Norwich Away - Trains 11:20 - Dec 13 with 1350 viewsNW11R

Morning all - was thinking of popping up to Norwich for the game via trains from Stratford.

I am a bit apprehensive given the time of year and how unreliable they are at the best of times. Anyone got any advice as to viability of using them; they seem to be running okay according to Trainline....for now.

Yes i use this line to come to Rangers from Norfolk , should be all good for the Norwich away game .
As you say service starts from Stratford that day went home from Stratford station after wednesdays game & it was fine , look at 2 singles to maybe be cheaper than a day return .

Sunday between Xmas and New Year feels ripe for cancellations due to lack of staff. Hiring more staff is not an option of course.

I’m honestly not trying to make any political point here; but if you owned a business and you knew that you were going to lose that business at the end of your tenancy (lease), would you invest in more staff, better and more rolling stock, or would you line your pockets best as you can before being kicked out?
Unfortunately by saying that it’s all going to be publicly owned that’s the current scenario.

What's been their excuse for the last 20 years though ?

None, whatsoever, but in my "limited" experience of using trains for work (Chiltern Line) and following the R's up and down the country, things weren't so bad pre COVID.
Last weekend the Mrs & I decided to take a week away to North Yorkshire as a treat, and as we had a. locked down and b. suffered with some health issues, I said I would "treat" us to a first class train journey. CR to Birmingham was v.busy but we just about got a seat but at Brum the wheels fell off!
Our booked train was 55 minutes late and they'd de-regulated 1st; it was mobbed and the train manager denied boarding to everyone. She pointed to a far platform and said there will be another one in a few minutes. After struggling with luggage and mobility issues we goyt there to find exactly the same scenario. Upshot was that I forced my way on and we has to stand until Leeds (not good for a disabled person).

Speaking to that train manager she said that the company were overselling tickets to such an extent that this was now a regular occurrence and that with the fact that she'd "only" earn £50 per hour on a Sunday meant nobody wanted to work what with the hassle etc.

Definitely nothing like my experiences pre COVID. (I may have been lucky)?

As much as I've moaned about them in the past, I'm of the view that Greater Anglia is one of (if not the best) the better run Train Companies & that there will be no problems with the trains on New Years Day.

As a company they have no control as to when Network Rail close the lines & it is not often that carriages are reduced in number. What is possible, of course, is that the buffet bar won't be operating & that the toilets are out of order! Last Saturday with 12 coaches on the train there was just one toilet available & they didn't expect that to be usable for long! However, the timetable was run as scheduled.

Norwich is on dec 29th rather than new years day , but apart from that i agree with everything you have said Terry . These are 12 carraige trains & after around 0930 they are running every 30 mins so in the unlikely event of 1 train being cancelled there would be options.
Spoke to a friend who works for greater anglia & he reckons there will be more than enough cover for drivers etc as there are no early services to cover that day thus reducing the total number of trains to staff .
We have had very few cancelled services on this line at short notice & i will be trusting it to get me the 16 minutes from Diss on dec 29, see you all there .

Absolutely right about the date Sir!

I did look at the schedule for the 29th & NYD, but that's a feeble excuse for posting the wrong date!
