Interesting though, that comps were being imposed from Labour policy of the mid 60s, (even before the time Keir attended that school), and the widespread opportunity to try for grammar school, stripped from the majority of ordinary children. What was wrong in that, don’t be so reticent, I am eager to be ‘schooled’ by you and your superior knowledge. But for some inexplicable reason you keep avoiding the question. Umm I wonder why. |
Because the fact that Reigate Grammar now charges fees has the square root of fûck all to do with Starmer going there in the 60s. What exactly was your point other than making a cheap dig at someone from a working class background rising to the top? After you’ve looked up “foreign correspondent” 😂 have a go at “non-sequitur”.

What his parents did (and I would say they were both very respectable and respected professions), what schools and universities he attended and his properties, financial and professional position now are different things. Personally I would say he is pretty posh, and I think many would agree with me, but that is obviously a value judgement. When did I ever indicate anyone could not make money? It is if you consider Paris to just be the commune of Paris (2m people). What we all call Paris is the whole city of which the commune of Paris is just one bit, The whole lot has a population of about 12m and the density is far lower.

Excellent, so there was nothing incorrect in what I said. You said he was very clever and I said what they charge now may be worth it. I never once suggested he paid anything, although it was a private school for most of his time there and had been previously. I was agreeing with you, he seems a bright bloke. I cannot agree he went to an ordinary school, given Labour policy since the mid 60s and it seemed at odds with the strong professed family ideals. I have every admiration for what he has achieved, same as I do for many others. But to attend such a school was a privilege, that had been denied many others by Labour policy.

No one has said anything about being respectable. But having parents who were a toolmaker and a nurse is not posh. Nor is going to the local grammar school by passing the 11 plus. You described his supposed millionaire status as a sigh of his ‘poshness’. He’s a millionaire (if he indeed is) because both he and his wife are lawyers. He’s a QC.

Taxes will obviously have to go up to pay for the massive giveaways BOJO is giving out at present, he really is going the extra mile to look after the working class, but I expect the lefties to still try to find fault in his generosity to them. 7,5000,000 paid up to £20,000 each for the 8 months from March to October to sit on their backsides sounds like a socialists utopia.Never again can the Conservatives be accused of not looking after the working man. One thing is for sure the higher the number the greater the lefties will be w@nkimg, we’ve all seen in these posts the vile scums attitudes.with one of them actually saying at the start Coronavirus would be good since it would kill the older generation of which there are a lot of English, the same remoaner who said that the older people who voted leave should also be killed. This. A perfect example of a person, supported by his parents, who has worked hard, taken the opportunities available to him and made a good life for himself and his family. in other words a self made man. Too many people with petty jealousies having a go. Whilst not being anywhere near as talented as Mr Starmer, I was brought up with similar values. My father was a coalminer and my mother was a dinner lady. We didn't have much but they worked hard and I went to university and recently retired after a successful career at a pretty senior level. I have been able to pass on similar values to my children. My old dad use to tell me..."i'm doing this boy, so you don't have to". Strong traditional Labour Party values, passed on to me and from me to my children. Perhaps those who don't go to work, sponge off the state and expect everything to be given to them should try taking a bit of responsibility for themselves. Hopefully, under Mr Starmer the Labour Party will be able to rediscover those values that have been lost under the previous shower.

Sadly, I think you could be right. There was talk of a worst case scenario being around 250,000, I don’t think we will reach that level but I don’t think we will be lower than 120,000 and 150,000 is possible. The number of deaths is already much higher than the Government Covid19 official figures, we are probably well over 50,000 already. The initial Covid19 deaths published by the Government only included those who tested positive in a hospital - as of yesterday that would have been 27,171, however more recently that was expanded to include deaths as a result of positive results in other settings and the figure is now 32,692. https://www.ons.gov.uk/file?uri=%2fpeoplepopulationandcommunity%2fbirthsdeathsan This article from the BBC provides some detail of the current position, some of the readers of the Daily Mail weren’t very complementary of it but explains the situation! During the period week ending 17 March through to the week ending 24 April, 90k people died compared to what should have been around 52,000 (combined average weekly figure from previous 5 years) a difference of 38,000. If you factor in the number of deaths reported by the Government between the 24th of April and yesterday that’s another 9,000 added to the total so it’s close to 47k before the next set of ONS figures covering the period to the week ending May 1st are published. Sorry to quote you in particular Major but why have the BBC taken to changing the way the report infections and deaths. They started out doing it by health authority but now they’ve split it into towns. The figures around here for example were given for the Swansea Bay University Health Board but now given individually as Swansea , Neath , Port Talbot and possibly Bridgend too??
