
The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

I'm not sure he can do all that because, lets face it, he's hardly charismatic! He's a straight laced lawyer, the type hwo seems like he's never known fun. That's how he seems to me anyway. In saying that, maybe that's what this country needs. Lets face it, we put a clown in No10, maybe we'll need a 'straight man' soon.

For me he would turn Boris and co inside out, he was involved in the most decisive decision making at the cps for the most important cases working very closely with the coppers etc. That tells me he has a strategic mind and an accomplished decision making ability. The reason I’m out of the Labour Party is for the very reason the values they stand for mean fck all with today’s party members. Socialism as it was is a done deal, the new Labour Party has failed miserably with Leaders of no charismatic attraction like Corbyn and for the last 25 years of bland selfish and pathetic policy’s.
Just my opinion, he would do well to win a quarter of the seats back.

Well if he can't make any serious progress in 5 years against the shower of absolute shite and f*ckwits that are 'governing' us now, then I think we can assume that the labour party is finished and the country is indeed a self-flagellating self-harming bunch of masochists.

I have a Biden theory, like the USA the democrats are working against their own party to get trump elected hence putting in a head fck as an opponent. Democrats have never had so much exposure to support their self agendas. Maybe the same is happening here, or happened in the last election sticking with papa smurf.

Yeah people hugely underestimate the power of personality when it comes to winning votes. Blair had it. Thatcher had it, Churchill had it. There’s always room for the dull and boring but brilliant administrator or tactician but they usually have other roles whereas the leader usually needs to have that character. Why did Brown fail when Blair had been so strong? Brown is and was by any definition a heavyweight politician, hugely capable and respected but he was no leader because he was so effing boring. Even the labour spin doctors saw this and tried to turn him into a ludicrous all smiling all dancing caricature of Blair.

The CPS......hasn't the CPS been in a proper state for ages, not charging serious criminals because it wasn't in the public interest but then prosecuting innocent people on the flimsiest of evidence....was that Starmers time?
