Club announcement pending on 19:38 - Jul 21 by ReslovenSwan1 | They are more concerned by creating a sustainable football team that generates its own income. In effect growing and developing as seen in the glorious 'Jenkinista era' 2002-2017. Not a bean invested and still kicking Man Utd and Arsenal home and away. This methodology must work as they cannot compete with the Sovereign wealth funds. Getting to the Premier league with £100m debts like some teams is not an aspiration for them in my opinion. I believe Swansea city to them is a challenge and a test of their investment and ability. Cooper was doomed the moment he sniffily dismissed the two team USA players offered to him. I watched Arriola the other day. He was super energetic and skill full. Given 17 minutes. When they come to sell I firmly believe they will find a buyer without too much trouble as long has they have a credible team and business plan for the club including the much talked about stadium expansion and naming right. Burnely did it funded by the Dell Corporation. |

I think we'll have to get promotion to the Premier League before we're sold, unless of course some local well-to-do's get some money together and purchase the club at a cut price fee...

I think we bulked up the squad quite well before last season started - we were missing an out and out 9 but I’m not sure if even a prolific centre forward could have scored many for us particularly during the post Christmas slump. Safety first got even safer

Club announcement pending on 18:14 - Jul 21 by Dr_Parnassus | I’m not sure the understanding was there at all. You were under the impression that as we had agreed to it, we wanted it to happen. I think you made the point of framing it that “we paid him to leave”, which doesn’t quite give an accurate picture of the situation. Those analogies showed that you can take a financial hit to break a contract without proactively wanting it to happen. Realising it’s now for the best and wanting it to happen all summer aren’t in the same stratosphere. You have been better than most, agreed. But you have also fallen into the trap of wanting to frame things negatively to paint a false picture or indeed the most unlikely one. Again “touting himself around” was a main one, when clearly he didn’t. Yes I truly believe he wasn’t touting himself about, he spoke to Palace after they requested to speak to him. Perfectly normal. Yes Fulham did say that, but again they weren’t going to say we got our number 2 target. I think it was widely accepted Fulham had Cooper in mind but didn’t want to pay the money. Football is not a secretive world. These forums knew Cooper was going long before anything came out. If Swansea were willing to let him go for nothing, we would know about it as it most certainly would not be confidential information. Again, you don’t try to open contract negotiations with someone you are wanting to get rid of for free. It’s a narrative that again is being painted in the negative when all rationale suggests it isn’t realistic. We wanted him to stay. He wanted to leave. We said he can if people pay the price. They don’t. He downs tools and demands to be released from his contract. We reluctantly agree. That’s essentially what has been reported and nothing I’ve seen suggests that isn’t the case. To paint it as something other than that seems strange to me. |
I’m still under that impression. We may well have wanted him to extend his contract, but the minute he said he wanted to leave regardless, I’m sure the club decided they wanted him out. As you alluded to, why would we want a disinterested manager doing the bare minimum? I try to be balanced on everything on here. I was never pro Cooper or anti Cooper. I didn’t like his playing style or way he blamed players for defeats. I didn’t like how we got stuck in ruts for longer than most promotion candidates. I agree he seemed popular with the players, he brought in loans that significantly improved our squad, but the overriding factor was results, which is why I stated plenty of times that though I wasn’t 100% convinced, I’d have preferred him to stay. According to the clubs official site, the guy has decided to leave without a job to go to. That’s not going to look great on his CV. The big question should be why he decided to take such extreme action. A guy who is that unhappy at work that he just walks out though, absolutely would have been touting himself about when he had a realistic chance at higher profile jobs. That’s how it looked to me at the time and today reinforces my opinion. If an agreement was reached two weeks ago, it’s pretty much fact the club would have known his views before that. If they have asked for a compensation figure that stopped him getting a job, then paid him off a few weeks later, it’s rank incompetence. I don’t believe we have though, I think he just didn’t get either job. The analogies are a clever way to present a comparable situation skewed to suit the individuals viewpoint. I don’t particularly like them here or in most scenarios because they are invariably loaded.

