Indeed I've never got the praise for a terrorist. SA isn't exactly Utopia after his involvement either.

Nelson Mandela RIP on 22:28 - Dec 5 with 2721 views | macthejack | I get what you mean Daz. Certainly an iconic figure and had a lot of wise and important things to say, also a great leader but I feel his importance and legacy have been blown a of proportion, especially outside of Africa. A hero to many certainly but I feel a fair few have jumped on the band wagon. I can't honestly say he has had any real affect on me in life or death. Maybe I'm just too young. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Nelson Mandela RIP on 22:39 - Dec 5 with 2640 views | 01792 | You don't need to be a black South African to understand and appreciate what Mandela stood for. You don't see what's so great about him? Perhaps that's because he campaigned his entire life for the basic human rights, liberties and equalities that we all take for granted. It doesn't need to be complicated for it to be worthy. South Africa may not be a utopia but nowhere is. Yet it's certainly a better place than it was before. Mandela could have quite easily sought violent revenge against whites after leaving prison and the situation would be far worse if he had done. Learning to set your differences and grudges aside in order to achieve success is something everyone can aspire to. A truly great man. RIP.

Yeah he focused all his violent revenge on the whites before he went into prison. I guess 27 years for a crime would make you think about a lot of things. Was spoken about in a completely different light n the 80's by numerous foreign governments and the media, he was in fact only officially taken off the US terrorist list in 2008. Not sure when exactly the tide turned and why, maybe people just liked the song.

Not in the mood for a debate but my point is that you are in no position to decide what is blown out of proportion and what is bandwagon jumping. If you don't care, you don't care, fair enough, but I remember seeing news of blacks with burning tyres around their necks or being shot with plastic bulllets. It was daily news. Whatever the state of the place now I don't think there can be any doubt that his intentions were good and his actions were quite heroic. But each to their own.

RIP!......But?.......I always thought he was shamelessly exploited by the cult of 'celebrity' as a PR-tool and self publicity initiative. David Beckham, The Spice Girls etc. It was the ultimate statement of 'cool' and ultimate self publicity stunt to be seen/photographed alongside him. I myself (do others?) question the sincerity of eternal PR-drone's e.g. Beckham and Co with his/their gushing Mandela praise and admiration. You could swear the likes of Beckham and Co were genuinely emotionally moved/affected, personally involved and truly knowledgeable of the apartheid movement and struggle? At what stage is Bono going to appear on the scene? A.S.A.P would be mine and his press agents guess?

I don't believe I "decided", I expressed an opinion. I definitely DO care about Mandela and what he did. I support a lot of it and it was incredibly important. Please don't think me anti-Mandela or anything. I think my opinion is quite well summed up in a tweet I saw earlier: "I'm sure Nelson Mandela did everything he did for racial equality just so that white girls could Instagram his face with a quote on it."

They've binned it mate, I'm furious. Just the start as well, got about 2 weeks of this I reckon. Earlier on the news it was all about the storm in North Wales, they couldn't give a s**t about the poor buggers now.

Holy shite! I seriously thought you were kidding. Just sort of backs up my opinion about flash bulb/TV camera loving celebrity parasites that would swarm around Mandela like mosquitos. I'd guess a celeb ' Mandela exploiter(s)' list would stretch to the whole length of the Liberty pitch if one was compiled.
