I find this thinking of “football” as only being when you have the ball at your feet baffling.

95% of a game of football, all but one footballer on the pitch do not have the ball at their feet.

Football is as much what you do without the ball as with it. Simply ignoring that part of the game is breathtakingly short sighted.

We struggled at the start of this season precisely because we had an unbalanced side with too many players who were technically good with the ball at their feet but useless without it.

We corrected that balance and went on a phenomenal run.

As I have said many times, it’s no good having ballers if you can’t win tackles…you never get them the ball and have to play out from the keeper and you’ll never be winning possession higher up the pitch when the oppo are most exposed.

Running, closing down space, tracking runners, tackling, competing for loose balls…it’s all critical “football” just like touch, passing, crossing, and shooting are. You need a balance. The former is what makes formations and tactics work. Obviously you’d like every player to do all of those things really well, but that is naive. Hardly anyone in world football does it all, and any close only play for the top top clubs.

Field, Smyth, Cook, and Dunne are very solid, reliable players at this level. It is ludicrous for a club of our budget to want to move them on UNLESS we get big offers for them or they run their contracts down.

“We've made bids for two players,” Wilder confirmed. “Two centre-halves. I'm not going to give names and we've enquired about another two as well. We desperately need to bring a centre-half in, we understand that, but there are options there and hopefully before the deadline, one will come in the building. And will come into a group that's going to get stronger and stronger by the week.”

Speculation is very different from a statement of (presumed) fact. That's what I was referring to. Can you tell the difference?

If we keep Dunne until the end of the season and then he leaves for free, that is a very bad idea. He should only be kept if he signs a minimum 2 year contract.

But if he wants to sit tight and make himself a free agent at the end of the season, there is nothing we can do about it. We can’t force him to sign for SU or anyone else now.

If I were Jimmy I would see out my contract now. Season is over in 4 months and I would imagine he would have the pick of at least a couple of clubs and get a higher salary as there is no signing on fee.

Its a short career.

Dont know why we bother. .... but we do!

These two post set it out quite clearly.

How much do you reckon to on now p/w? How much would SU pay him a week? How much of his transfer fee would he get after agent taken his bit? You can quite quickly see why his agent would want him to move.

Anyone reckon he on £30k a week at the moment?

Of course you are correct, but you are also missing the point. As QPR supporters we should be looking at what is best for the club holistically and long (or at least medium) term, rather than about individual players. Players come and players go, but our club is our club. If we are serious about the 'model' of buying cheap, developing and selling for a profit, then now is the optimum time to sell Dunne. We should accept 2M and not be holding out unrealistically for 3M.
We have missed the boat doing this so many times in the past, that we really should have learned our lesson by now. JCS should have been sold last summer. The way things have turned out, we have had to replace him anyway and yet we are still paying him a significant wage to sit in the treatment room. Selling him for 5m and bringing in Morrison for much less is exactly what we are supposed to be doing, but we still have a scatter-gun approach to it. Paal is in in exactly the same boat as Dunne, but not the subject of angst on here because he is not as popular as Dunne or playing as well currently. A year ago Dunne could have been sold without a murmur. To move the club forward to financial competitiveness with other clubs in this division, we have to move on our best players when they are at their most valuable. Otherwise you continue to get 1M for Dykes or Dickie et al, or worse still, nothing for the likes of BOS/Manning etc.
We can't just get it right for outstanding talents like Eze, we need to get it right ALL the time; 2M for Dunne, 4M for JCS (last summer) and so on. People celebrated Chair's new contract, I see it as another missed opportunity to sell a saleable asset. As supporters, we have to stop jumping up and down when a 'bigger' club gets linked with some of our better players, and instead view it as a stepping stone to financial competitiveness, with these so called bigger clubs. If Brentford, Fulham, Bournemouth and Crystal Palace can compete in the Premier league, so can we - but it takes time and short term pain along the way.

You are of course right and this is extremely sensible stuff....but at some point you do have to build and have a squad to go up. Don't you do that by selling the luxury fancy dans and keeping a core of players (like Dunne) who have the drive to get you up? Can't keep churning all the time.

I also find it very hard to cheer a balance sheet.

But, I know you are right deep down.

Salaries and footballers have been discussed for years. Obviously it is a short career, probably maximum of between 12 and 15 years on average. I was thinking about this while walking the dog this morning. Let's say an average championship player (like Jimmy) makes, over his 12 year career an average of 15k per week (a very conservative estimate) plus any bonuses, transfer fees, sponsorship deals. Plus any increased weekly salary during his last 2 or 3 twilight years playing in the U. S. or Saudi etc.
So 9.4 million for the 12 years at 15k pw. You can probably add another 2 to 3 million if the player spends some years playing abroad. So around 12million for a 15 year career of just an average player. Of course it is possible for thier career to come to an end through injury, but I imagine these things are covered by the club and the player with insurance.
Then take your normal poor working slob who does probably 40 to 45 years before retirement. Maybe an average salary of 70k per an. 45 year working life will make him 3.2 million.
So, yep, short career in years but not financially.
I know there are other factors like how sensible will an 18 year old be doing what he loves and earning more than half a million a year, but hey we're all responsible for ourselves.
OK dog walk finished.

Dunne off? on 09:12 - Feb 3 with 1309 viewsTK1

The length of contract is probably key, rather than the weekly per se.

Jimmy is 28 this year. From all the deals QPR are currently doing, I don't imagine Nourry is particularly keen signing players much beyond 30, which suggests that he's probably been offered a 2 1/2 year deal at QPR and is holding out for another year at least. I'm sure it's all a dance about how long he gets somewhere, because this is his last decent contract.

Or he gets a couple of years on twice as much at a club with parachutes, like Sheff U, then takes his chances at 30.

We'll see soon enough.

You can only sell players IF anyone wants to pay decent money for them.

Who would’ve paid £5m for JCS last summer based on his terrible injury record despite his better season? Let’s say we get an offer of £2m last summer for him which takes into account his injury prone reputation: should the club take it or gamble his injuries are behind him and we’ll get another good season so tie him down to a new contract and hope to get £5-6m the following summer?

Who is going to pay anything decent for Chair at the moment? Due to his two injuries and stop/start campaign he’s been in very poor form and not going to attract any interest so the club tie him down to a new contract and hope he gets a decent run of games and gets back to his best so his value returns to the levels it could have been previously.

Not necessarily. I bet these clubs wanting to get over the line are offering silly contracts plus promotion bonuses would be massive. Then you either get Prem wages or half your contract paid off and start again.

One thing that has amused me throughout this short saga and mega thread….. when did it become the accepted fact that Cheff Utd have bid £2mill?

I’m Jimmys biggest fan but if roles were reversed I’m not sure I’d think that level of spend was a decent investment for my club when the player is a free agent in 4 months time.
Surely a low ball bid with a much bigger signing on fee for the player / agent is the tactic???

So if you give me the choice of £200k for Jimmy going now and a possible slide back down the table or keep him to end of season and more than likely mid table safety then I know what I’m choosing.
£200k or anything below £500k doesn’t fly for me

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

If Sheffield really wants him that badly, I don't understand why they are being difficult about an extra million considering the bags of cash they have in parachute payments and loads more surely to come if they make it back to the promised land.

Listening to Wilder's evaluation of the situation, its pretty desperate and they are down to the bare bones, should get Dunne in at all costs.