He had 17 minutes over two month spell under Cooper. I saw a super energetic spell of 92 mins v Toronto in the MLS two weeks ago. I know you do not have a high regard for the MLS but Arriola was as fit as a fiddle and a real menace. I very much doubt Korey Smith or Jay Fulton could match him. Connor Roberts could for sure.

What on earth is with your fixation with the guy? He looked as fit as a fiddle in 17mins in the MLS. Amazing. He didn't in his time with us. This has been done to death&by keeping on about it you're making yourself look ridiculous. He was match fit/uninjured for barely a few games while he was here. The ones he was fit for & he wasn't selected in we gained a very good points total. His exclusion was obviously justified. There is no argument here. You can't play injured players.

. We were nailed for promotion with a proper 9 (and 10). Anybody that's played in a bang average team that signs a proper 9 will know how seismic that change is - inspiring all players from the back, feeding the midfield through to that frontman. It's a massive driver which motivates the entire team to get the ball forward. Folk that don't get this need to do some research if they haven't experienced it first hand. .

He looked fit and energetic over 92 minutes in one game in the MLS v Toronto. Then again you do not watch closely the details like i do. He is the sort of energetic player Swansea should have used. He only got 17 mins in Swansea much less than Cullen or Smith for example. It is my fixation and was also the fixation of the US owners who will not be impressed the way he as a full US international was treated. I told you this months ago. It finally caught up with Cooper and Marsh who you reckoned was on leave. It was a bad mistake to upset the ownership. Watch the details and follow the money. I have forced you to answer my questions on other matters i do not want to repeat but it will have done you no harm. Questions no one else has gone anywhere near, to be fair to you.

Club announcement pending on 19:14 - Jul 21 by Dr_Winston | The whole "We knew he was leaving two weeks ago" is particularly interesting when you note that Palace, Fulham and Bournemouth filled their managerial jobs around two/three weeks ago. We gave him a chance to tout himself about and find something else. He couldn't. Mutual consent was the last resort. |
They knew he was leaving 2 weeks ago, the positions were filled 3 weeks ago. They also said they were trying to get him a new contact. So it’s bizarre (maybe not considering your slant on Cooper every time) that the conclusion you would make is that. The logical scenario is we wanted him to stay. He wanted to leave as he’s only on 3k a week. We demanded compo from anyone wanting to take him meaning they baulked. Cooper says this is the last straw, I’m off. Which is largely supported by reports at the time, prior and since.

Well then we need to revisit the marriage scenario as one does not mean the other. You can financially lose out by willingly ending a contract, despite not wanting to. The fact we were offering him a new contract suggests we didn’t want him to leave at all, we only agreed after it was clear he didn’t want to be here, which sounds like a few weeks back. So saying it was us that wanted him out all summer is false and painted that way intentionally. Your version of events makes no sense and doesn’t make any logical sense, it is just always the most negatively painted towards Cooper. You said the club wanted him out all summer (despite trying to make him stay with Winter stating so). Once that was clear and there were jobs available then they would simply have broken the contract with no pay off and Cooper could speak to them as a free agent free on any compensation wrangle which is reportedly what was putting clubs off. Something drastic has happened from that moment. The only reason for Cooper to not terminate his contract amid the interest would be that he would keep his Swansea job as a fallback. But it appears he wasn’t going to stay anyway, so the notion of him keeping his job and touting himself about is completely devoid of common sense. It would have been cheaper for the club and better for Cooper if they had a clean break at the end of the season, however it’s clear one side wanted the other to stay. It really is as simply as that. So while you can say “the club wanted him out all summer” and that “he touted himself about all summer”, neither appears correct and both conclusions need to have some pretty odd mental gymnastics devoid of logic in order to reach. Which is why things painted in the negative are pretty easy to spot. They often make the least sense... like DrW earlier stating that they probably weren’t trying to offer him a new contract but trying to avoid a legal case for dismissal (?!). It’s just nonsense and I don’t for one second think you aren’t blind to it.

