Mates, I’ve mentioned this before 21:48 - Mar 17 with 2448 viewsKeithHaynes

It’s been an interesting few years for me.

I’ve still got a lot of good mates about the world, especially from the military.
But those I’ve met over the past five years, pretty much none of them are what I would class as friends. They are pretty anonymous when what you would call a friend is needed.

What’s your circle of real friends like ?

I would say ten at best are good friends. Regardless of the time we don’t speak or even acknowledge each other. Then there’s those who think they’re friends but really they are not.

I’ve spent quite a while getting rid of them, not nastily, well, in a few examples but they are pretty poor people all round. They may well have the same opinion.

I had one mate who I thought was a friend whose wife said that he shouldn’t speak to me as my bad luck regards my daughter might rub off on them. Seriously.

Your thoughts on your mates ?

Obviously family are different. You’ve got no bloody choice with them.

I think welsh working class people make great friends for life.
Yes about 10 are best buddies.
Maybe mates you played football with…?

Some richer and more self absorbed people are less likely to make life time friends.
They also tend to move around more.

When the heavy industry was in south Wales, many people lived and worked together.
Geat mates who looked out for each other.

Wives can change some mates, sounds like one of your mates took a hit on that one. Shame.

I have friends that I went to school with at age 5, some still live in Swansea others are dispersed around the World, others I have worked with are mainly in US or Australia/NZ.
Many are people who have behaved impeccably when times have been difficult and I have witnessed them do the right thing when they did not need to. People who keep their word, help others and are honest about themselves.
I'm lucky to have these people in my life.

People are deluded about friends , especially in this day and age where people think 300 FB contacts are friends , the most real people don't have many friends , just work out who they are and trust nobody else apart from them and close family

You find out who your real friends are when you need them, had loads of acquaintances but very few real friends, those that I had are no longer with us. Very comfortable with my own company and that of those very close, especially the dog.😄

That is the best and most accurate post ever on here.It is exactly how I view life. I 'd preface my comments by admitting I am a difficult, capricious and complex person and not always easy company but if people can't handle that then ...y know.

I have few friends but those which I have are 30 years plus; lifelong in fact.

My immediate family are rock solid and they come first .Wife and I will do anything at all for them and vice versa. Friends can turn out to be fey when it all comes down to it . I have undone many friendships out of choice although some I called friends on this site's previous incarnation let me down spectacularly and proved to be not friends at all. I dont think we can form relationships on forums such a this .

I have been in some posters houses ,eaten with them and we have had Fans stay here overnight ; I would put them up again but it seems "friendships" on forums can quickly turn sour.

I find south Wales people to be generally friendly and helpful and will gather around in times of trouble. I'm not really that sociable ,if Im honest ,and would rather my privacy kept away from nosey buggers. My nan kept the front door open at all times;horrendous thought. People where I live are either very friendly and funny or really quite shyte and often quick tempered. It' s an odd place in many ways but I love it so much. North Welsh are amongst the least friendly people it is possible to meet, apart from Wrexham area which is great .

My Plod days are over 20 years behind and Im in touch with several still but wouldnt call them friends as such, merely people who did the same job. I did though have some excellent colleagues who would watch your back but they didn't have to be friends to back you up. It was team work. I have more contact with former people involved in my Sales career and one rang me last week after 15 years for some advice so I can't be that bad . Sales is always competitive and you have no friends at all just competitors really.

This is a good topic and Ive been honest so Im hoping comments remain non personal. We were asked by Keith how we felt and we then reply.

I'll end this by saying that one should always put wife and children first and socialising (drinking)with friends is secondary. I was never one for going on sporting away trips with a bunch of lads to get hammered and spout abject drivel to strangers in other lands.

Hundreds of acquaintances having worked for 2 large companies over a period of 50 years.

Two real friends who are there for me and me for them 24/7. No questions asked.

Reminds me of a line in 'Caledonia' (song by Dougie McLean) - 'Lost the friends I needed losing, found others on the way'.

Great song.

Very interesting thread and shows a rather more honest analysis of what friends are

Friendships always dumped unceremoniously when it suits

Agreed, it seems the older I get the less I want to socialise, me and dogs against the world. About 3 real friends.

Dogs really are your best friend.
They just love you for who you are and don’t judge .

I got a cracking group of mates, majority of us have been friends from around 9/10/11 year old from school, picked up one or 2 into the group as the years went on.

Obviously don't get to meet up as much as we used too but get together now and again, always get together for our annual Xmas all sayer that will be doing its 25th year this December.

Had our arguments, laughs, got into a bit of bother but can't fault any of them one bit and have been really AND I mean really lucky to have a superb group of close friends.

PS-Only issue is 2 of them are Villa fans and can be hard work on that front 😂

Same here. I did have a much larger group of friends going back 15 years but these days I can name 3 I absolutely trust. There's another 5/6 I can trust quite a lot but not absolutely.

Otherwise it's my wife, son and my 4 legged best friend.

I won't go into family beyond saying you can choose them these days, or rather you can choose not to bother with them.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Friends, most over rated commodity ever.
Most are too selfish to be real friends. Most are only out for themselves and could give a toss for anyone other than numero uno.
The only person in this life you can trust is yourself.
The world has lost the plot.

Oh no, a real friend is THE most valuable commodity. The 3 people I consider REAL friends are more reliable for me than my family (besides my wife and son obviously) so if what you say is true of you then, I'm sorry, but it seems you have not got any true friends.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?
