Brexit .... My thoughts... 11:07 - Jun 16 with 146599 viewsJacksDad

The one thing I am certain of re this vote is that no-one knows for sure what the repercussions economically will be if we pull out. If you listen to the experts it will be better if we stay in, however its all unconvincing. My issue is that after 10 years of Austerity, the services in this country have been cut to the bone, that is services that are needed by us all - not just Immigrants/benefit spongers. We are not in a position to afford the enormous gamble if it all goes t1ts up. I am taking my lead from Ray Winston and gambling responsibly and staying in. If we ever get to situation when everything is adequately funded and horrible 0 hours contracts were abolished ... then maybe it might be worth the risk to pull out. But to do it now is a massive gamble which we just cannot afford to lose.

I actually do have a problem with the ‘Royalty’. Was Oliver Cromwell not an a passionate Englishman?

I'm not a royalist either, but if the majority of people want to live under an unelected monarch, i'll live with that.
But I think these proud englishmen, could soon be regretting their decision, after realising we are not an empire any more and need close ties with our fellow albeit annoying europeans neighbours.
Especially when their castle is being surrounded by baliffs.

I'm shocked by this but nothing confirmed yet

So the doomsayers are out in force as expected --- would've been people saying slightly similar things but in reverse if flipped the other way
I was (am) pro leave so fine by me.

There will be an adjustment shock but things will even out - key thing now is how things settle and what the UK government does. The biggest risk is another General Election as if Commrade Corbyn sneaks in then the economy really is under pressure. Then we also have the risk of some spite stance from Dave and George, they just need to remain stoic and stick to their plans (unpalatable as they are) if not they'll be out anyway.

Many here are seeing a weaker UK and collapse at home. I foresee a weaker EU and the future collapse of a restrictive and red tape organisation and GB should be deregulating itself now to encourage investment in the next few years. Who's to say Belgium, Sweden etc aren't now going to push for referendums?

Nothing confirmed yet but we'll see..::

Not sure what to think about this decision for now as à Dutchman, mixed feelings between either very brave or rather stupid.
Think THE consequences will appear in about two years.

On the other hand sounds of a Dutch exit will become stronger now too.

Just put Kristy MacColl on with ... A New England

Been watching with a great amount of surprise and interest even though the result doesn't directly affect me, except for the favourable GBP exchange result. There has been absolutely no mention, so far, on the BBC that I've been watching about the possibility as mentioned below.

There are some very interesting times ahead, that's for sure. I just hope that despite the near 50/50 split the people involved can focus on what is best for UK.

I don't hold out much hope for this amiability because this thread which has been, up to voting day, very informative but also fairly cordial is just about to descend into less cordiality.

Prove me wrong....

Interesting/difficult times ahead...

Jigsore, of all the comments I have read on this subject, maybe of all comments I have read on any subject, yours fills me with despair. This issue is a prime example of why referendums exist, my god man what is the point of democracy, otherwise? Whether you're in or out or don't vote, it is the option of expressing an opinion that is supposed to separate us from totalitarianism or dictatorships. I'm presuming British Constitution or Civics has been dropped from the curriculum since I idled my time through school?

What fills ME with despair is that around 3 quarters of 18-24 year olds voted remain as did my area but because of some baby boomer on a mobility scooter in Margate my whole futures up in the air. All that bloody time learning EU politics when I should have paid more attention in French classes

Scotland will leave, the Northern Ireland issue has already flaired up again with what consequence I don't know. Johnson running the country, Gove redrawing my human rights. You'll probably get some of the right-wingers doing well in countries like Poland and Czech Republic and attempt to leave too because historically that's always gone well but i'm sure the EU will survive... just even more German centric

Cameron ought to just resign right now he's already f*cked that legacy he was so keen to procure. Gambled and lost, badly

Doomsayers? it been the same message throughout the campaign.
I don't remember one economic argument suggesting a possible recession if we remain
Just no one has been interested in the message.
You should be thanking Commrade Corbyn his limp support of the remain campaign and the lack of labour voters getting out is the source of your victory

But..... We still need Dave to actually request Article 50 at Brussels. If he doesn't I'd be amazed but there's still a chance.

I'm not surprised to see the vast majority of young (under 25s) voted to remain whilst the over 60s wanted to leave.

That sums up fairly well what i thought, which was that remaining was the best long term option, leave for those looking for a short term benefit.

We'll lose Scotland now for a start though. I'm not sure i can see we're that much better off isolated. But then, such a complicated issue, who the hell really knows. I've never been a big fan of democracy as an effective system; it's rubbish. But then, so's every other system. I wanted to remain, but i can see why people wanted out, it's been a farce. But it'll still be a farce.

Ugh.

I don't know, but at least the 836 who voted leave in Gibraltar will be happy, hopefully they have a boat, as the border might become tricky to cross

As this is just a referendum asking for the opinion of the British people, Cameron should now go back to the EU and demand the changes the country requires for the UK or he will trigger article 50 which he now has a mandate to do. An act of Parliament will need to be passed for that to happen so if the EU wants to keep us in then they need to accede to our demands. The alternative is that Cameron resigns immediately and a General Election is called as the current House Of Commons is largely against leaving the EU.

I'm really stunned. So where does that leave people that now work in France for example? Surely they will lose their right to work there?

I am living in France and have run a successful business for the last 10 years. There is talk that we may have to get visa's to stay, although knowing French bureaucracy this will take at least a good 10 years to organize.
Let's not forget that there are sh*tloads of French working in the UK, what happens to them? It will be interesting to see which government is more sympathetic to these 'foreigners'. I think I have a good idea which one it will be.
If anything it will be an interesting next 12-18 months as this all begins to settle down.
I may have to ask my French girlfriend to marry me, to stay here! Might be a bit awkward though, I've only known her for 6 weeks..

I am pro-Europe and pro-immigration but I just think the EU as an institution is busted.

This is a good thing for Europe IMO.

Scary, worrying but at the same time exciting.

It was a no-win vote for me. I want to be in an EU but I don't think that this one really wants us. I wanted them to want us but if they don't then what can you do?