Club announcement pending on 01:34 - Jul 22 with 1233 views | Dr_Parnassus | This is the logical timeline of reports. Try and do the same with the club wanting him out and also him touting himself around, neither will fit with any of the real time reporting. This absolutely points quite clearly to what has happened here. 1st of April “TEAMtalk can reveal Swansea City boss Steve Cooper is looking for a significant pay rise from the club as his reputation in the game grows. The Swans’ US owners have already indicated that they are in talks, but we understand that Cooper is wanting a big upgrade on his current deal.” .................. 24th June Exclusive - Crystal Palace had hoped to name Swansea City's Steve Cooper as their new manager, but the cost of his release clause has seen the Eagles turn to Lucien Favre. ........................... 27th of June “Fulham are reluctant to pay Steve Cooper’s compensation fee in order to bring him to Craven Cottage this summer. What’s the talk? That’s according to a report by Football League World, who claim that Shahid Khan is not currently prepared to pay the £3m compensation fee it would require to get Cooper out.” ........................... 21st July Club Statement “Swansea City can confirm that head coach Steve Cooper has decided to leave the club. Despite efforts by the club to enter dialogue with regards to a contract extension, it was subsequently agreed by both parties to mutually part ways ahead of the 2021-22 season.”

Club announcement pending on 04:07 - Jul 22 with 1171 views | Rock | Fulham - Marco Silva https://theathletic.com/2684634/2021/07/01/why-fulham-turned-to-marco-silva-a-co “Fulham needed a replacement who could lift a gloom that has followed a second top-flight relegation in three years and Parker’s unceremonious departure. And quickly. It was decided early on that Silva was the man for the job. It’s understood that once it became clear there were overtures from Bournemouth for Parker – as The Athletic has documented – Fulham began planning for the possibility that he would decide to leave. Silva had been previously identified during the club’s ongoing due diligence and was seen as an excellent fit by sporting director Tony Khan and the Fulham recruitment team, particularly with regards to his playing style and personal ambition. Discussions with Silva were kept under wraps during what was a secretive recruitment process for the Portuguese coach. There was a determination to keep his name out of the media in case talks did not reach a positive conclusion. Shahid Khan met with Silva in Portugal last week and was impressed by his eye for detail and knowledge of the squad. Silva was the only coach spoken to by Shahid Khan. Coupled with excellent references from previous clubs, executives and players alike, who are said to have spoken highly of his professionalism and the man personally, it was decided he would be the coach entrusted with leading Fulham’s attempted promotion campaign. Silva was also contacted by top-flight Crystal Palace, but they decided to go in a different direction and have since agreed terms with Arsenal great and former New York City and Nice manager Patrick Vieira.“
Club announcement pending on 04:12 - Jul 22 with 1165 views | Rock | Crystal Palace - Patrick Vieira https://theathletic.com/2673062/2021/07/04/the-inside-story-of-how-patrick-vieir “Yes, he was not first choice. Admittedly, the club pursued other options over recent weeks far more enthusiastically before talks ran aground, first with Nuno Espirito Santo and then Favre. But, in the Frenchman, Palace have a manager who buys into their overall project and who will not ask them to overexert themselves financially in the transfer market. That focus on youth is a priority as much as it is also likely to prove a necessity. Discussions had been promising back in April, but Palace ended up swayed by other targets who had come onto the radar unexpectedly and boasted more experience. Those initial talks were, nevertheless, sufficiently constructive that contact was maintained with the hierarchy while Palace explored first Nuno and latterly Favre, the man he had replaced at Nice. Once the Swiss delivered the bombshell confirmation that he would not be signing the three-year contract on the table, Palace, having licked their wounds, quickly moved to speak with Vieira once more. While there were suggestions the hierarchy were attempting to revive their interest in Favre over recent days, those were effectively a red herring. Their priority had effectively switched to Vieira after last week’s Swiss snub. Talks resumed shortly following the conclusion of Switzerland’s Euro 2020 victory over France on Monday evening – a game on which he had worked as a television pundit in London – aimed at securing an agreement. That was subsequently reached in principle in the small hours of the morning.”

