Dykes sold apparently on 20:20 - Aug 28 by Myke | No we don't . We are (at best) a mid-table 2nd tier club. We cannot justify having 3 strikers when we only use 1 up front. We have more pressing concerns in defence, where both our regular full-backs are out of contract next summer. We cannot afford to let players run down their contracts and leave for free. |
Of course we can justify it: we are one of the top 40 clubs in England so I think we can afford to have three strikers in the squad.

Dykes sold apparently on 22:14 - Aug 28 by Ned_Kennedys | You forgot to repeat what you originally posted: “could not hit a cow's rear with a banjo” Scored 37 goals for us and has 9 international goals: deserves more respect than that and your claim that EVERYONE agrees with your opinion on him is misguided. |
Fair enough. I think a lot of people agree though. He improved over time with us, but overall a poor signing. Just my opinion that is though...

Dykes sold apparently on 22:26 - Aug 28 by slmrstid | If we signed a guy who scored 37 goals in 165 games as a striker (one ever 4.45 games on average) in 4 years at his prior club we'd all be saying, to a tee, "WTF?" and "this is a risk". So really we can't be sad at losing a striker with that record. |
Unless you drop down a division….? Closer to Livingston level ? Actually probably not, that would be L2 or Conference but still relevant.
Dykes sold apparently on 22:56 - Aug 28 with 4309 views | SydneyRs | Look I like the effort he always put in and he scored some decent goals. But surely the fact he's dropped a division when leaving says a lot about how good he actually is.
Dykes sold apparently on 22:58 - Aug 28 with 4273 views | Monkey_Roots | Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but it is a bit weird that many of you are getting misty eyed over him leaving - his goal scoring record for us the past 2 years has been an embarrassment. It wasn’t even like he put himself about and gave defenders nightmares, he got manhandled constantly. I wish him luck, but I’m really glad we’ve moved him on. He did not score nearly enough. 3. He always put in a really good shift. 4. He always showed the right attitude. 5. By all accounts an ambassador for the club off the pitch. 6. Great when he had no time to think. 7. Poor when given time to think. 8. Overall not a great in a QPR shirt. |

In the same way Field wasn't bought for his passing ability and criticising him for his lack of assists, Dykes wasn't bought as a goalscorer. Our attacking play has been poor for 2 years which coincides with Chris Willocks injuries. Dykes goal scoring record was very poor last year, as was Chairs & Smyths, largely down to a team set up to defend given precarious position Cifuentes found himself in. I believe Frey is a significant downgrade on Dykes whereas if Celar can handle the physicality he could be an upgrade, especially with Dembele & Saito playing early balls into him, let's see & hope.

Tend to agree with the point that strikers, especially nowadays, aren't always brought in to score goals. That Brian Clough mentality has died out. But if you don't score you need to create. I always thought Dykes sadly fell between these two roles and didn't really do either in decent enough numbers. Bad advice / coaching maybe? I certainly don't subscribe to the 'good riddance' view though. Good luck to him. [Post edited 29 Aug 11:25]

what was he brought as if it wasn't to score goals? Thats surely what any forward is signed for and judged on his record wasn't great before Willocks injuries either, WIllocks best season was 21/22 when Dykes scored 2 goals from October to May He's always been a player who when he doesn't think about it he scores goals, some great finishes against Sheff Utd recently, Stoke last year but anytime he has time he looks awful You can blame Chair for his lack of goals all you want but he's missed some real sitters in his time here which would have really improved his numbers For me he's been the best of a very bad bunch of forwards in the last 10 years and the fact we've had no one better and arguably still don't is not a good look for our recruitment team Saying that I think he'll do well at Birmingham in league one and hope he does well, a very likable bloke

Yes as I have said before the true credit in the bank is to come back from being in hospital with pneumonia and help us get out of trouble that season when others were shying away from playing with far less. Wish him nothing but the best.

Your Dykes obsession is baffling to the point of weird. He's a very ordinary player at this level and has no outstanding attributes, which is why he's dropped a division.

Dykes sold apparently on 12:56 - Aug 29 with 1955 views | Hoopsie | Dykes dropping a division - on more wage? - non promotion release clause? - promotion bonus? - goal scored bonus? (Brum won’t need to worry this one) But let’s face it, he signed an extension last season. He could have gone this season with the club getting nothing, so by doing what he did when he signed on knowing we were going nowhere (heavily tipped for relegation) credit should be given that the club got a fee. He was probably allowed to choose if a club came for him this season and he probably thought it’s time to move on. Thank you Lyndon wish you well but hope your goal drought continues every time you face the Rs

Warburton bought Bonne as a goal scorer and imo bought Dykes to play as a focal point to assist the 10's in exactly the same way Steve Clarke sets up Dykes in his attack. So many of our fans (not directed at yourself) think centre forward and think of Clive Allen & Paul Goddard back in the day playing as a pair, whereas Dykes role as a lone striker 20 yards+ from the 10s is so completely different in modern football, Can't recall the away game but Andersen got to the bye-line, Dykes ran to the near post and dragged the Centre Backs with him leaving the space created behind for Chair to step into and score, Now Andersen immediately ran and congratulated Dykes, as he had executed a training ground drill perfectly, Que no doubt for some of our occasional away day fans to berate Dykes for never scoring goals or regurgitating his first season weakness of always being "on his heels' and I give Austin the credit for helping correct this, Dykes has flaws we didn't improve, similar to Chair most noticeably, and I think it's a shame we haven't got the best out of these two in recent seasons, particularly Chair who has greater natural ability and potential.

He's a very decent Championship level lone striker, which is why a bigger club with greater potential than ours have offered him a very sizeable £1m+ pa salary up to his 32nd birthday, Ask yourself why Steve Clarke picks him ahead of Che Adams & Oli McBurnie and your some way to understanding modern football and how traditional roles within the team game of football have changed.

Also, if he’s that good why has the gone to a bigger club than us with potential in the Championship? Perhaps a Sheff W or a Sunderland. Brum have been s**t for years and don’t have anymore potential than we do, he’s gone there because no team higher want him, it’s his level

Look at B'hams spending this year, similar to maybe Ipswich the previous season, with their new investors they're not what I would consider a League 1 side.

If you think Dykes is a very decent Championship striker, I question your credentials in judging someone’s understanding of modern football. Nice guy, does a lot of work for charity, but in my opinion, isn’t a very decent championship striker. Bit of a donkey. [Post edited 29 Aug 13:55]
