Thread | Surreal conversation about QPR in Antigua

Just back from a week away in Antigua with the wife. We did the "around the island tour" on Monday and had a weird conversation with the driver/tour guide Sean whilst we drove past the The Viv Richards stadium (built for the Cricket World Cup 5 years ago). Apparently they get bigger crowds there now for the Antigua football matches than the cricket and most of the youngsters wear Premier league tops. So he asked the dreaded question of which team I support and I was suprised just how much Sean knew about QPR, from our survival last season to our struggle this one and how optimistic he was that we would survive (I struggled to be so optimistic).
After seeing the result last Saturday on bbc world news, I then got to see the whole match on Fox soccer plus (unfortunately), which was followed by a panel discussion on Mark Hughes and should he keep his job. They all agreed that in one of the best football leagues in the world, his stats just didn't add up to him staying and basically they thought he should have already been replaced.
Back this morning to a wet and windy south east bbbrrrr. Roll on Man Utd, a make or break in more ways than one.

Football fan fracas at racecourse

Thirty football fans brought terror to an afternoon at the races when they fought running battles for 15 minutes.
Groups of Swansea and Cardiff City fans clashed at Newbury Racecourse leading to the closure of bars around the circuit and police descending on the site.
Only three people were arrested - two for affray and one for a public order offence, Thames Valley Police said.
It was not clear why the sets of Welsh fans unleashed their violence at the ground in Berkshire, marring the Newbury Summer Festival.
Race track managing director Stephen Higgins said: "There was sporadic fighting over about 15 minutes with approximately 30 people involved. We have absolutely no idea why it started."
Inspector Phil Rogers of Thames Valley Police said there were on a few minor injuries and no complaints were made to police.
Officers were called at 4.03pm by the race ground staff.
Insp Rogers said: "Two arrests were made for affray and one for a public order offence. The remainder left on buses. It appears to be caused by football supporters from Swansea and Cardiff who met in the ground."
Racegoer Julie Davis told the Racing Post: "It was a disgrace and I won't be coming again. It took so long to get it sorted out. Every time you thought it had stopped it started again. I reckon there were at least 30 people involved. It was scary."
Another punter Denise Mathias told the Post: "It just seemed to be a big fight between football supporters from Cardiff and Swansea. It was terrible. I saw a stocky man covered in blood having his head stamped on."

Whilst sitting waiting for my wife to return to her seat (after having her blood tests) in the waiting room in the DGH, Eastbourne today, an old boy wandered over and sat in her seat. After a few minutes he started talking to me about the NHS etc and finally got to why he was in the hospital today. He was meant to be seeing a consultant to discuss having a nose operation, which he felt was unnecessary as he knew he only had bad sinus problems.
Then we got to the interesting bit (what do you mean, thank god for that!!). When his GP had asked him how long he had these sinus problems he said "around 25 years doc" and what do you think caused this to start then? the GP asked. "I know exactly when it started doc" he said, "when I went up for the corner and I got a wack on the nose from the Queens Park Rangers defender". That's when I stopped nodding and only half listening and said "who did you play for then?" It turns out he was playing for Dulwich Hamlets fc against us at Loftus rd in a cup game. Unfortunately the wife re-appeared then and he got called, so that was the end of the conversation.
When I got home and tried to find out more about this fixture, I could find no mention of it. I suppose it's a tale he tell's every stranger. What a shame.

How come I post a link to a torrent site for the Four Year Plan dvd which is removed and yet every match day/evening links are posted to illegal websites and these are fine?

Wasps suspend Andy Powell and Tim Payne after bar altercation with football fans
Wasps have suspended Wales No 8 Andy Powell and England prop Tim Payne with immediate effect pending an internal investigation into an incident that occurred in a west London pub on Tuesday night.

The move comes just a day after Powell's former international team-mate Gavin Henson was suspended for one week by Toulon for allegedly fighting with team-mates following a night out after his side's victory over Toulouse in Marseille.
Wasps said in a statement that it was "not in a position to disclose any further details at this stage and will not comment again until the internal investigation has concluded."
However it is understood that Powell and Payne were involved in an altercation with some football supporters at a pub last night while watching a football match between Queen's Park Rangers and Derby County, during which Powell suffered head injuries.
Powell, who joined Wasps at the start of the season, was dropped from the Wales squad in March 2010 when he drove a golf buggy up the M4 to buy a snack at a service station while over the alcohol limit following a late-night party following over Scotland in Cardiff.
Powell was later given a 15-month driving ban and fined £1,000 after admitting the offence at Cardiff Magistrates court.

COCKY Adel Taarabt reckons he is on his way to Manchester United — a week after claiming his agent was in talks with Real Madrid.
The Moroccan did not make the grade at Spurs as he failed to convince boss Harry Redknapp that there was an end product to his stepovers, so joined QPR this season for £500,000.
Taarabt said: ”Nothing is official yet. I had discussions about my transfer after my performance against Coventry City. I’m ready to go to Manchester United.
“We’ll see later in the season, as I’m hoping to reach the promotion target with my current club QPR. I like England, so I am not against the idea of continuing my career at United.”
