They shut it down because they couldn’t recruit doctors to run the service during the evening and into the night. I dare say there’d be doctors willing to do it for agency pay rates £700 to £1000 per shift, but not for contracted rates. I know a few nurses and it seems the WG and Health Boards are trying to reduce expenditure on agency staff, in terms of nursing it’s starting to work in lots of places because faced with little or not shifts nurses are returning to the NHS.

You are right about constraints in trading numbers for doctors because there’s always a huge surplus of applicants for the number of places available, nurses not so much as for many years courses were under prescribed.
Things have changed significantly in the NHS since its inception, everything has become more complicated and specialist and medics can do a lot more than they could previously. Running an A&E is hugely expensive and staffing them can be difficult. Pressure on resources, bad planning, poor managers and a huge increase in demand fuelled by an increasing population and aging population created a vicious circle which will take some sorting out. A major factor in the queues at A&E is the bed blocking further up the line because the emergency departments can’t move people on from A&E to create more space. |
For nurses too, at least in terms of our local training capacity. The numbers of places available at Swansea University were cut in the late 1990s, and perhaps early 2000s (forgotten the exact years) to the point that teaching staff numbers were reduced, as I recall mainly through not filling posts. At Swansea student applications were always well above numbers admitted to courses in that period. Wales compared favorably with England because of bursaries. [Post edited 18 Dec 10:17]

Totally agree but this also leads onto another " injustice" that Morriston Hospital children's department doesn't have the correct or even some facilities to treat seriously ill children they have to go to the Heath in cardiff , Noah's Ark precisely , just why does this have to be, I accept that no one or thing can do everything but like the MTU denied to Morriston its appears the more cardiff wants the more it gets including the provision of health care for children , regardless of the imposition on families who have to travel and then try to maintain some sort of normality . | |

The top end of health care is really specialist, staff are in short supply and it’s also very expensive so services are coordinated and shared. Most of us are proud to come from the Swansea Bay Area, but for some it’s not a great place and it’s difficult to attract the staff with the skills down this far west as there are better opportunities further up the line.
Funnily enough one of my neighbours is a paediatrician, they’ve had offers of promotion in other areas, but as they have kids who are settled in school and like the area they’ve stayed, but that decision to put family first comes at a cost.
Specialist Paediatric cardiology services are even further up the line at Bristol which is 1 of a dozen or so UK centres.
I don’t like the fact that Cardiff is getting more than Swansea, but I can see why some services are centralised there because they’ve got other specialisms on site and there’s more chimneys. | | | |
