Everything that was warned about with regards to switching to a style that the players aren’t suited to is now visible to most. There is a very good reason we didn’t start trying to be Brazil of the 1970’s over the last 2 seasons… and as a result saw the side be one of the best in the league… it’s because the manager realised the limitations of the squad and played to their strengths. That’s management.
I am wondering at what point the collective penny will drop that we cannot continue to play this way UNTIL we have the squad capable to do it. The Championship is too strong a league to be doing that, last time we got to this level we were a slick, well oiled machine with players capable of playing Premier League football in Dyer, Williams, Rangel and Britton. That spine would go on to win the League Cup, finish top half in the Premier League and perform well in Europe…. A championship spine it was not.
We had the players with ability leagues above the level they were playing at meaning we could afford to take some risks with regards to playing style. A nearing prime Leon Britton in league 1 seems a bit laughable now doesn’t it? That’s because it was.
The situation sadly is not the same today. We need to play to our strengths, get some points on the board, get the players in that we need and slowly incorporate the system you want. People talk of long term plans… and then change a system overnight?! We will get slaughtered at this level.
How about that actually becomes the longer term plan touted about and we slowly implement it while protecting our Championship status? Too mad an idea?
We do not want to lose our league position and drop down to league 1 as I see some people now happily stating they wouldn’t mind. I find that sad to read and extremely naive.
Relegation won’t mean us having an easy season to test this style against, we will lose even more players, have less income to replace them and the spiral continues. It’s an arrogant point of view to think relegation can be handled easily by the club.
Relegation is not a positive option and the fact we have gone from play offs to the Premier League to accepting the realities and the weighing up of pros and cons of League 1 football in such a short space of time should tell you something ain’t right.
I like Russell Martin, I think he has a good future in the game, my issue is not with him and I hope he stays for a long time to build something. My issue is with the attitude surrounding everything at the moment that we must play a certain way immediately, regardless of the damage it will cause.

This topic was created in August. The issues we had with the system were clear back then. In post number 3 of the thread I stated that these issues were not time specific, they can be made after 2 days or 2 months such is the significance of the problem.
It was suggested by those that saw these issues, that we should slowly introduce this drastic system (if that is what the manager wants), and to do it as and when we get players capable of playing that style into the club so we don’t get battered in the process.
Losing every week and then complaining you don’t have the players to play this way is utterly pointless.
Those issues are still there today and only beginning to be recognised by everyone some SIX MONTHS later. Those that attacked these views are now parroting them as if everyone now accepts this is the case - yet still feel the need to attack these posters who called it so right and saw it long before them. So strange.
The general consensus on this thread seemed to be that we can teach anyone to pass 5 yards, Martin won’t (and shouldn’t) change the system and that patience and time will turn the likes of Bennett into excellent footballers and make this system which has never worked before into some super system.
I remarked that the lack of understanding was stark regarding this way of playing and doesn’t just require someone to be able to pass 5 yards.

Trouble is, we have players who can't pass it 5 yards.
We have players that seem unable to pass it to one of our men, who isn't heavily marked.
And if that's what they want to do, then it's up to the manager to change things so that doesn't matter in the course of a game |  |

Passing under pressure, having evasive ball control, spacial awareness, excellent reading of the game and footballing peripheral vision are key to playing this way.
Not everyone needs the above and a few can be carried, but your key players and line breakers need all of the above to expert levels.
Rangel, Williams (less so in the latter of his career), Britton, Dyer, Borini, Dobbie, Allen all had this, as did De Vries as much as I didn’t rate him as a shot stopper. Then you had the likes of Pratley and Taylor and Sinclair who could do it adequately. The only player we were covering for was maybe Tate.
The more facets you have to your system the more room for error too. We used width as our outball before and just the fact Dyer and Sinclair were on the pitch stopped the opposition from committing to the high press.
The second they did try, we would either work it to Rangel to get it into the channel for Dyer or use the direct diagonal ball from Williams. Every move had a purpose and we were one organism with one collective brain.
This is worlds apart. No real width, no excellent ball playing defenders, slow and ponderous build up, instruction to invite the press by refusing to go direct and long. We have 11 individuals that seem completely disconnected from one another, defence not moving in synch, acres of space between and behind them, midfield all over the place and a keeper that nobody has confidence in.
It’s ugly, really ugly and there are some fundamental problems being ignored simply because we end the game with more possession. There doesn’t seem like any concerted plan to turn the possession into concise attacks, it’s more like a plan to keep the ball and whatever happens… happens.