Q&A: Paul Arriola on his ‘frustrating’ loan to Swansea, evolving USMNT role and D.C. United’s new look https://theathletic.com/2552990/2021/04/29/paul-arriola-usmnt-swansea-dc-united/ Q: Your loan to Swansea was cut short after you reinjured your quad; but even before that, you seemed a bit snakebitten. What did you take away from your time in the Championship? What were your impressions of the league and what did you learn there? A: “It was a good experience, right? You try to take the best out of everything. But it was also very frustrating. It was a frustrating situation. I went on loan obviously really wanting to play and stay in form and help the team get to the Premiership before coming back to D.C. My main goal was just to prove myself over there and get a run of games and try and keep a good form. But it was tough. I can’t lie. The level was good, I don’t think it was anything different than what you see in MLS. The style of play was a little bit different, the pitches were awful. Every single one of the pitches was awful except Stoke; and I think it plays a huge factor into the Championship, and it’s why teams consistently play direct, and play with big center backs and big No. 9s and five at the back is because of the conditions of the fields – tight pitches. But Swansea itself was a great club. Everyone at the club was amazing, the players, the staff, a really young group of guys. It felt like a family-feel type club. The facilities were great, besides the field. I think obviously in the end, looking back you want to go somewhere where you feel really wanted. And I’m not quite sure if the manager there really had great intentions of me helping the team or maybe he thought I’d just be an extra number just offering reinforcement at some position. When the opportunity came – as a player, especially one that hadn’t been to Europe, I wanted to go, I had to go, I had really high hopes to do great things over there for the club. And then when you get there and you realize and understand the situation you’re in, you can really only wait for your opportunity. And unfortunately I really didn’t get one. I got a couple of late features in a couple of games but besides that, it ended up being disappointing. I did make great relationships, though and I was able to see what it was like over there – now I know I can play at that level, obviously you see other young Americans doing it at that level and in the Premier League as well. It definitely wasn’t a setback for me and I don’t see it as a failure. Now I’m just focused on turning the page, going forward here and having a great season in D.C. and taking it from there.” Q: Throughout your career you’ve expressed a desire to ply your trade in Europe. Did the month or so at Swansea satiate that desire? Or do you feel an even stronger pull to go back knowing that things didn’t work out like you’d have wanted them to? A: “After my experience at Swansea, my attitude is just “go where you’re wanted.” The next time I move, if I ever move from D.C. United, it will be somewhere where I’m truly valued and somewhere where I’m there to make a difference on the team, regardless of country or style of play or anything like that. What it comes down to is whether you’re going to get an opportunity – and then it’s on you. And I’ll always bet on myself to make the most of an opportunity.”

Ok. I don’t have a massive ego and am comfortable with the fact that just like everyone else, I get some things right and some things wrong. If something which changes my opinion comes to light, I have no issue saying something that contradicts what I said three weeks earlier. I don’t need to back peddle to suit a previous narrative. The facts today as I see them. Cooper wasn’t particularly happy at not getting a striker in January. Clearly didn’t want Ariolla. Wanted a significant pay rise in April. There was a breakdown in relations between Cooper and Winter (possibly due to the two previous points). He effectively said goodbye to the fans after the Brentford game. Was rumoured to have been talking to Fulham in the run up to the playoff final (never substantiated, but we all know he spoke to them after and that wasn’t either) Fulham and Palace jobs came up. He went for both. Didn’t get either. A mutual consent separation is announced. He’s got no job to go to. Club say they were preparing to offer him a new contract. From my perspective, he absolutely touted himself about, knowing that if he didn’t get a job this summer, he was leaving anyway. The club were absolutely fine with this, knowing that if he got one, they wouldn’t have to pay 4 or 5 people off. From yours, we demanded a prohibitive amount of compensation and ended up with none and having to pay him and his staff off. I don’t buy that we would have been so naive, given that relations had broken down and we knew he wanted to leave. Yesterdays events wouldn’t have come as a surprise to the club and would have been on the horizon more than two weeks ago. If we stopped him going to Fulham or Palace by demanding fees they weren’t willing to pay, then paid him off ourselves, it’s incompetence. If he’s gone there and not got the job, which appears by far the most likely to me, it’s out of the clubs hands. [Post edited 22 Jul 2021 6:34]

