Syria War - 300,000 civilian deaths on 18:30 - Nov 30 with 1687 views | majorraglan | Yes, ISIS possibly sensing an opportunity and are attacking al-Assad’s regime and are scrapping for control of Aleppo. Putin who has supported the Al-Assad regime may not be in a position to provide a similar level of support as he has in the past on account of Ukraine and the Iranians the current regime’s other big backer have had a bit of a beating off the Israelis of late and they may also be on the back foot. If al-Assad was toppled then it could destabilise the Middle East even further and it could jeopardise Russia’s base in the med.

Syria was backed by Iran, hezbolla and Russia. Those three have have other wars now. Iran and hezbolla have been hit by Israel and Russia has its own war with Ukraine. This have given an opportunity for Assad's enemies to regroup and regain their strength.

The so called rebels, are backed by the US and apparently Turkey too. Iran hasn't been hit by Israel, apart from a few missiles of which did no damage, and they retaliated. The US can't afford another war either. I wonder what the new admin under Trump will do - nothing i suspect,as US foreign policy doesn't change with it's presidents

Strange how just after Trump has been elected a cease fire has been agreed between Israel and Hezbolla I Lebanon. Russian can hardly spare any munitions for Syria as it has to import weapons and drones from North Korea and Iran.

This is what he said about Iran in September 2024. “If I were the president, I would inform the threatening country — in this case, Iran — that if you do anything to harm this person, we are going to blow your largest cities and the country itself to smithereens. We are going to blow it to smithereens"

If they were to do that, then they would level Israel and any US bases in the region, so no, it won't happen

I see the Russian fleet have left their Tartus Naval base in Syria. This is due to the rapid advance of the rebel forces and Russia is unable to defend its fleet.

War now taking up 33 percent of Russian state spending, the Russian economy is the size of Italy with a population almost three times the size - who will feel the economic pain. [Post edited 4 Dec 11:34]

Why have they left then? The same reason the black sea fleet left the Crimea after half of it was sunk by Ukraine a country without a navy.

Any ship thesedays are very vulnerable to modern missiles, They like to keep their distance to give more time to track and intercept missiles. Russia has never seen itself as a great maritime power, but it's land and air forces are a different matter

I stated it has never seen itself as a great Naval power, therefore the emphasis is not on sea power. It only has the Crimea as it's outlet into the warm water seas, hence the importance it has on the Crimea. It has ships in the east too.

Russia withdrew its fleet from the Tartus naval base in Syria as they could not guarantee its safety with the rebels advance In 2022 Russia increase its presence at this bases as it was not longer able to sail its warships through the bosphorus straights in Turkey. It is not certain where its fleet is sailing to as it has no other naval bases in the Mediterranean. Some reports say the fleet will sail to Kaliningrad. It seems Russia cannot protect its fleet or citizens In Syria as they know have limited air support in Russia and lack the logistics supplies to mount mass ait strikes in Russia. Also today the Romania courts have declared the first round of its presidential elections void citing illegal activities by a foreign country and mass transfer of funds from from Russia to individual bank accounts in Romania.
