Absolutely not. Police are there to act as independent evidence gatherers. You can’t have the police deciding what to charge in serious cases. Lawyers decide on the law not police

Police are not there as independent , they are there totally to prosecute and nothing else. [Post edited 29 Jun 2022 20:36]

Their official role is to investigate all evidence even that which takes them away from charge. In reality that doesn’t happen. Police courts were a disaster which is why they were scrapped

Nope. If a police officer arrests you, they believe you are guilty. If they thought otherwise they wouldn't arrest you

Apples with Apples. Criminal law Barristers are paid a pittance. If they were getting paid the same rates we'd agree. [Post edited 30 Jul 2022 11:21]

I’m sorry but I’m not having this. I too have read The Secret Barrister but if one has been on the receiving end in a witness box or seen victims taken apart so badly they forget their own names I remain cynical. No Barrister is “poor” . There. Barristers on upwards of 500 quid per hour could maybe spread the pot. Pittance covers many jobs especially in private firms and the legal profession rewards well evidenced by the piles many barristers live in. Yes, it takes time to become one but apprentices in all trades got pittances before they fully qualified

Two from my section were suspended for a couple of years and one studied for the Bar,the other a solicitor. Both qualified and both specialise …IIN CRIMINAL LAW. A former police officer as a Defence Barrister is a serious dude to be afraid of and many are . Courts are places of fear apart from many defendants who simply enjoy a good show, want to see their brief humiliate police and witnesses and get the jury confused ,so confused they can’t agree and he walks free. It’s an everyday story of simple folk

I can fully understand your ire given what you saw back in the day. Things have changed and whilst pre tuition fees (and dare I say it the first iteration of fees) people were able to get by on a low salary. Times have changed and I think that's worth bearing in mind.

I'm not doubting some criminal Barristers earn big dough, but this sweeping generalisation that they use Pol Roger to clean their toilets is a bit misleading
