How to run a football club ???
at 20:20 9 Feb 2017

From the Bolton News

FEARS over the financial stability of Bolton Wanderers have been raised again as the publication of the club’s accounts spilled over into a bitter boardroom row.

Auditors Deloitte predicted continued annual losses of £11m and refused to pass judgement on their ability to meet ongoing costs.

Phil Parkinson’s team currently stands third in the League One table and forecasts made in today’s accounts underline the urgent need for promotion, which would be worth around £5-6m.

It has been revealed a £5.5million loan from Prescot Business Park Ltd was due last month.

And the uncertainty has been magnified by a feud between co-owners Ken Anderson and Dean Holdsworth, which has spilled over into the public domain.

Both men traded statements today and are now threatening legal action against the other.

Holdsworth described Anderson’s allegations as “false and defamatory” and has vowed to take his argument to the Football League.

At the heart of the dispute is a high interest loan secured by Holdsworth’s Sports Shield company from BluMarble finance, which funded their takeover in March.

Anderson maintains that the amount loaned was £4million but that guarantees were supplied for £5m, while Holdsworth maintains the £5m was loaned in full, with £4m going into the club itself and £1m used to pay-off fees associated with the takeover.

Holdsworth says the terms were agreed in a Share Purchase Order signed in March, with a second SPA signed in May which “enriched” Anderson’s position as chairman and gave him the deciding vote in the boardroom.

Anderson admits there is a threat to the club if the finance company opts to call-in the debt, which had been due to be paid by March 26 this year but is now due in March, 2018. He has also pledged to take his argument to the court.

He said that there had been a failure to inform them that the loan obtained from BluMarble to Sports Shield on or about March 10, 2016, was repayable on March 26, 2016, only 16 days later.

He added that he believed that had subsequently changed to April 24, 2016, at an interest rate of 30 per cent, per annum.

He said that he did not know at the time about a subsequent side letter that he said had been signed with BluMarble.

Holdsworth responded in a statement to The Bolton News this afternoon.

It reads: “It is wrong of Ken Anderson to use the club’s website as his private mouthpiece to publish false and defamatory allegations about me.

“WI will not dignify his absurd accusations with a response in public. I am seeking legal advice on my options and am considering complaining to the Football League about Ken’s behaviour which is undoubtedly damaging the image and integrity of the club and the league.”

The accounts showed Anderson has committed £3.5m in interest free funding since the takeover but has also withdrawn exactly the same amount — leaving his net spend at zero.

Another major detail to emerge included the fact Wanderers received £5,350,000 in player sales — the majority of which came from Rob Holding, who moved to Arsenal in the summer, and Zach Clough, who signed on January 31 for Nottingham Forest.

The Bolton Wanderers Supporters’ Trust voiced their concern at today’s events and announced they would be meeting with chairman Anderson next Tuesday to put them to him in person.

“Whilst we are currently examining accounts and will make comments to our members as soon as possible, we are shocked and dismayed at the club owners’ public statements over the last 48 hours.

“This open conflict can only result in placing the club in a more precarious position than currently exists.

“We have a pre-arranged meeting with Mr Anderson on February 14 at which we hope to be able to obtain some further clarification on matters. We can make no further comment at this stage.”

Checkatrade Trophy fines
at 18:21 16 Nov 2016

EFL Clubs have today been notified of the fines issued for rule breaches in Round One of this season’s Checkatrade Trophy.

All of the offences punished were due to a failure to meet competition rule 7.3 of fielding a full strength team in and during all matches. The EFL did take into account a number of mitigating factors and also considered transgressions that were not within the spirit of the rules.

The ‘full strength’ policy for the season 2016/17 competition was five of the starting line-up must have started the previous or following game (a reduction from six in season 2015/16) or five of the starting 11 who have made the most starting appearances in League and domestic Cup competitions fixtures during the current season.

Invited category 1 Clubs were asked to follow a different set of criteria with 6 of the starting 11 required to be under-21 as of June 30, 2016. None of the invited clubs failed to comply.

The clubs penalised were:

Luton Town - £15,000 (£5,000 per match)
Portsmouth - £15,000 (£5,000 per match)
Bradford City - £3,000
Blackpool - £3,000
Bristol Rovers - £3,000
Milton Keynes Dons - £3,000
Millwall - £3,000
Charlton Athletic - £3,000
Peterborough United - £3,000
Sheffield United - £3,000
Southend United - £3,000
Fleetwood Town - £5,000

The 12 Clubs fined have the right to appeal to the EFL Board. The remaining 36 clubs complied fully with rules.

