Least Favourite Americanisms 08:55 - Nov 12 with 30503 views | BrianMcCarthy | Noticed more than ever on last weekend's trip to Blighty that you lot have joined us in Americanaland in that you now do your shopping in a 'store' rather than a 'shop'. Now I was always thought that the store was the dingy room at the back of the shop where they actually, y'know, stored stuff. Or, more precisely, the room where the lad went for a smoke while pretending to check whether they had any spare bogroll. This pretence at looking is annoying, by the way, but it is infinitely better than you asking if they have any spare stock and him, without listening, giving you the lazy-assed automaton reply 'everything we have is on the shelves', which makes you ask him why the fugg they built the huge fugging room out back so with the price of real estate. What reminded me of all this is that I'm in a doctor's waiting room (knee injury - nothing serious) and as every person comes to the desk and does the 'morning, how are you?' routine their standard answer is 'I'm good'. What? Are you? Are you 'good'? Are you well-behaved? Morally sound? A beacon of goodness in this bad, bad world? Well, nice to know, I'm sure. But are you well? That, after all, is more pertinent info and would be an appropriate answer to the question while we're at it. Good! Californian Disney Ar$e-scutter! Away with you!

Least Favourite Americanisms on 10:45 - Nov 12 by Doughnut | Bathroom, Math & truck.....read Toilet, Maths & Lorry. The f**ing word is mathematics....plural. Kids asking their teachers if they can 'use' the bathroom..........it's the thin end of the wedge you know!!!!! |
As bad as taking the s off "maths" is putting it on the end of "sport". Another reason to dislike Sky. Using "revert" instead of reply puts my teeth on edge. (Had to stop myself writing grinds my gears there, careful now.) Why do it?

Actually, I have noticed that my many American colleagues are now adding superfluous prepositions to all sorts of verbs. Noooooooo! RFA

Oftentimes, Brian is excited to touch base with other Rs fans, when's he's not out of pocket. It's due to his professionalness. Or something. And now for a jolly afternoon at work, dealing with our friends from across the pond. It may not have been such a good idea to read this thread first. RFA

"Bathroom" is an English one I think! The American term is "Restroom" which is equally ridiculous. Wouldn't be my choice of location to have a short rest.
Least Favourite Americanisms on 15:03 - Nov 12 with 2090 views | PlanetHonneywood | 1. 24/7 - which begs the question, is their commitment to something just a weekly thing and if so what happens in the other 51 weeks or, if not, then surely all year long would be better? 2. Like - as in 'So like, its like not quite red, but like, more purple' 3. Awesome - jeez my blood boils when its used as liberally as it is! 4. Herbs - Its pronounced with a f.....g aitch. It's not as if they call the home of their film industry 'ollywood! 5. Go - As in, Go Braves, Go Rangers. Go bloody where? 6. Chanting/singing at sports events - 'Let's go Rangers, Let's go (see five above) 7. USA, USA, USA or four more years, four more years - totally banal! 8. I love your accent, are you from...insert any and every English speaking country bar, England, mostly Orstraylia! 9. When they do a Dick Van Dyke British accent - because of course, Geordies, socusers, cockneys all sound similar. (see further Daphne Moon's family on Frasier). 10. Math - implies the subject has one singular branch to it. 11. Go figure - unless some math(s) is required, then what am I required to calculate? I'm assuming 'figure' is not some sports team urged to go to some undesignated place (see 5 above)! 12. Their need to play the National Anthem at every given opportunity. 13. Have a nice day! - If I had $10 for every time I have been told this by someone who patently doesn't give a crap whether I retire to bed having won the lottery or been massacred, I'd be a rich man indeed. 14. The NRA - Nuff said about this lot! 15. Good jaaarb! - Cringe as I was neither employed to perform the task and its job, not jaaarb! [Post edited 12 Nov 2015 15:23]
