Transport Secretary Louise Haigh quits over phone admission on 11:27 - Nov 29 with 1172 views | AnotherJohn | Haigh is saying this was a one off incident where a phone she thought was stolen was later found, but a Times investigation found that there was a wider pattern of missing work phones. She is another who made much of probity in public life and Johnson's "party gate" sins. According to a source from within Starmer's team, he is not looking to offer the vacant ministerial post to a "purple-haired socialist". Extract from Times article behind pay wall. 'Haigh pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation in 2014 after an internal investigation by Aviva, the insurance giant. Haigh worked as public policy manager at Aviva between 2012 and 2015 before becoming the Labour MP for Sheffield Heeley. The Times has been told that the company launched an investigation after Haigh said that company mobile phones had been stolen or had gone missing on repeated occasions. Aviva referred the matter to the police and Haigh was prosecuted in 2014. She pleaded guilty at a magistrates’ court. The conviction is now spent, which means it has been removed from her record. After being approached by The Times, Haigh said that she had been mugged during a night out in 2013, describing it as a “terrifying” experience. She said that she reported the mugging to the police and gave officers a list of what had been taken, including her work mobile phone. “Some time later I discovered the mobile in question had not been taken. In the interim I had been issued with another work phone,” she said. “The original work device being switched on triggered police attention and I was asked to come in for questioning. My solicitor advised me not to comment during that interview and I regret following that advice. “The police referred the matter to the CPS and I appeared before Southwark magistrates. Under the advice of my solicitor I pleaded guilty — despite the fact this was a genuine mistake from which I did not make any gain. “The magistrates accepted all of these arguments and gave me the lowest possible outcome (a discharge) available.” The police were supplied with details of more than one instance that had been looked into by Aviva but the criminal charge related to one phone. She declared her conviction “in full” to Starmer on being appointed as shadow Northern Ireland secretary in 2020.'

The story adds up perfectly. She was a director at aviva and also made several claims through aviva for missing phones. The fraud department at aviva got suspicious and launched an internal investigation where they passed information onto the police who charged her. Presumably then she was let go by aviva with a golden handshake and immediately picked up by the Labour Party who fast tracked her to the shadow front bench. It’s a good life for some isn’t it?

Ah I can see how I go wrong, if I lost a work phone and had it replaced on finding the original I would hand it back. I will never make Minister of State.

Yes she had a long history seemingly of claiming for things that she wasn’t entitled to so the natural progression would be to end up in the House of Commons.

I think Starmer has no choice to move people on quickly after making a stand about ethics in politics. Interesting that he knew about this in advance though.

I don’t think it’s an unpopular opinion, resigning is 100% the right thing to do and is a bit of a throw back to when politicians who were in the wrong did the right thing and resigned. Should she have ever been selected as an MP and been a Minister…. Well that’s a completely different issue and for the record I don’t think she should have been.

She’s been in the wrong for ten years though. She’s known she’s a convicted fraudster since 2014. Why now? My guess is she’s been tipped off the media was about to out her and she jumped before she was pushed.

Yes and Starmer came in saying things would be different but what's happened? Starmer said no one with a criminal record should be in politics and she says she told him about this so he makes her a minister...double standards there surely? They aren't as bad as the tories but they have 4 years and some to go, lets hope they improve.

Agreed. Surely there's some kind of enhanced DBS/vetting process. Madness that this was undetected until now.
