Currently into my 15th hour of waiting to see a doctor and the brains trust reckon when Prince Phillip A&E Morriston will be able to take up the slack , no drunks were hurt in the making of this post

Health is devolved and Labour are in charge of spending the allocated cash, but until July the amount was controlled by the Tories in Westminster for 14 years. Austerity there is austerity here.

Westminster have now given a bit more, hopefully they'll put some pressure on the Senedd to remove universal free prescriptions too

Why are you and some others so keen to see universal free prescriptions looked at. It’s one of the best initiatives to have come out of the WG in the years they’ve been bothering us.

The cost of delivering it is offset largely by the number of people who wouldn’t take the medicine prescribed if it cost because they can’t afford it. The result of that is a poorer health in Wales resulting in even more pressure on the NHS.

And if you say that it should be means tested, I can say with some confidence that the cost of administering that would cost probably as much as free prescriptions.

We get something good, something countries around the world would love to have, the envy of so many and people want it pulled. I despair sometimes!

These days the use of shared days between Government Departments should make some decision making and scheme administration easier. For example higher rate taxpayers could be exempt from free prescriptions by a simple matching process.

The saving wouldn’t scratch the service. Why not have free medicine FOR ALL? It’s a good thing, it is!

Because there is a cost to it and every penny counts, no matter how small that cost is. There is a tiny cost to means testing as it's literally just ticking a box on the back of the prescription, some people will take advantage but not many. It would only take a quick computer script to be run between government departments to see if it was being abused, a handful of spot fines and it would pay for itself.

I genuinely don't believe that many people wouldn't pick up medicine and end up in hospital - that doesn't seem to happen in England, their NHS seems to perform better regarding patient outcomes, and the most vulnerable still get free prescriptions.

I picked up my first NHS presecription in years last week, for Naproxen, I'd never heard of it but it tunrs out I could have bought it in Boots for less than £5. I wonder why the NHS paid for it? In Englandf I bet the Dr would have said, "if I prescripe this it'll cost £10 ask for some in the pharmacy instead"

It is something good, but we simply can't afford it.

People complain it’s take take take world we live in then we get something in return for all our taxes, something that is to EVERYONE’S benefit and people bleat we can’t afford it. I really think it is a marvellous thing and something we should ensure we can afford.

There are a plethora of initiatives that WG spend money in that could be cut or not implemented in the first place and they’ve been debated to death on this forum but free prescriptions for all shouldn’t be one of them.

My wife just heard about another sad case from her friend. The latter's husband is a man in his 70s who has been unwell for some time. Yesterday his condition worsened and the wife called an ambulance at 6.00pm. Wife and sister in law waited up all night until the ambulance finally arrived at about 10.00 am this morning. The husband's condition in Morriston is presently unclear. I'm afraid this kind of thing simply should not be happening in a developed European healthcare system.

I laugh when the ad providing guidance if someone's suspected of having a stroke and the acronym FAST is used . time to call 999 wtf for , to be told sorry the waiting time for an ambulance is next week .

Whole system needs looking at, we've had a few "long" waits at A@E , and some other issue with the system My wife had a letter for an appointment at a hospital last week , turned up, and she was told there was no appointment for her on their system , and they were full, she couldn't be seen , they said the letter was sent out in error!!!! the whole morning wasted, and that's not the only "office" error we've had.

That’s p@@@ poor. You should have kicked off and asked to speak to the Service Delivery Manager.

A few months ago I had issues with the lack of progress /appointment for a long standing issue my mother was experiencing and the attitude of a member of staff when I asked a few questions. I ended up speaking to the Patient Advice Liaison Service and it got sorted. Get hold of the below and ask them to investigate /make a complaint. There’s also an independent patient advocacy service call Llais.

My wife was the one, i dropped her off and was busy looking for a parking space, ....but soon called back to pick her up, I am aware of that link as i've used it a few years ago for another chaotic episode.

we've both been "forced" due to health reasons to use the NHS on a regular basis, for near on 40 years and TBH have had no complaints until 2020, since then its been absolute chaos and disaster and we've met many who have had similar treatment from them, and dealt with quite a few who look to have been trained in the Stanley Unwin school of excuses.

they did phone a few hours later full of apologies and get another appointment, but in all my years i've never seen things so bad, not even a reply from the first minister! But its not only the NHS , nothing works anywhere, no one cares and nothing is done to repair or improve things , we are heading as a country to a major uprising , itson ots way I am sure of that, the only thing that works and arrives on time is the bill for payment.

