| News Comment | Southampton V Grimsby Town The Verdict at 11:15:04
No it wasn't "what cost them" although both penalties were poor. What cost them was the same failure to create and carve out real goalscoring chances from midfield posession. It was easily within their grasp to score three goals against Grimsby and they managed just one, simply because they are incapable of creating space and time in the box to put the ball away. Doncaster managed it, so did Harrogate Swindon and Salford, and Southampton scored just one - I won't even bother with the list of all those teams than managed to score two. Ally McCoist unwittingly made exactly the same comment Graham Souness made three years ago "Southampton's problem is they are easy to defend against". It is worth a bet that Saints will score less goals from open play now than there are games left in the season. Pray for free kicks. |
| News Comment | Can Jack Stephens Be The Come Back Kid Again for Southampton at 12:07:45
Why does every article about Stephens have to include some comment about how he is never going to be a regular player in the side? Is it some kind of contractual obligation never to just consider him as a Saints Player and wish him well rather than issue a reminder that you don't think he's really that good? I've never seen this negative attitude about any other squad member. He was playing well before, he deserved to be in the side on merit, he got injured. If he comes back playing as well as he did previously he'd be back in the team on merit again. Is that a bad thing? |
| News Comment | 2019/20 Season Review - The Central Midfield at 13:10:49
I was really impressed with Oriel Romeu after lockdown. In many of those games he was the anchor breaking down opposition attacks and launching counter attacks. Hardly ever did anything showy but his tackles won count must be higher than Hojbjerg. |
| News Comment | The Players Need To Step Up To The Plate ! at 12:31:10
Last season I remember Graeme Souness talking about Southampton on Sky. Can't remember who they were playing but I think it was a top 6 team and Saints were playing well but a goal down. The other pundits were praising SFC and Souness said "Yes they always look good, but they are easy to play against". Stoke came to St Marys knowing exactly what they were going to face and they had a plan to ensure they left with something. Under MP they remind me of the teams under Ian Branfoot. All afraid to make the killer pass for fear of losing posession. Afraid to make a run in case they lose the bloke they would have to mark at a corner. |
