Bit of a history nerd and use various podcasts for my long runs. The big hitters such as Empire and the Rest is History are both great, and fully accessible to us non-historians.
Ear Hustle is another fantastic podcast - started out as a project in San Quentin hosted by inmates and has expanded into other jails across the US. Incredibly insightful - and bound to give you a resentment against the US prison industrial complex. The episode where the main presenter gets released a few seasons in had me in absolute bits. Great thread, I listen to a lot of podcasts while I'm working.
Another one for The Rest is History, newly found Athletico Mince and love it. Two not mentioned so far are Geoff Norcotts What most people think, and we have ways of making you talk, about the second world war and encompassing an awful lot.
I listen to a fair amount of true crime stuff because I have the time, a lot of it is throwaway, but ripcurrent, about two women who separately tried to assassinate Gerald ford, is actually really interesting, taking in american counter-culture.

The only downside of it for me is that he no longer has the playlist that he ahd on his radio show, which was such a refreshing change from somewhat limited monthly playlist that Absolute prefers. |  |

There's some great investigative journalism ones on BBC Sounds that I enjoy listening to. Sports Greatest Crimes for a sports one, the first series of which was on the mental time at Notts County when Sven turned up, hosted by the lovely Alice Levine as she's from a County family.
But lots of other really good ones. They've done some really good series on the 40th anniversary of the miners strikes this year, BBC Leicestershire did one focusing on the Leicestershire mines which didn't strike except for a handful (in the grand scheme of total numbers of workers), and there was another one done by BBC Nottingham too on similar lines.
Uncanny by Danny Robbins is great, if you like ghostly mysteries, and they're always quite balanced and take both believers and sceptics seriously without judgement.
BBC Northern Ireland have their "Assume Nothing" series which focusses on lots of different things. They've done a couple of series serialising the memoirs of a Special Branch Officer and I've learned lots of things about those times I knew nothing about through it, really eye opening as to what went on and what people had to deal with.
I generally listen to very few sporting podcasts, I generally prefer just watching or doing it compared to talking heads waffling on about it. I got a bit bored with Undr the Cosh eventually.
That said on football, and its quite a few years old now, but James Richardson through the Athletic did episodes looking back at the 90s and 00s of Italian football (basically the Channel 4 era more or less) called Golazzo which was really good. |  | | |

On history podcasts, have you checked out Dan Carlin 'Hardcore Histories'? I was really into them at one point. They are *long*, serious commitments. UND'R THE COSH
Sounds like three middle aged men who are interviewing a few old school pros whilst having consumed copious amounts of extremely strong lager.
There are a lot interviewed who had Rangers links and a lot go into some detail about their time with us .
There are a lot of unconventional training regimes and old school humiliation etc

A few of the above come up with so much old school big boy behaviour that they are afforded two episodes
Martin Allen's for his training ideas are hilarious and worth a listen. Understand why he was nicknamed "Mad Dog"
Danny Simpson, Bradley Orr and in particular Rowan Vine are attempting to be Mafiosi and it doesn't quite come off. Rowan Vine doesn't come across as a man you would like to have in your close circle of mates !!! Bradley Orr comes off best of the three but obviously a lot of what went on, no chance it's happening in today's football world.
Caulker and Carlisle go on about their troubles with the demon drink. Clarke is a lot more aware than Caulker, as you would probably expect. Caulker mentions about when he got transferred i believe to a Russian or Chinese team just like that. Carlisle goes on about how he went into a deep depression after missing a late chance to put QPR into the lead at Millenium play off game.
I can't remember much about Zamora going on about the play off final but he says a bit about him saying to Joey Barton, to take a few of them with you after Bartons sending off at the Etihead in the Aguer oo game.
Dowie I think briefly goes on about Briatore era.
Paddy Kenny and Marc Bircham are as you would expect too.

On a totally different one to Under the Cosh, there is THE HIGH PERFORMANCE PODCAST
I quite enjoyed sports stars, politicians and film stars interviewed by Jake Humphries and a well known psychologist.
Think interviews with cyclists Mark Cavendish, Victoria Pendleton and Bradley Wiggins.
Really shows how being so committed and winners does not make you happy at all.
Second in the world for all of those three is really just a national embarrassment for them !!!
Very interesting hearing the psyche of people who have made it to the very top.
