US Election on 11:26 - Nov 6 by Ifonly | That's impossible. We had a great membership deal (negotiated by Thatcher) which we would never be re-offered and membership on standard terms would be unacceptable (e.g. mandatory Euro membership). So the only option is side deals of some kind without membership, but those have to be worse than full membership rights by definition and will be almost impossible to agree on the EU side. In my book it was the wrong decision to leave, but now we've done it there will be no going back for many decades. Our only option is to build an economy independent of the EU. Unfortunately Labour have no idea how to do that. |
I'm not sure it's impossible, i do think it's painful, and i think we'll have a worse deal. But as a minimum joining the free market becomes vital or our economy is going down the drain.

We're caught between a rock and a hard place. There is a lot of resentment on the EU side because we left. If we try to renegotiate from a position of weakness now, we will get stuffed. We need to build up our economy before going back, so that we are negotiating from a position of strength - but you're right, being outside the single market is a handicap in doing this. Personally I can't see any easy options with Europe (or the US) so we have to concentrate on allowing our economy to grow. A good start would be reversing the damage done in last week's budget, but that's not going to happen either.

From a real politk stand point i don't see how we can survive outside the single market without a major recession here if (and it's a big if) Trump imposes sanctions on imports of goods and services. Like I mentioned the oldest independent economic institute in this country think it'll halve our growth. It seems to me that sometime in the next four years (and assuming Trump doesn't try and extend his term) the government is going to have to have a very difficult conversation with the public about re-joining the single market.

US Election on 20:34 - Nov 5 by saintmark1976 | Jellybaby, I’ve usually a lot of time for your views but can’t see where you are coming from with this post. All I suggested was the U K electoral system and method of declaring a result is better than that undertaken in the U S A , quoted the odds and suggested Trump was a grifter. |
I was just curious Mark, when I know that you understand that the real power lies many levels up from these jokers, nothing personal friend, I enjoy your comments. Trump is indeed a grifter, but what was Biden, what is Kamala, how may times did Bill Clinton go to Epstein Island? Does it really matter what side of the uniparty gets picked? We live in Clown World and the controllers need to find a clown as a figurehead - they are never short of options and they don't care what colour the rosette is.
| I wholly disapprove of what you say and will defend to the death your right to say it. |

Hes been accused of rape and many sexual assaults. He was a close friend of Epstein through the 80s and 90s in New York. Its certainly not good news for our country, there is no special relationship past military allies.

But... he is entertaining though - and at least the BBC are all wearing black armbands today which, in itself, is very gratifying. Anyway, will Trump even make it to January to be inaugurated? I think there's a long list of people who would like to make sure he doesn't!

He’ll put America first, that’s for sure. Maybe 70 million American’s think that’s more important than being endorsed by Taylor Swift.

US Election on 18:33 - Nov 6 with 1222 views | Southamptonfan | I'm no Trump fan, but why has he been elected back in? He talks about America first. His country takes precedence over anything else. Many Americans like that. Russia didn't invade Ukraine during his presidency. North Korea was kept under control. The war in Israel hadn't escalated until Trump had left office. Some.Americans being interviewed stated how they couldnt imagine Harris in a room with Putin telling him what to do and him listening. But Trump would be listened to. He would push the button. The world is wary of him. And people have their own minds. However he is portrayed, some people like him in America. The American gun owners, living in a free America, where people aren't dictated to by the state, goes down well in some quarters. [Post edited 6 Nov 18:35]

I'm really not sure he is putting america first (beyond a slogan), if you look at the things his manifesto promised it's going to damage them. Deporting illegal immigrants (sic) by his own estimations (things he's said) that number is between 2-20million people, so he'd be deporting at the lowest 500k people a year, at the highest 5million people a year. Now ignore the collapse that would cause in the ability to staff companies, and in particular the ability to staff the lowest paid jobs. How do you facilitate that? You'd need a huge, huge border force, a massive police force and an incredible amount of bureaucrats to process it. Which leads onto the next point how would you fund it? Well he's said he's going to cut taxes, but how do you cut taxes and increase the civil service and police at the same time? The only option there is growth. But he's also said he's going to add tariffs to non american products, so that means that the cost of products will have to go up and there isn't even the infrastructure (and in many cases materials) available to do it in America, so raising money from growth isn't going to happen, especially as inflation will rise & the workforce will shrink everywhere except in the police, border control and civil service. Except he's also said in his Project 2025 manifesto that's he's going to decimate the civil service, removing some departments funding completely. So on one thing alone he's going to either have to backtrack or crash the economy completely (ironically Elon Musk has actually said that in the short term under Trump the economy will collapse). So unless you're in the top 1% it's probably going to be f*cking grim for the average American, maybe they'll protest? Well maybe not, given he wants to give the police and army "shoot to kill" immunity when dealing with protesters. Aside from his racism, his misogyny, his convictions, ties to Russia and his links to sex pests he also doesn't seem to understand how running a country actually works.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the wars, now Trump has been elected. The wars currently happening, weren't happening when he was last in the Whitehouse. I think it will be interesting watching from afar personally.

Considering the left are such decent, thoughtful and kind people, who love putting the well-being and prosperity of others above themselves, it always amazes me how much they seem to love war.

US Election on 00:45 - Nov 7 with 917 views | washington_saint | Oh, how funny it has been seeing the liberal elites all throw tantrums over the election results here in the US. Americans do not like being told how to think, what to support or being labeled 'fascists' because they have a different view to the person assigning this label. Likewise Americans, by their very nature, are quite conservative. The whole transgender nonsense (allowing men into womens sports) did not sit well (as the election shows) with the silent majority all while the shameless left patted themselves on the back and continued to hide the obvious: Biden's mental capacities severely diminished. In the years following 2016 Americans did very well from the Trump presidency until COVID. If Trump is a 'fascist' then why did his share of the black community, Jewish community and Latino community soar? I did not vote for Trump (nor Harris) but can understand why a lot of people did.

To me, someone who spends time on both sides of the pond this is not solely about politics, this is also about morals Trump is a felon, a racist, a bigot, a sexist so if people think the rhetoric he spouts is alright with them it says a lot more about what people think is acceptable and that to me is a damning indictment

Unfortunately, both Starmer and Trump will damage the UK economy. The UK is a highly open economy, which means that imports and exports are a high percentage of the economy. In the tariff war that is probably coming, open economies will get hit hardest. We will be collateral damage between the main protagonists, but we may get hit hardest of all because we're so open. I can't really see Trump agreeing to sweetheart deals with the UK when our foreign secretary called Trump "a racist KKK and Nazi sympathiser” (this also shows that he isn't fit to be foreign secretary but that's a different story). Our only option is to boost the domestic economy with business friendly policies that generate growth. Unfortunately the budget has shown that Labour's talk before the election about prioritising growth was simply lies.
