7 mins into his debut.

Never knowingly right.

There needs to be the full picture here.

We sign Charlie for £4m. After another club decided that medically he constituted some element of risk that meant they (Hull) were not comfortable paying several MILLION pounds against.
We took a risk - albeit on a player that had a consistently outstanding goal scoring record at every level he's played. We signed Charlie by offering a three year contract on, no doubt, more wages than he had ever earned before. A fee and no doubt some reasonable wages. A risk.

Charlie does very very well for us.
We were, for once, rewarded for taking a risk.

At some point over the intervening two years (no doubt when we were in the Premier League) we must surely have offered a new contract. I'm assuming Charlie's agent advised to "concentrate on your football, focus on keeping scoring the goals, and we'll see where both we and QPR are at the end of the season". In other words, thanks for the offer, we want to consider contracts after the season ends. Standard conduct.

QPR are relegated. Charlie has, meanwhile, shone.
QPR try to sign Charlie to a longer contract. "Come on Charlie, we want you, your happy, your family are happy, why not sign this new contract".

He never did. The club under performed, as ever.
What else could the club do?
Nothing except at least cash in as much as possible, and maintain a very good relationship with a modern day club legend.
To coat the club is naive and petty and pathetic.

if you feel the club have done well in terms of the fiscal monies that they have received , given the circumstances then good for you.

I dont see anyone coating off chas or the club, just questioning their business acumen which i believe is perfectly legitimate. As i say, if people are happy with it, then their happy with it .

in fact ive changed my mind, Id like to congratulate the club on an excellent deal ...well done to the board for pulling off the best bit of business since kenny noyes mob at Brinks mat.

I mis heard what they said on SSN was it Austin scores a winner near injury time or that an injured Austin scores winner ?

R's loss may be England's gain.If Chaz pops up with the winner against Germany or whoever - maybe Wales - I will rejoice as if he were a blood relative.

Juts remind me for a second what forwards did United go for this summer? And how much did they pay for them?

Totally agree. Charlie really would have been perfect for Utd. Too arrogant these days I'm afraid.

I'd been telling the my plastic Manc friends and inlaws and all day he'd score the winner against them. I just don't know in hindsight why I didn't put any money on him to.

Don't care about how Saints do, them being mid table would be good living in Hampshire they are starting to get very big headed the last few years! but hope Charlie ends up top scorer and getting to the Euros! Only 5 behind Vardy

I'm pleased for Charlie - confused my daughter mightily by cheering at the radio in the car when he scored........... but, I tell you what, how about Washington and Polter together? I reckon we might have quite a few goals in us now -might not miss Austin too much when it comes down to it.

‘morbid curiosity about where this is all going’

Charlie's goal today - where were United, but then again, who cares!

Really can't get excited about Chaz scoring for another team.
I wanted him to go tbf, but that was just because thinking about us losing him for nowt was too horrific.
But now?.......Couldn't care less,

Good luck to him but bottom line is he was offered a new contract on promotion turned it down. Palace offered in the summer, he turned it down, he wanted top 6 or Southampton. Top 6 don't come in Southampton offer but now the outlay that would have happened goes directly to him and agent, at his age this was his big move and he and his agent engineered it to get him the move he wanted for the largest amount of money possible. He / They had the belief in themselves and because of his success played the club. Not sure what else the club could have done on this one. But good luck to him he has given pleasure to many

Or just bitter bastards like me?

I hope Charlie scores 20 and gets in the England squad
Good luck to him

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

It was only Man U!

Kidding, well done Charlie Austin. Let's not blame the club for him leaving like he did, let's remember player power here.

He's a club legend, but he moved on on his terms only, not the club's interests at all.

I Felt more bitter about Sinclair scoring on his debut for west ham & Ferdinand when he skinned maddix to score against us in 96 than Austin today BAZ
we fcuked up, we should have offered him a deal straight after the play offs ,
still if Charlie scored in the Euros for England then id cheer more than anyone
good luck to him the only one shining light of 4 years of incompetence of having TF

Im happy for him but i cant help feeling a bit gutted at the same time. It just highlights how poor we've been the last few years.
Southampton?!!
We should be where they are now not selling our best player we've had for nearly two decades to them, half price. Yes i know,we didn't have much choice ,given his contract situation etc etc.
I guess that's the price we pay for getting relegated. Maybe if we wanted more money for him we should have sold when we first got promoted or extended his contract but these are the wheelings and dealings that the board are just not switched on to .

Wasn't there a promotion in there somewhere? You might have a bit of a jaundiced eye for the bloke.

Exactly Dave, history, toast, fckall to dowith QPR. Had to laugh at Linnekar saying he'd never heard a player say 'i'm delighted for me' before. Good luck to him, we need to build for the future.

Austin created the free kick too with some physical play in the corner. So he set up the free kick, and then headed it in. ManU fans were upset.

As did Polter. A strange symmetry today.

Yeah let's not start sucking Chaz clean off for scoring for his new club. The only Southampton goal I'm prepared to celebrate is when they kick John Terry's fking head into his own net.

Austin's dead to me. I don't care if he does great or shit. He's not an R now.

Stefan Moore, Stefan Moore running down the wing. Stefan Moore, Stefan Moore running down the wing. He runs like a cheetah, his crosses couldn't be sweeter. Stefan Moore. Stefan Moore. Stefan Moore.

Still can't believe we only got 4 million for him

I can't help wondering whether Harry had some deal that meant he got a percentage of any profit on a player he signed. Didn't Gerry have this? Selling Charlie for 4 mill. meant Harry didn't get a bonus. That in itself is good enough for me.
