RMT on 22:53 - Jun 15 with 3626 views | jack_lord | We have been talking a lot in work today about the unions position. How are the Railways going to pay the workers. This will be funded by job cuts or price increases. Not very popular vote winners. Unions do have a place in the workplace though. My company wanted to introduce a change to the workplace in the last two months. There was a 5% bribe. The union members were able to talk with the union rep who had a meeting with management. All rosy in the garden, compromise made, 5% offer still given. The non union members thanked the union members who were able to prevent the change through negotiation. This would not have been prevented if there was no conciliatory body in place. In complete contrast to my last company where the company shat on the staff for years promising the world and giving nothing but excuses. No union no negotiation.

Unions definitely have a place. They're important organisations. Where the problems begin is when Union Leadership is more interested in picking fights with the Government than protecting the best interests of its workers. They have to be careful here. The cost of living crisis is a very real problem, but it's not one that's going to be solved by giving everyone a great big payrise. That would just make things worse.
| Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back. |

Average rail worker is on something like £47K apparently, a paramedic £31K. This looks like political nonsense.

Instead of just saying he does not want the strikes to go ahead Starmer needs to heavily criticise the proposed strike action. Any word from Drakeford or is he OK with it as the trains are running from the east into Cardiff. EDIT Soon Cardiff will become more reliant on trams, another £500M to start and bound to rise. https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/500m-tram-train-cardiff-llantrisan [Post edited 16 Jun 2022 8:11]

Labour and particular MPs like Wes Streeting get funded by the RMT that's why Starmer is half-cocked on this

If the railway workers want more pay, how about starting with providing a decent service. The railway service in this country is like something out of a banana republic.

Paramedics with two years’ experience normally move into a Band 6 salary thanks to the so-called Paramedic Pathway. Band 6 salaries currently start at £32,306. The annual salary for a Band 6 on the 3rd & final paypoint is £39,027 What’s The Most A Paramedic Can Earn? Paramedics who successfully climb the ranks and ultimately become a Consultant Paramedic could earn up to and beyond £70,000 a year — a Band 8c salary. I don't even know where to begin with rail workers and what salary they earn . Paramedics are one specific job within the NHS which is obviously public sector. Should we look at individual job specifications to get a better comparison within the rail industries? Are the jobs comparable. Good god no. At face value it looks like the rai worker is doing well compared to the paramedic who has to go through the medical training.

RMT on 09:10 - Jun 16 with 3441 views | Lorax | I strongly believe in unions, I was a CWU rep myself once. This strike though, looking at the wages they are on and taking into account the prices people pay on trains for the services they get, quite frankly it's ridiculous. Then compare their wages to other other jobs, jobs we can possibly agree are more worthy of more money but who get les than the average RMT worker and it looks even sillier. Though I am all for unions I am not all for strike action, it is often a self defeating strategy and I knew plenty who were happy to strike but not happy to stand on the picket line, they'd rather just take the day off and go do "better things" with their time. The problem to me is, the bosses get big pay packets and think they deserve more (which they usually get) but they never think the people on the front line deserve more. These bosses often come up with stupid ideas that don't work and the whole company can go around in circles and end up back doing what was originally in place, I saw/have seen that happen in my workplaces. For an example, a very well known national company spent millions rebranding itself as "Consignia" only, a couple of years later to realise it was a big mistake, the original name was still better known worldwide and they ditched all the Consignia branded stuff and went back to the original name. Does anyone remember that, without googling it?

Average NHS worker is about £27K a year and average rail worker £47K. I agree it is difficult to compare like for like, but rail is a better paid sector.

What do people think when they see this? Are they really so hard of understanding. The political mess isn't all down to the tories, it's Labour too, we are run by idiots whichever of them wins. 500 million pretty much just for Cardiff and Llantrisant but he wouldn't spend 1.2 billion on the M4 that would have benefitted maybe 3 times as many people, would have helped businesses in West Wales.

Expect that one project to be just the start before it is rolled out to other areas of Cardiff. I expect Drakeford to say we need to get the cars off the roads in Cardiff to improve pollution and electric trams are the way forward, Westminster we need more money.

I honestly cant believe that people from other parts of Wales travel to Cardiff & see the amount of money being spunked at the place. Its fair being the capital city that there should be more investment but to see the rest of Wales turn into slums under Drakeford & his cronies is an embarrassment to the Welsh public. For those of you who haven't been https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/cardiff-changed-five-years-develop Unless there are areas of Swansea I am not visiting, not sure the 2nd city see's a fraction of that investment. The poor infrastructure into South Wales will see costal resorts in West Wales fall behind as people don't want to start their holidays sat in Newport on a clogged up M4 & then drive at 50 mph past PT steels works to stop air pollution. (That's without companies not investing) The Welsh public are taken for mugs & the majority lap it up election after election, you reap what you sow.

Yes, probably. Then there's the budget for it, it's put down as 500 million so we can pretty much guarantee it'll end up closer to One billion, if not even more. Welsh Labour, looking after Cardiff since 1997 but sod the rest of Wales. Just like Westminster with England, they don't see far past the "Capital city" and if the tories ever won in Wales I doubt that would change.

It doesn't really matter which of the big two are in power Cardiff will always have more than their fair share. IMO the only way to change this is Plaid, but I wouldn't vote for them until they drop the indepence agenda.
