Ethan Brierley Sheffield Bound? on 23:38 - Feb 2 by 49thseason | If you break a law , that law has been made law by politicians you could vote for, it is checked in the Lords and upheld by the police and you can go to court and appeal if you feel you have been mistreated. The EFL are the politicians, police, judge and jury in all English football matters for just 72 clubs and apparently there is no appeal court when problems arise. This matter directly impacts 2 of those clubs, one, Rochdale have been totally innocent but still affected, the other, Blackburn, had mitigating circumstances. The governing body makes its own rules and could, if minded, make an exception, no one would complain given the circumstances. This is another example of the EFL being heavy handed and tone deaf. The EFL discriminates against L1 and L2 clubs by effectively making it impossible to disagree with Championship clubs and win, the biased voting system gives championship clubs most of the TV revenues and the Premiership monies, and 48 other clubs get crumbs off the table. It is a discriminatory and grossly iniquitous organisation which needs major reform for the sake of football generally |
You know Blackburn are a Championship club, right?

Ethan Brierley Sheffield Bound? on 09:47 - Feb 3 by AtThePeake | You know Blackburn are a Championship club, right? |
Really, Blackburn Rovers in the Championship? Well I never. Who knew? When did this happen? I am merely pointing out that the EFL is not fit for purpose, Championship clubs are financially much better treated and the rich get richer, but the imposition of rules and regulations on clubs is arbitary to say the least, I imagined you probably came to that conclusion during the MH takeover farce or the Bury debacle? The organisation doesn't have an equitable structure as long as Championship clubs have as many votes as L1 and 2 combined and the EFL has effectively the casting vote on every issue. If its true the Blackburn got their paperwork in 7 seconds late, then the whole issue just gets worse. Was Blackburn's clock wrong or was the EFL's? And why would an organisation that is supposed to support its clubs so keen to refuse the paperwork for the sake of a few seconds? Even if the paperwork arrived 10 or 15 minutes past midnight, would the world have stopped? The deal was done before the deadline. Surely that's the important bit? The EFL gives yards of elastic to the likes of Southall but slams the door on Blackburn Rovers for the sake of a few seconds or minutes. Its a nonsense.

Ethan Brierley Sheffield Bound? on 19:24 - Feb 2 by Shun | It’s not the EFL’s fault. They set clear enough rules, it’s not difficult to follow them. Blackburn had a month to make an offer. |
A voice of reason. 7 seconds late? Oh, go on then. 15 mins late? Oh, go on then. 3 hours late?, Hmmmm oh, go on then. The 23:00 deadline becomes 01:00. 7 seconds late? Oh, go on then. 15 mins late? Oh, go on then. 3 hours late?, Hmmmm oh, go on then. (repeat).
Ethan Brierley Sheffield Bound? on 11:34 - Feb 3 with 2589 views | PeteZoo | Hello, Dale fans. Rovers fan in peace, here. First off, I feel for Brierley in this shambolic situation. To be waiting several days for an outcome because of unexpected circumstances is unfair on anybody. He sounds like he's going to have a good career in the game, regardless, but right now, the situation must really suck. I noticed a few posts having a go at the EFL for blocking the deal over "seven seconds". My take on it is that it doesn't matter if it's seven seconds, seven nanoseconds, seven minutes, seven hours, or whatever. The word deadline contains the clues - "dead" and "line". If you have a deadline, set your own personal deadline an hour earlier, a day earlier, or a week earlier. The late filing of the paperwork happened on two deals. You won't find many, if any, Rovers fans blaming the EFL, and rightly so. The issues at Rovers run a bit deeper than two mishaps on deadline day. In short, I can guarantee you that this is sheer incompetence by so-called professionals who are paid hundreds of thousands per year to do their jobs. The EFL can be blamed for many things, but not this. Anyway, all the best, and hopefully Brierley and Dale will be able to move on from this quickly.

Cheers for that. Strangely, we have seen empathetic musings from the EFL when one of our highly-paid executives "forgot" to file paperwork in a timely manner.

If so, this is amazing news as he can play the rest of the season whilst funds are guaranteed. Only negative being if he has an absolute storming end to the season and his value goes up. But hey, if that means we stay up so be it.

It's going to be interesting to see how this pans out. He had his interview welcoming him to BRFC, passed his medical then bang - everything explodes in his face. So now he's back to being available for selection, but we have Dan available too - older, more experienced and maybe more physically able to handle himself in L2 as well. Can Ethan get his head around coming back to doing a job for us as a kind of loan player for a relegation run-in and adjust accordingly, or will his head be elsewhere? I hope he can contribute to the latest Great Escape attempt and cement his already excellent reputation at the club [Post edited 3 Feb 2023 13:05]

Broughton said something along the lines of "a club like Rochdale needs every penny it can get", and "we owe it to a valued member of the Football League to give you the money". Don't shoot the messenger! It's worth pointing out that he is a DoF at a football club with £200m+ of debt. Right now, I'm embarrassed to be a Rovers fan. Sorry you're having to deal with us!

No apologies required from fans, and if Blackburn are prepared to honour the deal, as others have said it might work in our favour And at least you're not Sheffield Utd...

Sheffield United's interest might resurface between now and summer. I don't think there's an official agreement between Rovers and Dale for Brierley. I suspect it's just a gentleman's agreement. Sheffield United hijacked one of our deals last summer. On the plus side, if Sheffield United do come in for him again, maybe it'll start a bidding war.

What you need to remember is Brierley is a Rochdale fan. He is exactly the same as us. The lad isn’t one of the useless mercenaries we’ve been putting up with, he loves the club. In a weird way this couldn’t have worked out any better. We get the money but get to keep the player. He can be involved in the run in and do his bit to keep us up by playing out of his skin and immortalising his name within Rochdale fans folklore. This shambles could really give us a glimmer of hope!

But is it clear we have got the money? What sort of contract can be signed to guarantee that? Not saying it hasn’t happened, but clarity is needed.

I've seen Nixon's bit, I didn't pay for it because charging people for transfer talk is some next level tvvattery but I can't believe what I've read. I mean, there's two ways you can read what he's put: A) The Ethan Brierley transfer fee was £80,000 (EIGHTY THOUSAND POUNDS) Or B) We were gonna pay £80,000 for Regan Linney. One of the biggest prospects outside the EFL, someone who BBM said "Had no ceiling" in terms of ability, who had a trial at Manchester City, going for £80,000 is an utterly petrifying thought. I know we always get less than what we want for players but to put that into perspective, that's what we paid for Andy Flounders over three decades ago. It's probably around what we paid for the likes of Jordan Williams and Jon Shaw. It's less than what we paid for Tahvon Campbell and Clive Platt and the latter was over 20 years ago! Or We were going to pay £80,000 for a player who Altrincham have just paid £10k for, who was playing in the Northern Premier League, three divisions below us and got into hot water with drug dealing? Which is worse? Good luck to the board next week at the forum.

At first I hoped that it was badly worded & the £80K was what we were paying for the rumoured transfer in of Linney. Then I read that Linney has gone to Alty for £10K. So either we were paying 8x Alty for Linney, we are selling Brierley for probably about the same as we got for George Donnelly, or (hopefully) £80K was the first of twelve and a half installments.
Ethan Brierley Sheffield Bound? on 14:11 - Feb 3 with 1556 views | HullDale | Actually - if we were getting £80K a month installments, that fixes the immediate cashflow challenge of losing £20K a week. Maybe its been structured that way on purpose.
