Should we go to war 14:48 - Dec 22 with 1154 viewsBoundy

Heavens forbid it ever came to it but we now have more civil servants than squaddies ,
"The Civil Service, cut back drastically during David Cameron’s time as prime minister, is now four times the size of the British Armed Forces for the first time. Britain has a public payroll of 543,000 full-time mandarins and 137,000 regular troops",
Vlad must be rubbing his hands in anticipation.

If we don't go to war we will certainly end up in the same economic problems as France.

There are far too many pen pushers in this country.
Don’t start me on Government workers working from home.
Get them back in the office doing a full 40 hours.

Working from home isn't a problem, it's the "non jobs" that are the problem.

Managers.senior staff don't get canned, they get moved sideways as the"higher ups look after each other.

There are far too many pen pushers though, The number of them where I work is crazy, we have 4 team leeaders, a supervisor a manager and a senior manager for about 40 actuall workers. We also have 2 planners and an admin/secretary.

Even your hero Churchill was against war, so it is a very strange question to even ask …..shirley ?

The next war , if it happens, will render numbers of squaddies almost insignificant as a nuclear exchange will kill as many as you might want to put in uniform - its a zero outcome game..

The only hope we have is in a technological advantage where enemy systems can be blocked, and our drone technology can get the better of our enemies. So the logic of your arguement supports more people defending us from behind their desks than ever before.

It probably makes India and China very likely to prevail.

It will not be won by more plucky squaddies cos its not 1939 anymore, is it ?

Most Govt workers that I know who are working from home now seem to manage to walk the dog, do the shopping, take a walk etc most days. In work time.
They don’t mind admitting it.
They couldn’t do that before COVID.
It’s us taxpayers who are funding it.

Buying and manufacturing weapons, kit, and logistical support are quite important in conflict.
As are international relations.

Do you think Putin fears our UK military ?

When you say in work time, do you know if they are doing things during lunch break or maybe they are working flexi time?

My wife works from home, she walks the dogs during her lunch but she works on longer if she's late back. Her boss has said she's more productive at home than in the office. Though she does admit others in her office say they skive.

I think it works both ways, Admiral have a lot of people working from home and they do alright with it.

On the OP, I kinda agree with Kilky on this, if there is another proper war a lot of it will be fought by people on computers, people controlling drones/UAV's etc but as we see in Ukraine, there is still a need for boots on the ground. We'll still need infantry, pilots and sailors. The key thing will be getting that balance right and according to the military experts, right now our armed forces are too far below strength to be effective.

If it goes nuclear then nothing will matter

I manage people who work from home. I know exactly when they're online or not and I know exactly how productive they are.

We're busier than before COVID and no longer need an office, that saves £500k a year.

The last I heard from WG workers was that they can work whatever hours they like so long as they do the required amount per day. So if you want to go play squash at 4-00 in the afternoon or go for a walk (not a typo!) at noon then you can. Just work the 7:24 you’re paid to do. Most do more than the contracted hours.
The ones I worked with were some of the best and in many cases brightest individuals I know. No shirking but each had their own ways of getting the job done. They get a tough deal by the public who don’t see what goes on. Ineffectiveness of the WG is not due to staff but to government policy.

Why are you all vilifying workers?
Stop believing in the Musks, Zuckerbergs and Bezos of this world.
These twots would have you work for nothing in gutters if that could make a bigger pile for themselves.

Most people take pride in their jobs whether they work from home or not
You'll always have skivers, regardless.

I am told by them that they stay logged on and pop out for a while.
No wonder the country is in such a state.
I agree that lots put a proper shift in. But lots definitely don’t.

The Russians two and a half years in cannot even take the whole of the Donbas. There is a doubt that they ever will. Their army and equipment had been filleted by Ukrainian and western kit.

They badly need a n off ramp and the West must understand they are desperate to t end the war they started but could not finish.