But you missed out Winters insistence that they tried to get him to sign a new contract. Which of course means the club wanted him to stay. You also skirted over the fact that the only place where “Cooper touted himself around”, came from posters on this forum and not echoed or reported anywhere. You also said he went for the Fulham job even though that isn’t reported anywhere either. The only reports were that they wanted him but wouldn’t pay the £3m asking price. Same as Palace. Also important to note he didn’t approach them, it wasn’t an application on Seek - they wanted to speak to him. That’s not touting yourself, simply by definition that’s wrong. I don’t really have a perspective other than the most likely series of events given we now know for a fact the club tried to keep him here and that the reports were that Fulham and Palace wanted him but wouldn’t pay the £3m. This whole “touted himself around”, “club wanted rid of him all summer”, “neither Palace or Fulham wanted him” is simply created from posters on this forum who admit knowing nothing. Absolutely nothing points to those being the correct assumptions at all, in fact everything points to the opposite. He was approached (he didn’t tout himself), the club wanted to keep him (not wanting rid of him) and both Palace and Fulham wanted him but wouldn’t pay the compo (not both tossing him aside). There has been some incredibly dishonest framing of things all summer. We both know that, these are just the main three, there have been many more. If Swansea were happy to offload him for free then they would have done so at a no expense agreement right at the end of the season. We didn’t do that because we wanted to keep him, anyone who came in for him we clearly demanded money for (as reported absolutely everywhere). There is no need for the mental gymnastics to try and create a completely different scenario which doesn’t really make much sense just to paint a negative light towards Cooper. I posted the timeline and it’s clear. No need for me to add my own spin or an alternate summary, all I did was posted the dates and the reports and the story tells itself. Club announcement pending on 00:13 - Jul 22 by ReslovenSwan1 | He looked fit and energetic over 92 minutes in one game in the MLS v Toronto. |
We've been through this. It's completely irrelevant even if he played like Pele incarnate 5 months after leaving us. I assume that's when he was fit again. You talk about details - that's a very telling and obvious one you seem to miss. It's a simple concept- you can't play injured players. And as I keep saying, for the games he was available and fit for-we had a great return. So why you would you want to look back on that very small window&try and rewrite history and slot him in is just bizarre. So you're comparing him now to Korey Smith! - a defensive midfielder, who if you want details - during the Arriola window, didn't play much actually. And the games he did - we won them all! Why would you want to look back with hindsight and change that!? Liam Cullen - a fox in the box striker! Guess how many minutes he played during the time that Arriola was available for selection? Zero minutes obviously because he was out injured! Think you need to start looking at the details more closely. The 2 players your American buddies brought over contributed nothing and the results show they were given the correct amount of playing time here when they were available. If the Americans are the savvy businessmen you claim they are, they'll be details men and see that themselves. Not let their own vanity get in the way of progress surely? Time to move on from this one. You need to live with the facts.

Club announcement pending on 05:05 - Jul 22 by Rock | Q&A: Paul Arriola on his ‘frustrating’ loan to Swansea, evolving USMNT role and D.C. And I’ll always bet on myself to make the most of an opportunity.” |
I gave up reading that when he started complaining about the pitches over here. Were the balls too hard for you as well Paul? Poor dab

Well if he's got the desire to come back to Europe, after getting the Resloven seal of approval after that magical game against that MLS side, surely we'll be seeing Arriola join one of Europe's superpowers. Only about 6 years after most of the promisingly Americans leave, but never give up Paul.