All 32 clubs still involved in the competition will be subject to the relevant selection eligibility criteria as per the 2016/17 rules.

Cold weather ahead ??
at 10:36 10 Feb 2016

According to the latest weather forecast "The real cold snap will begin on Friday when experts say temperatures could plunge to -10C"

Hopefully we will have the covers in the coming nights but if it is anywhere near -10C I doubt we will have any chance of playing. With the distance Milwall and their fans have to travel an early inspection will surely be made if the weather is so cold

Don Howe RIP
at 19:44 23 Dec 2015

Former England international and coach Don Howe has died at the age of 80.

The full-back played for West Brom and Arsenal, earning 23 England caps, before establishing himself as a renowned coach for club and country.

Howe helped Arsenal to a league and FA Cup double in 1971 and spent four years as West Brom boss before returning to the Gunners as coach and manager.

He also coached under former England managers Ron Greenwood, Sir Bobby Robson and Terry Venables.
'One of the greatest ever coaches'

Arsenal chairman Sir Chips Keswick said: "We were aware Don had been enduring a long battle with illness, but it was still a shock to learn the news about someone who was loved by so many people at the club."

Former Gunners goalkeeper Bob Wilson said Howe was "a fine player but truly he was one of the greatest ever coaches in football".

FA chairman Greg Dyke described his death as a "great loss for English football".

Dyke added: "He is widely regarded as being in the vanguard of coaching in England, and I know that his loss will be keenly felt amongst the coaching fraternity in particular and not least by [current England boss] Roy Hodgson, who was close to Don.

"For his country, he not only appeared in [the 1958] World Cup, but he was instrumental in both Sir Bobby Robson's management team for Italia 90, and Euro 96 where he assisted Terry Venables.

"Even in his latter years I understand he continued to pass on his knowledge and advice to aspiring young coaches."

League One & Two Clubs not permitted to use artificial pitches
at 11:08 12 Nov 2014

League One & Two Clubs Not Permitted To Use Artificial Pitches

At an EGM at Derby County, proposals for clubs to be permitted to use artificial playing surfaces for matches in Sky Bet League One and Sky Bet League Two from the beginning of the 2015/16 season have not been approved following an unprecedented tied vote by Football League clubs.

Thirty-four clubs voted in favour of the proposals with thirty-four against and four abstentions.

The Football League's Chief Executive, Shaun Harvey, said: "This vote is reflective of the fact that this issue divides opinion amongst clubs as much as it does across the football public.

"While the outcome is different to previous indicative votes, it demonstrates that there is still a desire amongst clubs to find out more about artificial playing surfaces before taking such a significant step.”

Tony Brown, 4 Adrian Close, Toton, Nottingham, NG9 6FL

web www.soccerdata.com

Cost is £12.50 plus £1.50 postage

146 pages and loads of individual photos plus team photos for 1949, 1959, 1961/2, 1966/7, 1971/2

The front cover includes a team photo on a 'cold day' in January 1962 (snow on the ground!!)

Those who of us who have bought Stephen's previous books on Dale will know what an amazing amount of research he puts in - we really are fortunate as so many other league clubs get little of their history published

In this period our greatest player Reg Jenkins played for Dale and Fred Radcliffe arrived at Spotland (the Football League's youngest chairman) and appointed Harry Catterick (later Everton) as one of our managers

Our penultimate game of the 1971/72 season was away to promoted Brighton and watched by over 34000 (Nine days later at Spotland against Port Vale, for our final game, the crowd was 2475 !!)

The book really is great value for money and anybody who follows the Dale and takes an interest in its history and our ex-players should buy a copy

Volume 1 which covers the period 1907 to 1939 is still available from Tony Brown at the same price

Hopefully Steven is already working on the period 1973 onwards as I for one cannot wait for it to be published

You certainly can't keep George out of the game for whatever reason

Yesterday he made a superb pass to Hendo on the left wing (which enabled Hendo to set up Peter Vincenti for the first goal) and crossed the ball for Hendo to tap-in the second (after Hery's great run)

At Bristol he made the pass which set up Joe Bunney for our first goal and jumped over the ball (intentionally or not!) from Michael Rose's cross to set up Mattie Lund's tap-in for our second goal

Well played George !!!!!