My recent and ongoing experiences are a lack of communication which is hampering treatment and ensuring a smooth transition between departments, on my recent experience at A&E where during my 28 hour wait could have been cut shorter by 6 hours if the overnight ( by the department own admission) on call radiologist had handed over my notes after an xray then I would have had further tests that day ,it was only a case of me disturbing the staff asking what was happening that this came to light .After waiting over 20 hours at this point it was normal to start chatting with others around you who were experiencing similar issues, misplaced notes.
I then had to have an MRI scan the following day (Sunday) which was booked for 09 00 hours and guess even though I was there prompt someone had forgotten to book the MRI scanner technician who had to called in from home.
I'm sure in my case these were oversights but maybe in the case of someone who was seriously ill ,potentially costly .

Is Morriston doing too much ?

No Neath Gen anymore, where do those patients go ? (Morriston I believe)

Port Talbot seems a small thing in comparison to the old Neath Gen and doesn't seem to provide nowhere near the same services.

Has Morriston taken on more and more work with satellite hospitals closing or downgrading ?

it looks a common issue, on recent trips only for blood tests, where an appointment is made , on arrival we have been told there was no record, or the appointment was for another place, even though the confirmation e mail shows different!!!
and just this minute my wife has told me she was with someone yesterday who had the same experience turning up for an appointment , but on arrival they weren't on the system!

Prince Phillip in Llanelli has closed its minor injuries unit from 20:00 hours to 08:00 hours which will, obviously to those with a brain, have a significant impact on Morriston A&E and increase already more than unacceptable waiting times.

I'm afraid its true , maybe the Government could speed up the immigration process to get all these experienced qualified Doctors newly arrived onto the wards and working instead of loafing around in hotels watching Tik Tok ., just a thought.
Currently there are 128 patients in Morriston A&E
16 patients in Prince Phillip MIU
29 patients in NPT MIU
In Wales we have 24 MIUs & 14 A&Es ,maybe there's some sort of disparity in those
figures ?

They shut it down because they couldn’t recruit doctors to run the service during the evening and into the night. I dare say there’d be doctors willing to do it for agency pay rates £700 to £1000 per shift, but not for contracted rates. I know a few nurses and it seems the WG and Health Boards are trying to reduce expenditure on agency staff, in terms of nursing it’s starting to work in lots of places because faced with little or not shifts nurses are returning to the NHS.

There’s an A&E in Glangwili.

Obviously far more serious and necessary cases ahead of my minor complaint I appreciate and understand fully .

Just to add my bit , still waiting to see a Dermatologist , letter dated July this year , this of course after the merry go round of trying to see my GP at Primary Care initially .

Send photos and have a diagnosis over the phone , unbelievable way to go forward .
My phone is an old Nokia brick so could not send any pics to the Clinic , receptionist took photos on her phone of my issue in full view of a queue of other waiting patients .

Not even a choice of privacy to go through this photo shoot of my best side sadly .

All done in front of the public , luckily i was not in major trauma though , Strike the Pose .

It would be interesting to chart the changing configuration of A&E services in our area over the years. For many years the main A&E Unit was at Singleton, but that closed as Morriston expanded. Later there was a Minor Injuries Unit at that same location, which also closed after a few years. Initially, the new arrangements seemed to offer more capacity, but one wonders whether, with population growth, there has been too much centralisation with consolidation into too few centres. Obviously, staffing is a problem, and one might argue that the period I am talking about was also a time of abysmal workforce planning. In my opinion there was the training capacity to increase both medical and nursing student numbers, which were deliberately constrained.

You are right about constraints in trading numbers for doctors because there’s always a huge surplus of applicants for the number of places available, nurses not so much as for many years courses were under prescribed.

Things have changed significantly in the NHS since its inception, everything has become more complicated and specialist and medics can do a lot more than they could previously. Running an A&E is hugely expensive and staffing them can be difficult. Pressure on resources, bad planning, poor managers and a huge increase in demand fuelled by an increasing population and aging population created a vicious circle which will take some sorting out. A major factor in the queues at A&E is the bed blocking further up the line because the emergency departments can’t move people on from A&E to create more space.
