Marti. He swallowed his pride, his ideals and went back to simply making us hard to beat and playing to the team's actual ability, like last season. So far it has got us back on track and I agree, we looked totally doomed before the last international break.
I also think that the Morrison/Cook partnership has been important. Morrison is massively impressive and like Cook, seems to read the game a few steps ahead. No coincidence that we've improved so much. Morrison is a big find. |  |

It was a perfect storm combination of a large and growing injury list and several new players having to find their feet too fast in a totally different league/country that caused the downturn in performances and results. But I feel we've turned that corner now. Varane, Morrison and Saito looking really good. Nardi superb of course. Madsen not so much, but there's a bit of breathing space now and he's a quality player I think. Great to see Ilias back. Still some wobbly areas, like left back, but four clean sheets in a row... that's fantastic.
Oh and Marti was always a class act, but he just had a tough few months trying to sort all this out. But as we know, form is temporary, class is permanent. [Post edited 12 Dec 0:13]

Great post. The loud support during and after that game on the 23rd for the manager when his position seemed in great peril - well we may never know if it swayed anyone. But it can't have done any harm.
Let's hope we keep it going, just as the posts 4 games ago saying "that's it, we are down" were nonsense, so are thoughts that it is all fixed now. |  | | |

We were having difficulties due to injuries, we have been playing with half a team. Some of the players that were selected were poor or too inexperienced because we had no better. We have a decent squad, short in some areas, but decent enough to be a mid table team, maybe better. We are far too good to be relegated, you saw last night(Oxford) what a relegation team was. | | | |

We're a fickle lot, us Rs fans (but I guess no more than most other clubs' supporters). A few good results and edging out of the relegation slots and we're a happy(ish) bunch.
But I too thought we were destined for the drop just a few weeks ago. We're not out of the woods yet but the signs are encouraging and, for me, none more so than Marti's change of tactics. I hope he sticks to a more pragmatic approach throughout the season and doesn't change back as it's obvious the present style of play better suits the players.

I would argue that we’ve come into form at a good time. It looks like we have our weakest team winning and still have players to come back. Two games without a senior striker and we score 5 goals and 2 clean sheets, that works for me.
Wouldn’t say Anderson is dead weight and as much as I have been critical of Madsen I’d argue that his lack of contribution has been less detrimental.
In terms of our survival chances I think they’ve gone up. Other teams will be dealing with similar issues as us and there’s definitely three worse teams. What we’ve got to look out for is Oxford/Portsmouth/Cardiff/Plymouth all have games in hand, we need their results to go our way, but we seem to be getting our house in order. I might as well be the one that throws some water on this fire!!!!
I don't think we are out of this by any stretch. The first 45 mins of football last night was some of the worst I have seen in my life at HQ and that takes some doing! We could not string two passes together culminating in Cook (I think) pinging one off the back of Dunnes head.
For 45 mins we forgot how to pass the ball. I don't think Ashby successfully completed one pass up to half time. And the lack of urgency was alarming. Its 0-0 and we have a throw at right full back. Dunne takes a fu(kin age to amble over to take it only to have sod all options as the movement was zero.
Half time couldn't come quick enough. I would imagine a grenade was thrown into the dressing room as the team came out with a new sense of purpose buuuut....... how bad were Oxford? As bad as we were first half they stank the place out for 90 mins.
There are shoots of optimism but for now ill keep with the glass half empty. Its a safer place for me!
P.S. Chair returning is a plus and its no co-incidence that we are leaking goals with Morrison in the team next to Cook.

Yes the likes of Morrison, Varane, Saito, arguably Celar all getting up to speed.
And the manager taking a more pragmatic approach, bolstering the midfield, getting our shape more narrow and making it harder for teams to play through us. Start of the season we played Field plus all those "ballers" (sorry) who are less keen on tracking back and tackling, funnily enough the defence had far less protection. |  |

While I'm not a football hipster, I'd be interested to see the xG stats, etc. from the earlier games compared with some of the recent ones. I don't think they'd be too dissimilar. We've definitely tightened up at the back but Nardi was still MoM against Cardiff. Similarly, we missed a load of great chances against Watford (xG presumably high) but stuck our few chances away against both Cardiff and Oxford.
We've definitely played better (mostly) recently, though we could have lost to Cardiff and were crap in the first half yesterday. It's fine margins at this level - a fantastic save here, a clinical finish there and you win rather than lose. | | | |

We fans are a manic-depressive lot (the clue's in the word 'fanatic'), and those posters (myself included) who were two or three weeks ago prophesying relegation/Marti's sacking/the collapse of the club and demanding Nourry be garrotted for everything from our ridiculous injury list to Morrison's skied effort at Watford are hopefully tucking into large slices of humble pie now. I had a small piece for breakfast, as it's a big pie!
Marty still has plenty to learn for me, but he's right on the money when he says that everything wasn't black when we were propping up the table and everything's far from ubiquitously rosy now we've picked up a couple of wins/clean sheets. We beat Cardiff, but could easily have lost. We did well at Watford and should have won. Last night's first half was utter gash. We're still at least a playmaker, a left-back, and at least one striker short. But things are looking up, and so should we be, while keeping our feet on the ground.
In short, the glass is half-full and by definition half-empty, but, to quote The Jesus and Mary Chain, everything is (sort of) all right when you're down. [Post edited 12 Dec 14:52]

Feel like the stats mostly tally with the eye test. While we've definitely tightened up at the back and look a lot more solid for Varane getting up to speed and a relatively stable, consistent CB partnership, I do think a lot of the improvements is as much to do with the variance of luck. There were the Hull/Plymouth games earlier in the season where opposition keepers had incredible games and we conceded screamers.
Feel like we're now getting the fall of the bounce, rub of the green with refereeing and offside calls. | | | |