League 2 clubs budgets this season
at 12:45 27 Apr 2014

Here are some estimates of the budgets for each L2 club this season from various websites and forums. Some obviously won't be right but most should be roughly in the correct region and gives a rough comparison of what we have been up against money wise

It shows what an incredible 'achievement' Hilly, the players, the rest of the staff and the board have done in getting automatic promotion (Accrington Stanley have also performed miracles on their budget)

1. Fleetwood Town £2.1m
2. Chesterfield £1.5m
= Southend United £1.5m
= Bristol Rovers £1.5m
5. Mansfield Town £1.4m
= Plymouth Argyle £1.4m
= Newport County £1.4m
8. Hartlepool United £1.3m
= Oxford United £1.3m
= Northampton Town £1.3m
= Portsmouth £1.3m
= Scunthorpe United £1.3m
= Wycombe Wanderers £1.3m
14. York City £1.25m
15. Cheltenham Town £1.2m
16. Burton Albion £1.1m
= Rochdale £1.1m
= Torquay United £1.1m
19. AFC Wimbledon £1.07m
20. Bury £900,000+
21. Dagenham and Redbridge £800,000
= Exeter City £800,000
= Morecambe £800,000
24. Accrington Stanley £500,000

Wimbledon fans opinions of the game
at 18:11 8 Feb 2014

Rochdale are a top side in the division. We matched them for more than a half. We were unlucky not to get a goal. The disappointing thing is how we just gave up after their first

A well organised team who closed us down in possession, passed it well, broke at speed and had a league best goal scorer beat us as most bookies predicted. We did not do any of these things and so going in at half time without a goal meant we would get slaughtered second half

Personally I thought we were matching them which given they're high up in the table, was fine. Lucky couple of ricochets by the looks of it for the first goal, francomb fouled on the second, third was just atrocious defending but a great finish

Well that was utterly appalling. Clueless, spineless, gutless performance. Rochdale thoroughly deserved their win. Hogan's finishing was sublime. They showed passion, skill, and a real determination to win by playing some decent football. All credit to them. We were completely the opposite. No wit, no passion, no skill, no real desire. It was shocking to watch. Not a single player had a decent game. Fact is we had no midfield to speak of. We were just absent in the middle of the field, and every time we had the ball there it was nicked off us by harrying, in your face Rochdale midfielders.

Rochdale may be in the top few but they were absolutely woeful till they scored, then quite good after that, amazing how significant the sitter Wyke and Hylton contrived to mess up

I am currently sandwiched between 2 trees outside the stadium on the sandy lane/willbutts lane interchange. A very woodland area, would be a great place to harbour a colony of red deer

The pitch looks in adequate condition. This is largely due to the superb draining facilities Rochdale have. I reckon that because the pitch looks so good we might kick-off before 3pm

Excellent interview almost three minutes long

Apologies for not having the link - but go to BBC/Sport/Football/League Two and click on "Rochdale3-0 Plymouth" and you will see the audio to click on

VIEW FROM THE DRESSING ROOM includes

Rochdale assistant manager Chris Beech told BBC Radio Manchester:

"Jamie Allen deserved his goal because he's been a very consistent performer for us.

"We started well and scored early and five clean sheets from six games is something to be proud of.

"We brought George (Donnelly) back into the team and he played hard and he played well. He's very difficult to defend against.

"I've not thought about Saturday (FA Cup fourth round tie against Sheffield Wednesday) because we know we'll need to be at full tilt against Chesterfield on Tuesday."

Stop critcising George Donnelly !!
at 19:24 18 Jan 2014

I cannot believe I am reading someone say "Donnelly only disappointment assist aside lots of running about with no end result"

We all know his strengths and weaknesses

Give the lad a break for god's sake

What 'end result' are you expecting when our tactics were to play him upfront all on his own especially in the first half after we went one up.

When he did get the ball (after chasing a long ball and more often than not and having more than one defender around him) there was nobody to for him to give it to. His ball to put Jamie Allen in for the first goal was superb

Our tactics and team selection were done in mind with our large number of games coming up in the next 2-3 weeks

We win 3-0 (an ugly win to my mind which will do very nicely against teams such as Plymouth) and people still moan about Donnelly !!!!

Newport (who were pretty abysmal at Spotland) are now only two points behind us !!

Top 8 clubs separated by 3 points and top 12 clubs separated by just 8 points

The team that wins the title this year could do it with lowest number of points for many years

The overall quality of the league, compared to previous seasons, is looking pretty poor the more the season goes on with few teams of good quality
