Germany v Portugal on 21:45 - Jun 19 with 1392 views | Toast_R | I think the revised 24 team Euros has made it a bit sh*t to be honest. 16 teams there would be at least one heavyweight tie in every group. This playing for third nonsense really dilutes the match quality IMO. Best thing FIFA did was do away with that in favour of 32 teams only top 2 from each group qualify in World cups. Agreed. There’s absolutely no good reason to extend it further.

yeah feels like the real competition starts next weekend with knockout football from then on, the fact that all 3 of Portugal. Germany and France were always likely to get through has diluted what should have been a great group. Euros was always the best tournament when it had just 16 teams in, hard to qualify for and good intense games from the start

I might have this completely wrong but if Portugal lose to France in their final group game then presumably they’ll struggle to qualify in 3rd place with only 3pts?

Agreed. From here on in a group's final two games are played simultaneously and the joy of that used to be that all four countries knew at full time if they had made it or got knocked out. Now, under this format, one of today's teams will finish third and could conceivably be left kicking their heels until Wednesday to see if they're out or still in.

I'm fairly sure you're correct as I can't see any country qualifying from third place with only three points. I fancy that France would love to knock Portugal out. It won't happen, but a Hungary & France victories would see two Germany & Portugal eliminated! They are at an advantage as they will know what is required for third place progression by the time they play though.

yeah they might do but think 3rd places at the moment only really Switzerland and either Scotland or Croatia likely to get 4 points. It might be enough for them.
Germany v Portugal on 13:54 - Jun 20 with 922 views | Toast_R | Also nonsense that only 8 teams from 24 are eliminated in the first round which are essentially the teams that wouldn't have been good enough for a 16 team Euro's. A good example of why more is somtimes less.
