I'm astonished at this, regardless of my personal feelings about Mandela this is a dangerous orthodoxy.

Not everyone shares the same view about the man.

I can think of far more worthy cause of a minutes applause down the Liberty.

White south Africans were taught from the cradle that black man was inferior ,barely human and untrustworthy. Its why they were shifted from their lands to bogus homelands to facilitate White SA and its Boer heritage of hate.

We re also not talking about Winnie who was corrupt.

I agree with the overkill but it was the same with Churchill in 65 and God help us Diana which made me puke.

Perch, a useful corrective for your obsessive hatred of South Africans would be an afternoon stroll through the Delville Wood cemetery and memorial on The Somme. Have a good look at the ages on the stones. Stop and think for a minute and let the enormity of it all sink in a bit.

Ive been to several war graves thanks.
Ive also noted the many South Africans and Rhodesians buried there.
However its a fact many others were fascists and even a cursory look at 56/60s SA evidences this. It also doesn't excuse the brutality they used against the indigenous people of the Cape and the years of sheer oppression.I find it incredible anyone cannot have hatred for that regime. I would have hatred of any regime such as that.
Its also true many Rhodesians/ Afrikkaner served under me in Pold and most were utter chunts and truly skewed. I really could let them near Liverpool 8 .

You ll find Verwoed and his predessors had planned for apartheid for many years .

How anyone can have any sympathy for that abomination of humanity, the South African apartheid period,is beyond most sane men.

It is a period of shame that has been confined to the dustbin of history.

One in twenty South Africans were white, they oppressed the indigenous population for years and were very lucky a peace loving man like Mandela took over.

Otherwise it could have turned into a total bloodbath as the main citizens of the country could have turned on their former tormentors.

South Africans of today are a different breed to twenty years ago,the country now has a better future and the world of entertainment and sport has once again allowed them to participate with the rest of mankind.

For years they were shunned and kept out in the cold because of the regime,so much better all round these days
....mainly thanks to one man.

A "great" post Bony.

It is also the case that many south Africans were loathe to declare war of Germany mainly because the NAZI model became the template for Apartheid.

People here forget that the Afrikkaner hated the English with a passion ,probably because of us invading their CAPE at the turn of the 20thC and putting them into concentration camps which of course was the template for the NAZI regime. Seems to be a theme here.
Their resentment of us was profound from their base in the Orange Free State and their want for a homeland for the Voortrekkers overrode any thought for the basic human rights of native Africans.
Finally, I well remember ,in Ellesmere Port, having a client who came here from Bloemfontain who after less than 60 seconds told me that my country was soft (just lost at Rugby to them) in that it was allowing baboons too much power and influence.

My neighbors out here are South African, we've talked a fair bit about South Africa in the past and this morning I asked them if they'd heard the news. Funny reaction, one said "the terrorist is dead" and they did agree that he was "the best out of a bad bunch, still bad, but the best of a very bad bunch".

The wife told me how he was responsible for bombing a bus stop that she used daily. It killed a pregnant woman. My neighbor was out of the country at the time and she said she has never forgiven him for that. Interesting really.

I think your neighbours might be a bit racist. No, scrap that. They are.

I watched the minutes applause in the Sunderland Spurs match. They showed the crowd and I thought to myself what a bunch of sheep aimlessly clapping as they are told to. Most had their mouths open gaping for air too.

I'm not sympathetic to Apartheid. Far from it. I don't know anyone on this site who is?

I just feel the whole Mandela love in is out of proportion. For some reason or another he has managed to become a cult hero with people 'worshiping' him without really understanding him.

He was not an inherently peace loving man as borne out by his pre imprisonment actions. What he was was politically pragmatic and realized that a non-violent approach may have better consequences and get international support. In this he succeeded.

I'm not sure he contributed to WORLD peace or influenced much outside of SA but the folklore suggests otherwise.

Anyway, A BIG NO to a minutes applause from me.

Apartheid was a horrific oppressive regime with absolutely no place in any society

Mandela and the ANC committed some horrific atrocities in attempting to free the majority from this horrific regime.

Don't think anyone could disagree with this. Mandela didn't. As he said himself, he was no angel and to present him as one does him no favours. Saying that, his cause was just and, like leaders such as Churchill, that gives a certain amount of latitude.

Yup.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Hardly pathetic. He was a giant of the 20th century and helped end one of the vilest regimes in the world. Not sure it's appropriate or relevant to the city of Swansea but I'll applaud the man for what he achieved.

Well this is the point isn't it? Yes, is a lot for the vile regime in SA but the rest of the world?

It riles me to see him as a PR magnet even though it wasn't his doing. Less scrupulous PE agents spotted opportunities for their clients and Bono saw it for himself!!

That's not his fault in most cases though.

We can disagree on whether it's appropriate or relevant for this to happen on Monday (actually we probably agree) but I hope it's respected ... firstly because the man deserves that, and secondly the club will look very bad if it isn't.
