RIP Dick Fosbury 19:10 - Mar 13 with 1317 viewsNoelmc

Another legendary sports star from my youth has passed away at the age of 76.

The very definition of a game changer in his sport when he invented the Fosbury Flop, which revolutionised high jumping.

And he got a mention on one of the questions last night in the Only Connect final, which was a little odd.

RIP.

They had to redesign the landing pit which up to that time was just sand, okay for the "straddle" technique. Can you imagine coming down on your neck and shoulders on hard sand?
R.I.P. Mr. Fosbury.

Well, if St. Peter delays entry no doubt he’ll jump the gate.

His flop made no difference to my ability to jump over the bar, I just did it belly up. However, how incredible to go against all the perceived wisdom of your sport and effectively do the total opposite.

A little known fact is that the "Fosbury Flop" was originally performed by the French legendary footwear designer Monsieur Philippe but thongs aren't what they used to be.

Even those with little or no interest in athletics should recognize he set a high bar.

I believe the previous technique - the one where you get your leading leg over, and then the trailing one - was known as The Boston Roll.
